Techno-Economic Models are Instrumental in Analyzing Decarbonization Strategies

This presentations provides a high-level overview of the NETL-developed techno-economic models associated with the CO2 transport and CO2 storage components of the carbon capture and storage (CCS)/carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) value chain. It also discusses the models’ capabilities through the discussion of select modeling applications (both internal and external) and highlights current model modifications and future work. It was presented at the CCUS 2023 conference, organized and presented by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) and held in Houston, Texas, April 25-27, 2023.

Machine Learning Based Fracture Network Quantification at the IBDP CO2 Sequestration Site

This poster presents the latest results highlighted in SMART phase II task 4 of fracture network and mapping based on IBDP field data measurement. The results will be coupled into the dynamic modeling and simulation study to insight the impact of the fracture in the reservoir system. Such impacts will be applied to AI/ML development for training and test for science-informed decision making support for CO2 storage.

Nitrogen Vacancy Centers in Diamond for Stress Sensing Applications: Theory and Experiments

Sensing of stress under high elevated environmental conditions with high resolution has critical importance for range of applications including earth’s subsurface scanning and geological CO2 storage monitoring. Using first principles density functional theory (DFT) approach combined with the theoretical modelling of low energy Hamiltonian, here we investigate a novel approach to detect unprecedented level of pressure by taking advantage of solid-state electron’s spin of Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamond. We computationally explore the effect of strain on the defect band edges and band gaps by varying the lattice parameters of diamond supercell hosting a single NV center. A low energy Hamiltonian is developed that includes effect of stress on the energy level of ±1 spin manifold at the ground state. By quantifying the energy level shift and split, we predict the pressure sensing of up to 0.3 MPa/√Hz. We show superiority of the quantum sensing over traditional optical sensing techniques by discussing our results from DFT and theoretical modelling for the frequency shift per unit pressure. The proposed quantum stress sensing could be useful to measure earth’s subsurface vibrations. Our results open avenues for development of sensing technology with a high sensitivity and resolution under extreme pressure conditions that potentially has a wider applicability than existing pressure sensing technologies.

Investigation of Scale Deposition and Wellbore Corrosion in Carbonated Brine Injection: A Simulation Study

Carbonated brine injection (CBI), which involves dissolving CO2 in produced water to be injected into deep geologic reservoirs, is a method to manage produced brine, carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration, and reduce anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. This low-risk CO2 storage strategy can leverage the existing saltwater disposal infrastructure and well resources. However, the potential for corrosion and scale deposition are a major challenge for carbonated brine which may result in subsidence, wellbore failure, casing failure, and cement failure. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the wellbore materials compatibility with carbonated brine water during the injection process, for repurposing Class II saltwater disposal wells for CBI.

Fracture Networks Imaging in CO2 Injection Zones in IBDP Site: An Unsupervised Machine Learning Application with Multiple Datasets

This is the conference paper accompanying a poster presentation at the 17th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies GHGT-17 held in Calgary, Canada, October 20-24 , 2024. This work highlights the integration of unsupervised machine learning (ML) techniques as a transformative tool for advancing understanding of CO2 injection into reservoirs that could potentially contribute to optimizing injection strategies and reservoir management, ultimately bolstering the efficacy and sustainability of CO2 storage.

Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage with Supercritical CO2 Cycles and Solar Heat Input

Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (PTES) is an energy storage device that uses grid electricity to drive a heat pump that generates hot and cold storage reservoirs. This thermal potential is later used to power a heat engine and return electricity to the grid. In this article, a PTES variant that uses supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) as the working fluid is introduced. sCO2-PTES cycles have higher work ratios and power densities than the systems based on ideal gases that have been investigated to date. Furthermore, sCO2- PTES cycles may achieve higher round-trip efficiencies for a given hot storage temperature (up to 78% at 560°C). The sensitivity of PTES cycles to loss factors such as isentropic efficiencies and temperature differences between the power cycle and storage fluid is investigated. A second concept whereby an sCO2- PTES cycle is integrated with concentrating solar power (CSP) is introduced. This concept ‘time-shifts’ the recompression of an sCO2 recompression cycle to a period of lower electricity prices and stores the heat. When solar heat is dispatched, the recompressor may be avoided as the required heat is obtained from storage, thereby leading to increased heat engine efficiencies. The net work output of this integrated system is 10-18% greater than the conventional recompression cycle. Combining PTES with a CSP power cycle is therefore shown to improve the dispatch of solar heat as well as providing electricity storage services.

Pathways to CO2 Utilization and Storage for the Intermountain West

The presentation, delivered at American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Carbon, Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) held in Houston, Texas, April 25–27, 2023, provides a detailed perspective on CO2 utilization and storage as a deep decarbonization pathway as it relates to states that make up the Intermountain West (I-WEST) region of the U.S. Content within shows findings from evaluation of the opportunity and potential value delivery that exists for CCUS to deploy at significant scale in the I-WEST region considering the region’s prominent enabling factors. This work is part of a larger initiative involving the development of a regional, stakeholder-informed technology “roadmap” for a sustainable and equitable transition to carbon neutral in the I-WEST.
