Robust and High Throughput Tools for Characterization of Wet Cellulosic Biogas Feedstocks and Co-Products: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-21-21472

This project will develop standardized analytical procedures to support understanding of the chemical composition of wet manure feedstocks, and the digestate formed following anaerobic digestion of organic waste to produce renewable natural gas (RNG). The developed methods will be validated to improve component mass closure, eliminate ambiguities around key constituents, and document the precision and accuracy of the methods. Following validation of the analytical laboratory methods for characterization of wet organic waste feedstocks and digestate, NLR will use the same samples to build and validate near-infrared (NIR) models for high throughput analysis, potentially deployable at commercial facilities, enabling increased production of low carbon intensity RNG from wet organic wastes.

Metrology and Standards Gaps and FY27 Work Focusing on Impact

This work focuses on the Heliostat Consortium (HelioCon) optical measurements and characterization, testing and modeling capabilities and infrastructure at NLR and Sandia supporting heliostat technology research, development, validation, and deployment in relevant industries. The development of standards in HelioCon requires a collective effort across the global heliostat community of industry, researchers, academia and other stakeholders.

Weibel-mediated filamentary structures observed in the ICF context

Here, in light of novel and past experimental results, we demonstrate how Weibel-mediated filamentary structures can develop in the expanding plasma plume of a laser-irradiated foil. The transverse ballistic cooling that occurs during the quasi-spherical plasma expansion naturally drives an electron pressure anisotropy, resulting in the growth of electron current filaments. This effect competes with electron–ion Coulomb collisions, which tend to isotropize the electron distribution function. Based on theoretical and particle-in-cell modeling, we provide estimates of the dominant wavelength and amplitude of the self-generated magnetic fluctuations, which are found to explain experimental data obtained at the OMEGA and Laser Megajoule facilities.

Earth Observations and Integrative Models in Support of Food and Water Security

Global food production depends upon many factors that Earth observing satellites routinely measure about water, energy, weather, and ecosystems. Increasingly sophisticated, publicly-available satellite data products can improve efficiencies in resource management and provide earlier indication of environmental disruption. Satellite remote sensing provides a consistent, long-term record that can be used effectively to detect large-scale features over time, such as a developing drought. Accuracy and capabilities have increased along with the range of Earth observations and derived products that can support food security decisions with actionable information. This paper highlights major capabilities facilitated by satellite observations and physical models that have been developed and validated using remotely-sensed observations. Although we primarily focus on variables relevant to agriculture, we also include a brief description of the growing use of Earth observations in support of aquaculture and fisheries.

Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop

The Sixth Annual Thermal and Fluids Analysis Workshop was held at the Ohio Aerospace Institute, Brook Park, Ohio cosponsored by NASA Lewis Research Center and the Ohio Aerospace Institute, August 15-19, 1994. The workshop consisted of classes, vendor demonstrations, and paper sessions. The classes and vendor demonstrations provided participants with the information on widely used tools for thermal and fluids analysis. The paper sessions provided a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among thermal and fluids analysis. Paper topics included advances a uses of established thermal and fluids computer codes (such as SINDA and TRASYS) as well as unique modeling techniques and applications.
