Experimental investigation of an accelerometer controlled automatic braking system

An investigation was made to determine the feasibility of an automatic braking system for arresting the motion of an airplane by sensing and controlling braked wheel decelerations. The system was tested on a rotating drum dynamometer by using an automotive tire, wheel, and disk-brake assembly under conditions which included two tire loadings, wet and dry surfaces, and a range of ground speeds up to 70 knots. The controlling parameters were the rates at which brake pressure was applied and released and the Command Deceleration Level which governed the wheel deceleration by controlling the brake operation. Limited tests were also made with the automatic braking system installed on a ground vehicle in an effort to provide a more realistic proof of its feasibility. The results of this investigation indicate that a braking system which utilizes wheel decelerations as the control variable to restrict tire slip is feasible and capable of adapting to rapidly changing surface conditions.

New motor shaft angular accelerometer concept

Concept permits measurement of the acceleration of continuously rotating shafts without use of slip rings or telemetry and with little additional inertial load. Concept has application in servomotor control circuits and easy-to-fly airplane controls.

Test and development of inflatable spheres instrumented with miniaturized thermistors, accelerometers and pressure transducers

Instrumentation was developed for the high altitude inflatable sphere to measure its skin temperature, acceleration and internal pressure. The sphere without instrumentation has routinely been used over the past 10 years to provide measurements of winds, density, temperature and pressure between 100 Km and 30 Km altitude. With the miniaturized instrumentation package onboard, the system offers the potential for providing meteorological information as well as a better understanding of sphere performance and dynamics during its descent. Of the six launches of instrumented spheres only one provided telemetry data. However, many of the objectives of the program were achieved.

Acquisition and analysis of accelerometer data

Acceleration data reduction must be undertaken with a complete understanding of the physical process, the means by which the data are acquired, and finally, the calculations necessary to put the data into a meaningful format. Discussed here are the acceleration sensor requirements dictated by the measurements desired. Sensor noise, dynamic range, and linearity will be determined from the physical parameters of the experiment. The digitizer requirements are discussed. Here the system from sensor to digital storage medium will be integrated, and rules of thumb for experiment duration, filter response, and number of bits are explained. Data reduction techniques after storage are also discussed. Time domain operations including decimating, digital filtering, and averaging are covered, as well as frequency domain methods, including windowing and the difference between power and amplitude spectra, and simple noise determination via coherence analysis. Finally, an example experiment using the Teledyne Geotech Model 44000 Seismometer to measure from 1 Hz to 10(exp -6) Hz is discussed. The sensor, data acquisition system, and example spectra are presented.

Micromachined Tunneling Accelerometer

Separation of tunneling electrodes adjusted by varying electrostatic force. Major components of tunneling transducer formed on two silicon chips by microfabrication techniques. Use of electrostatic deflection reduces sensitivity of transducer to thermal drift and simplifies design. Sensitivity suitable for applications in which larger acceleration-sensing instruments required.

Description of the Klemperer wing strain meter (accelerometer)

The wing strain meter enables a pilot to know the strain on lifting surfaces and to warn him of the safe limits which may not be exceeded. In wing strain the most important factors are the force of gravity and the force of lift which gives the measure of the sustaining force, and their components which are perpendicular to the lifting surfaces. This reports methods for using the wing strain meter.
