OnAIR: Applications of The NASA On-Board Artificial Intelligence Research Platform

Infusing artificial intelligence algorithms into production aerospace systems can be challenging due to costs, timelines, and a risk averse industry. We introduce the Onboard Artificial Intelligence Research (OnAIR) platform, an open source software pipeline and cognitive architecture tool which enables full life cycle AI research for on-board intelligent systems. We begin a description and user walk-through of the OnAIR tool. Next we describe four use cases of OnAIR for both research and deployed onboard applications, detailing their use of OnAIR and the benefits it provided to development and function of each respective scenario. We conclude with remarks on future work, future planned deployments and goals for forward progression of OnAIR as a tool to enable larger AI and aerospace research community.

Fault Tolerant Characteristics of Artificial Neural Network Electronic Hardware

The fault tolerant characteristics of analog-VLSI artificial neural network (with 32 neurons and 532 synapses) chips are studied by exposing them to high energy electrons, high energy protons, and gamma ionizing radiations under biased and unbiased conditions. The biased chips became nonfunctional after receiving a cumulative dose of less than 20 krads, while the unbiased chips only started to show degradation with a cumulative dose of over 100 krads. As the total radiation dose increased, all the components demonstrated graceful degradation. The analog sigmoidal function of the neuron became steeper (increase in gain), current leakage from the synapses progressively shifted the sigmoidal curve, and the digital memory of the synapses and the memory addressing circuits began to gradually fail. From these radiation experiments, we can learn how to modify certain designs of the neural network electronic hardware without using radiation-hardening techniques to increase its reliability and fault tolerance.

Biomimetic actuators using electroactive polymers (EAP) as artificial muscles

Evolution has resolved many of nature's challenges leading to lasting solutions with maximal performance and effective use of resources. Nature's inventions have always inspired human achievements leading to effective materials, structures, tools, mechanisms, processes, algorithms, methods, systems and many other benefits. The field of mimicking nature is known as Biomimetics and one of its topics includes electroactive polymers that gain the moniker artificial muscles. Integrating EAP with embedded sensors, self-repair and many other capabilities that are used in composite materials can add greatly to the capability of smart biomimetic systems. Such development would enable fascinating possibilities potentially turning science fiction ideas into engineering reality.
