Analog Signal Multiplexing System for the IOTA Proton Injector

he Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) Facility at FNAL is a dedicated research and development center focused on advancing particle accelerator technologies for future applications worldwide. Currently, a key objective of FAST Opera-tions is to commission the 2.5 MeV IOTA Proton Injec-tor (IPI) and enable proton injection into the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) storage ring. The low and medium-energy sections of the IPI include four frame-style dipole trims and two multi-function cor-rectors with independently controlled coils, requiring readout of 32 analog channels for current and voltage monitoring in total. To reduce cost and optimize rack space within the PLC-based control system, a 32-to-4 analog signal multiplexing system was designed and implemented. This system enables real-time readback of excitation parameters from all magnetic correctors. This paper presents the design, construction, implementation, and performance of the multiplexing system.

Dissipative Dark Substructure: The Consequences of Atomic Dark Matter on Milky Way Analog Subhalos

Using cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations, we explore the properties of subhalos in Milky Way analogs that contain a subcomponent of atomic dark matter (ADM). ADM differs from cold dark matter (CDM) due to the presence of self-interactions that lead to energy dissipation, analogous to standard model baryons. This model can arise in dark sectors that are natural and theoretically motivated extensions to the standard model. The simulations used in this work were carried out using GIZMO and utilize the FIRE-2 galaxy formation physics in the standard model baryonic sector. For the parameter points we consider, the ADM gas cools efficiently, allowing it to collapse to the center of subhalos. This increases a subhalo's central density and affects its orbit, with more subhalos surviving small pericentric passages. The subset of subhalos that host satellite galaxies have cuspier density profiles and smaller stellar half-mass radii relative to CDM. The entire population of dwarf galaxies produced in the ADM simulations is more compact than those seen in CDM simulations, unable to reproduce the entire diversity of observed dwarf galaxy structures. Additionally, we also identify a population of highly compact subhalos that consist nearly entirely of ADM and form in the central region of the host, where they can leave distinctive imprints in the baryonic disk. This work presents the first detailed exploration of subhalo properties in a strongly dissipative dark matter scenario, providing intuition for how other regions of ADM parameter space, as well as other dark sector models, would impact galactic-scale observables.

Milky Way-est: Cosmological Zoom-in Simulations with Large Magellanic Cloud and Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus Analogs

Abstract We present Milky Way-est, a suite of 20 cosmological cold-dark-matter-only zoom-in simulations of Milky Way (MW)-like host halos. Milky Way-est hosts are selected such that they (i) are consistent with the MW’s measured halo mass and concentration, (ii) accrete a Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC)-like (≈10 11 M ⊙ ) subhalo within the last 2 Gyr on a realistic orbit, placing them near 50 kpc from the host center at z ≈ 0, and (iii) undergo a >1:5 sub-to-host halo mass ratio merger with a Gaia–Sausage–Enceladus (GSE)-like system at early times (0.67 < z < 3). Hosts satisfying these LMC and GSE constraints constitute <1% of all halos in the MW’s mass range, and their total masses grow rapidly at late times due to LMC analog accretion. Compared to hosts of a similar final halo mass that are not selected to include LMC and GSE analogs, Milky Way-est hosts contain 22% more subhalos with present-day virial masses above 10 8 M ⊙ throughout the virial radius, on average. This enhancement reaches ≈80% in the inner 100 kpc and is largely, if not entirely, due to LMC-associated subhalos. These systems also induce spatial anisotropy in Milky Way-est subhalo populations, with ≈60% of the total subhalo population within 100 kpc found in the current direction of the LMC. Meanwhile, we find that GSE-associated subhalos do not significantly contribute to present-day Milky Way-est subhalo populations. These results provide context for our Galaxy’s dark matter structure and subhalo population and will help interpret a range of measurements that are currently only possible in the MW.

Linear analog dc voltage-to-pulse-width converter

Circuit converts a dc analog input signal to pulse widths that are proportional to the input signal voltage. The circuit would be particularly useful as an analog-to-digital converter where low power, ruggedness, reliability, and good linearity are prime requirements.

Conversion of cardiac performance data in analog form for digital computer entry

A system is presented which will reduce analog cardiac performance data and convert the results to digital form for direct entry into a commercial time-shared computer. Circuits are discussed which perform the measurement and digital conversion of instantaneous systolic and diastolic parameters from the analog blood pressure waveform. Digital averaging over a selected number of heart cycles is performed on these measurements, as well as those of flow and heart rate. The determination of average cardiac output and peripheral resistance, including trends, is the end result after processing by digital computer.

An analog-to-digital conversion system with a logarithmic characteristic

Detailed analysis of an analog-to-digital conversion system consisting of a linear converter and a logarithmic amplifier containing nonlinear elements. It is shown that the small-signal resolution of such a system is much greater than that of linear systems used under the same conditions. A design for a low-power analog-to-digital converter operating at medium speed with a large input signal variation field is outlined.

Isolated transfer of analog signals

Technique transfers analog signal levels across high isolation boundary without circuit performance being affected by magnetizing reactance or leakage inductance. Transfers of analog information across isolated boundary are made by interrupting signal flow, with switch, in such a manner as to produce alternating signal which is applied to transformer.

A slow-speed multiple-channel analog-to-digital data logging system

The system was developed to record from one up to a maximum of sixteen channels of analog data onto magnetic tape. Each analog channel of data can be sampled at rates of 1, 2, 6, 12, or 60 times per minute. The system is divided into three subunits: a digital clock, an incremental magnetic tape recorder, and a sequential converter. The interfacing requirements of these subunits are presented.

Some textures in Apollo 12 lunar igneous rocks and in terrestrial analogs.

The interpretation of immature crystallization and some lunar textures characterized by it are the principal objectives of this investigation. A comparative and selective approach is adopted, and particular reference is made to the form and textural relations of olivine in 12009 and of pyroxenes and plagioclase in 12021, and to terrestrial analogs. The optic orientation of the olivines in 12009 is determined, and their skeletal crystallization is illustrated and evaluated. Microprobe and optical data are associated in a textural analysis of an analog from the upper contact of a minor intrusion in Skye. The optic orientation of pyroxene enclosed in plagioclase cores is determined, and the results are plotted stereographically. The need for greater precision in the use of textural terms is stressed, and a new term - intrafasciculate - is introduced for textures in which pyroxene has crystallized within hollow, skeletal plagioclase. Apollo 12 pyroxene-phyric basalts are texturally reviewed, and the crystallization of the phenocrysts is discussed, emphasis being placed on size-independence of skeletal growth.

Analog computer implementation of four instantaneous distortion indices

Dynamic distortion data obtained from inlet engine compatibility test on a J85-GE-13 engine are used to establish the feasibility of using on-line generated indices as control signals. These data are analyzed over time increments of 1.3 seconds on an analog computer. The analog program of four instantaneous distortion indices and their results are presented. A modified approach in determining the extent of distortion is also presented.
