Single crystal tubes of beta alumina

Edge-defined, film-fed growth process allows both tubular shapes and single crystallinity to be achieved. Beta alumina in single crystal form makes possible membranes with improved conductivities. Single crystal membranes also eliminate problems associated with electrical short circuiting of membrane due to possible sodium metal diffusion.

Thermal expansion compatibility of ceramic chip capacitors mounted on alumina substrates.

The thermal expansion coefficients of a representative sample of BaTiO3 and TiO2 ceramic chip capacitors and alumina substrates have been examined. These data have revealed large potential mechanical stresses under thermal cycling. A mathematical analysis of a composite model of the capacitor to predict the thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity and an analysis of the capacitor-substrate system to predict the magnitude of thermally induced stresses have been conducted. In all cases studied, thermally induced stresses great enough to cause capacitor body rupture or termination failure was predicted.

Conductivity of boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina

The ionic and electrochemical polarization characteristics of two boules of single crystal sodium beta-alumina (Na2O.8Al2O3), 2 cm in diameter, were investigated over the range of 25 to 300 C using 2- and 4-probe ac and dc techniques with reversible and ion-blocking electrodes. Textural (or internal) polarization at 27 C was present only in boule 1 which cleaved easily. Interfacial polarization, using solid sodium electrodes, was present at 27 C in the 2-probe conductivities for both boules. Cleaning with liquid sodium at 300 C reduced its magnitude, but some interfacial polarization was still present in the 2-probe conductivities for boule 2 below about 140 C. Above 140 C, with liquid sodium electrodes, the 2-probe conductivities, essentially polarization-free, were given by KT = 3300 exp(-3650/RT). The conductivity of boule 2 at 180 C remained essentially constant with increasing current density up to about 140 milliamps per square centimeter.

Feasibility and process scale-up low cost alumina fibers for advanced Re-usable Surface Insulation (RSI)

The objective of this program was to establish feasibility of a process to produce low cost aluminum oxide fibers having sufficient strength, flexibility, and thermal stability for multiple re-use at temperatures to 1480 C in advanced RSI type heat shields for reentry vehicles. Using bench-scale processing apparatus, the Alcoa 'Saphiber' process was successfully modified to produce nominally 8 microns diameter polycrystalline alpha-alumina fiber. Thermal stability was demonstrated in vacuum reheating tests to 1371 C and in atmospheric reheating to 1483 C. Individual fiber properties of strength, modulus, and flexibility were not determined because of friability and short length of the fiber. Rigidized tile produced from fiber of nominally 8, 20 and 40 micron diameter had thermal conductivities significantly higher than those of RSI SiO2 or mullite at relatively low temperature but became comparable above about 1000 C. Tile densities were high due to short fiber length, especially in the coarser diameter fiber. No significant effect of fiber diameter on thermal properties could be determined form the data. Mechanical properties of tiles deteriorated as fiber diameter increased.

Effect of microstructure on Na/+/ diffusion in beta alumina

The effect of microstructural features, such as grain size and orientation, on sodium ion diffusion in polycrystalline beta alumina is investigated; the ionic solid is suitable for use in high-energy and power density batteries. Two types of hot-pressed polycrystalline samples are studied, one with grains highly oriented in the direction normal to the pressing direction, the other with significantly less preferred orientation normal to the pressing direction. Results of the experimental assessments indicate that grain size and diffusion path tortuosity have little effect on diffusion kinetics, while grain boundary type and grain aspect ratio are important factors in determining the diffusion rate.

Controlled metal-film deposition on alumina substrates

Report describes results of investigation of preparation, nucleation and controlled growth of particulate deposits (palladium and iron) on electron-transparent alumina substrates. Results indicate that characteristic properties of metal deposits are strongly dependent on cleanliness, phase, and crystallographic orientation of substrate.

Thermal exposure effects on the mechanical properties of a polycrystalline alumina fiber/aluminum matrix composite

The effects of thermal exposures and elevated test temperature on the mechanical properties of a unidirectional polycrystalline alumina fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composite were investigated. Test temperatures up to 590 K and 2500 hours exposures at 590 K did not significantly affect fiber dominated properties but did severely degrade matrix dominated properties. Fiber strength, degraded by the fabrication process, was restored by post fabrication thermal exposures. Possible degradation mechanisms are discussed.

Packed Alumina Absorbs Hypergolic Vapors

Beds of activated alumina effective as filters to remove hypergolic vapors from gas streams. Beds absorb such substances as nitrogen oxides and hydrazines and may also absorb acetylene, ethylene, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, butadiene, butene, styrene, toluene, and xoylene. Bed has no moving parts such as pumps, blowers and mixers. Reliable and energy-conservative. Bed readily adapted to any size from small portable units for use where little vapor release is expected to large stationary units for extensive transfer operations.

Rhombohedral twinning in alumina

Alumina single crystals were deformed in compression along the c axes at temperatures of 625 to 1373 K. Large scale deformation by rhombohedral twinning was observed at a constant resolved shear stress of only 12.6 MPa between about 900 and 1373 K. Below 900 K, the twinning stress for specimens with ground surfaces rose rapidly to 227 MPa at 625 K. A model for twin growth in the absence of dislocation slip is proposed.

Structure and grain coarsening during the sintering of alumina

The pore surface area (Sp) and grain-boundary area (Sgb) were measured during the sintering of undoped and doped (100 ppm MgO) alumina compacts. Since the presence of the additive affects only Sgb (raising it at a given value of the density), pinning of the boundaries by solid-solution drag is the only additive function evidenced by the results. The importance of such pinning even at densities as low as 75 percent of theoretical is linked to the existence of microstructural inhomogeneities.

The effect of texture on the crack growth resistance of alumina

The crack growth resistance of a textured, extruded alumina body was compared with that of an isotropic, isopressed body of similar grain size, density, and chemistry. R-curve levels reflected the preferred orientation; however, R-curve slopes (dK sub IR/d Delta a) were the same in all instances, implying a similar crack growth resistive mechanism. Three orthogonal orientations of crack growth in the two structures exhibited similar forms of K sub IR versus Delta-a curves, for which a schematic diagram for polycrystalline ceramics is proposed.

Tribological properties of alumina-boria-silicate fabric from 25 to 850 C

Demanding tribological properties are required of the materials used for the sliding seal between the sidewalls and the lower wall of the variable area hypersonic engine. Temperatures range from room temperature and below to operating temperatures of 1000 C in an environment of air, hydrogen, and water vapor. Candidate sealing materials for this application are an alumina-boria-silicate, ceramic, fabric rope sliding against the engine walls which may be made from copper- or nickel-based alloys. Using a pin-on-disk tribometer, the friction and wear properties of some of these potential materials and possible lubrication methods are evaluated. The ceramic fabric rope displayed unacceptably high friction coefficients (0.6 to 1.3) and, thus, requires lubrication. Sputtered thin films of gold, silver, and CaF2 reduced the friction by a factor of two. Sprayed coatings of boride nitride did not effectively lubricate the fabric. Static heat treatment tests at 950 C indicate that the fabric is chemically attacked by large quantities of silver, CaF2, and boron nitride. Sputtered films or powder impregnation of the fabric with gold may provide adequate lubrication up to 1000 C without showing any chemical attack.

Synthesis and characterization of high-T(sub c) screen-printed Y-Ba-Cu-O films on alumina

Thick films of YBa2Cu3O(sub 7-x) have been deposited on highly polished alumina substrates by the screen printing technique. To optimize the post-printing heat treatment, the films were baked at various temperatures for different lengths of time and oxygen-annealed at a lower temperature. The resulting films were characterized by electrical resistivity measurements, x-ray diffraction, and optical and scanning electron microscopy. Properties of the films were found to be highly sensitive to the post-printing thermal treatment. Films baked for 15 min at 1000 C in oxygen were hard, adherent, near single phase, and superconducting with T(sub c)(onset) approx 96 K, T(sub c)(zero) approx 66 K and Delta T sub c (10 to 90 percent) approx 10 K.

Glass properties in the yttria-alumina-silica system

The glass formation region in the yttria-alumina-silica system was investigated. Properties of glasses containing 25 to 55 wt pct yttria were measured and the effect of the composition was determined. The density, refractive index, thermal-expansion coefficient, and microhardness increased with increasing yttria content. The dissolution rate in 1N HCl increased with increasing yttria content and temperature. These glasses were also found to have high electrical resistivity.

Containerless laser-induced flourescence study of vaporization and optical properties for sapphire and alumina

Evaporation of aluminum oxide was studied from 1800 to 2327 K by laser-induced flourescence (LIF) detection of Al atom vapor over sapphire and alumina spheres that were levitated in an argon gas jet and heated with a continuous wave CO2 laser. Optical properties were determined from apparent specimen temperatures measured with an optical pyrometer and true temperatures deduced from the LIF intensity versus temperature measurements using the known temperature dependence of the Al atom vapor concentration in equilibrium with Al2O3. The effects of impurities and dissolved oxygen on the high-temperature optical properties of aluminum oxide were discussed.

Alumina-Enhanced Thermal Barrier

Rigid, fibrous ceramic tile material called "alumina-enhanced thermal barrier" (AETB) extends temperature capability of insulating materials. Material has obvious potential for terrestrial use in kilns, furnaces, heat engines, and other applications in which light weight and high operating temperature are specified. Three kinds of ceramic fibers are blended, molded, and sintered to make refractory tiles.

Ultrasonic imaging of textured alumina

Ultrasonic images representing the bulk attenuation and velocity of a set of alumina samples were obtained by a pulse-echo contact scanning technique. The samples were taken from larger bodies that were chemically similar but were processed by extrusion or isostatic processing. The crack growth resistance and fracture toughness of the larger bodies were found to vary with processing method and test orientation. The results presented here demonstrate that differences in texture that contribute to variations in structural performance can be revealed by analytic ultrasonic techniques.
