Microstructure-Based Estimation of Strength and Ductility Distributions for \(\alpha +\beta \) Titanium Alloys

Titanium alloys are processed to develop a wide range of microstructure configurations and therefore material properties. While these properties are typically measured experimentally, a framework for property prediction could greatly enhance alloy design and manufacturing. In this work, a microstructure-sensitive framework is presented for the prediction of strength and ductility as well as estimates of the bounds in variability for these properties. The framework explicitly considers distributions of microstructure via new approaches for instantiation of structure in synthetic samples. The parametric evaluation strategy, including the finite element simulation package FEpX, is used to create and test virtual polycrystalline samples to evaluate the variability bounds of mechanical properties in Ti-6Al-4V. Critical parameters for the property evaluation framework are provided by measurements of single crystal properties and advanced characterization of microstructure and slip system strengths in 2D and 3D. Property distributions for yield strength and ductility are presented, along with the validation and verification steps undertaken. Comparisons between strain localization and slip activity in virtual samples and in experimental grain-scale strain measurements are also discussed.

ECCI analysis of shear accommodations at grain boundaries in commercially pure alpha titanium

This study uses a novel approach that couples electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) with controlled removal of surface material to investigate the slip system/grain boundary interactions by assessing the geometry of slip planes and grain boundaries as a function of depth. The comparison of spacing, relative distributions, and correlations of slip bands across grain boundaries reveals surface biasing on the slip band behavior in the grain boundary region. Furthermore, using analysis of the compatibility factor m’, the Schmid factor of each slip system, and the angles θ between slip planes, a more comprehensive understanding of the details of the mechanisms of strain transfer and heterogeneous deformation is developed. In general, the misalignment of primary slip systems on the grain boundary planes necessitates the activation of secondary accommodating slip systems close to the grain boundary area that are better aligned (higher m’ and lower θ) with respect to the incoming slip system across the grain boundary. Such systems have the same Burgers vector as the primary slip systems within the respective grains, but are typically on low mobility slip planes.

Structures of two novel crystal forms of Aspergillus oryzae alpha amylase (taka-amylase)

The structures of Aspergillus oryzae α-amylase were determined in a tetragonal crystal, having one molecule as asymmetric unit, and a monoclinic crystal with two molecules as asymmetric unit. Both crystal forms were obtained from trace contaminants of an old commercial lipase preparation. Structures were determined and refined to 1.65 Å and 1.43 Å resolution respectively. The latter crystal has a non-crystallographic (NCS) twofold axis within the asymmetric unit. Glycosylation at Asn197 is evident, and in the tetragonal crystal can be seen to include three, partially disordered sugar residues following the initial N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG). Superposition of the tetragonal crystal model on the α-amylases from Bacillus subtilis (PDB:1BAG), pig pancreas (PDB:3L2L), and barley (PDB:1AMY), show a high degree of coincidence, particularly for the (β/α)8-barrel domains, and especially within the active site. Using this structural agreement between amylases, we extrapolated the binding model of a six residue, limit dextrin found in pig pancreas α-amylase to the A. oryzae enzyme model, which predicts substrate interacting amino acid residues.

Bulk and surface diffusion of neodymium in alpha-uranium: Ab initio calculations and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations

A fundamental understanding of lanthanide transport in metallic fuels is critical for high fidelity modeling of the fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) phenomenon, which can lead to the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds and premature failure of the cladding. Here we report a combined ab initio density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) study of the bulk diffusivity of Nd in α-U, fully taking into account the effect of radiation enhanced diffusion. In this work, the vacancy mechanism is considered to be the dominant mechanism for the bulk diffusion of Nd since a Nd interstitial is found to be intrinsically unstable in α-U. The surface diffusivity of a Nd adatom on α-U (001) surface has been further predicted using KMC simulations parameterized by DFT calculations. The present study suggests that Nd transport via the surface diffusion mechanism can be many orders of magnitude faster than bulk diffusion. Furthermore, the results from the present lower length scale study can be used to inform mesoscale phase-field simulations to determine the effective diffusion coefficient of Nd through α-U with a porous microstructure.
