LCLS-II Cryomodules Production Experience and Lessons Learned Towards LCLS-II-HE Project

LCLS-II is an upgrade project for the linear coherent light source (LCLS) at SLAC. The LCLS-II linac consists of thirty-five 1.3 GHz and two 3.9 GHz superconducting RF (SRF) continuous wave (CW) cryomodules with high quality factor cavities. Cryomodules were produced at Fermilab and at Jefferson Lab in collaboration with SLAC. Fermilab successfully completed the assembly, testing and delivery of seventeen 1.3 GHz and three 3.9 GHz cryomodules. LCLS-II-HE is a planned upgrade project to LCLS-II. The LCLS-II-HE linac will consist of twenty-three 1.3 GHz cryomodules with high gradient and high quality factor cavities. This paper presents LCLS-II-HE cryomodule production plans, emphasizing the improvements done based on the challenges, mitigations, and lessons learned from LCLS-II.

Multifamily Air Leakage Evaluation: A Modular Case Study

The purpose of this case study is to compare the air leakage rates of modular and site-built multifamily dwelling units. The methods, materials, and equipment were observed to be very similar in the modular and site-constructed units in this case study. The installation quality of building envelope measures such as insulation and air barrier appeared to be better for modular construction, because they were installed in a controlled, factory setting. Through field observations, we identified cosmetic damage to the envelope of modular units following transport to the building site, but with no resulting significant air leakage pathways. However, we did see air leakage pathways resulting from field modifications to the envelope of modular units to accommodate structural and mechanical connections. We found that the extensive use of through-wall HVAC systems, combined with the transport, placement, and rework of modular units may compromise the high-quality envelope installation and airtightness observed in the factory without careful planning and/or design. Opportunities for improvement identified from the tested modular dwelling units include minimizing and optimally locating penetrations, pre-cutting and detailing penetrations at the factory where possible, properly sealing field modifications, and using split HVAC systems in place of through-wall packaged systems.

US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project: MQXFA11 shipping incident report

The truck transporting the MQXFA11 magnet from LBNL to BNL was involved in an accident on 7/20/22. It was rear ended by another truck. Drivers were not injured. The main hit took place on the right back corner. The truck with the MQXFA11 magnet was towed to a tow yard in Rockdale, IL (~50 min drive from Fermilab). Subsequently, it was moved on another truck and moved to Fermilab. Fermilab employees added 3 accelerometers on the crate before it was moved on the new truck and attended all loading/unloading operations at the tow yard and at FNAL. The magnet arrived at FNAL on July 28 th . Upon arrival a visual inspection was performed. Accelerometers were removed and shock data were analyzed. Electrical checkout and a metrology survey were carried out. Strain data were also collected from the fiber optics installed on two coils and compared with data obtained before shipment. This report presents a summary of results. More pictures and details can be found at: https://indico.fnal.gov/event/55698/

MQXFA Series Magnet Production Specification: US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project

The purpose of this document is to define the specifications for the structure fabrication and assembly of MQXFA series magnets to be used by the US High-Luminosity LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP). Magnets fabricated according to these specifications are expected to allow MQXFA magnets to meet the MQXFA Functional Requirements Specification. These specifications for the fabrication of MQXFA series magnets are based on the R&D performed by the US LHC Accelerator Research Program (LARP) and the development performed by AUP, in collaboration with CERN, through fabrication and test of pre-series coils and magnets.

LCLS-II-HE Status at Fermilab

The LCLS-II-HE project is an upgrade to the Linac Coherent Light Source facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Fermilab is part of the LCLS-II-HE collaboration and will deliver 14 cryomodules to SLAC for LCLS-II-HE. These cryomodules consist of eight 1.3 GHz 9-cell cavities. Cryomodule production is in progress, and four cryomodules have been delivered to SLAC. One of the cryomodules already delivered is the verification cryomodule that reached 200 MV total voltage in continuous wave mode. Status of cryomodule production, and lessons learned will be presented. Fermilab is also designing a buncher cryomodule as part of a low emittance injector design for the project. The design is near completion, and status will be reported.

Analysis of the MQXFA Low Beta Quadrupoles for HL-LHC after 50% magnet assembly complete +

The US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) is fabricating the MQXFA magnets to be used in the Q1 and Q3 Inner Triplet elements of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC). This is the first production of Nb3Sn magnets for a particle accelerator, together with the MQXFB magnets for Q2a and Q2b. Here we show status and some results of MQXFA magnets fabrication and vertical test.

The aerodynamics of a wind-tunnel fan

The vortex blade-element theory modified to apply to an axial fan working in a duct is reviewed. Thrust and power coefficients for a fan are identified with the corresponding coefficients for airplane propellers. The relation of pressure produced by the fan to the blade-element coefficients is developed. The distribution of axial velocity of fluid through a fan is assumed to be controlled by the fan itself. The radial distribution of tangential velocity imported by the fan to fluid moving through the fan is shown to be independent of the axial-velocity distribution. A nondimensional coefficient, designated the rotation constant, is introduced. This constant is based solely upon design information. The use of the rotation constant in simplifying the design of a fan for a specific operating condition is demonstrated. Based on the use of the rotation constant, a graphical method is outlined by which the performance of a given fan in a given wind tunnel may be predicted and by which the distributions of axial velocity of the fluid through the fan under various operating conditions may be established.
