Random matrix model of the Virasoro minimal string

The model of two dimensional quantum gravity defining the Virasoro minimal string, presented recently by Collier, Eberhardt, Mühlmann, and Rodriguez, was also shown to be perturbatively (in topology) equivalent to a random matrix model. An alternative definition is presented here, in terms of double-scaled orthogonal polynomials, thereby allowing direct access to nonperturbative physics. Already at leading order, the defining string equation’s properties yield valuable information about the nonperturbative fate of the model, confirming that the case ( c = 25 , c ^ = 1 ) (central charges of spacelike and timelike Liouville sectors) is special, by virtue of sharing certain key features of the N = 1 supersymmetric JT gravity string equation. Solutions of the full string equation are constructed using a special limit, and the (Cardy) spectral density is completed to all genus and beyond. The distributions of the underlying discrete spectra are readily accessible too, as is the spectral form factor. Some examples of these are exhibited. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Supersymmetric Virasoro minimal strings

A random matrix model definition of a family of N = 1 supersymmetric extensions of the Virasoro minimal string of Collier, Eberhardt, Mühlmann, and Rodriguez is presented. An analysis of the defining string equations shows that the models all naturally have unambiguous nonperturbative completions, which are explicitly supplied by the double-scaled orthogonal polynomial techniques employed. Perturbatively, the multiloop correlation functions of the model define a special supersymmetric class of “quantum volumes,” generalizing the prototype case, some of which are computed. Specific heats for quantum BTZ black holes in extended thermodynamics

It was shown recently that extended black hole thermodynamics, where the cosmological constant is a dynamical variable, giving rise to a pressure p and its conjugate volume V , can be given a natural setting in the context of braneworld models. We study the specific heat capacities C p ( T ) and C V ( T ) of the quantum version of the Bañados, Teitelboim, and Zanelli (BTZ) black hole that lives in the induced gravity theory on the brane. There are multiple branches of solutions, and we explore and characterize key features of the possible behavior. We identify and study a critical point in the space of solutions where both specific heats diverge. In the regime of weak backreaction where we are close to an ordinary theory of gravity, the black hole is “subentropic,” but as backreaction is increased we note that there are parts of parameter space that has regions where it is “superentropic.” While a study of the sign of the specific heats does not always show a corresponding instability (conjectured in the literature), the presence of strong backreaction makes interpretation unclear. Nonperturbative random matrix model of N = 2 JT supergravity

It is shown how to nonperturbatively define a random matrix model that captures key physics of N = 2 Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravity, going well beyond the perturbative topological expansion defined recently by Turiaci and Witten. A decomposition into an infinite family of certain multicritical models is derived, leading to the definition of a nonlinear ordinary differential equation from which the physics may be computed. Bogomol’nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) states are naturally described by the model. The nonperturbative completions of the spectral densities for non-BPS multiplets are readily extracted. Uniqueness criteria for the Virasoro-Shapiro amplitude

The scattering amplitudes of string theory exhibit many extraordinary properties. But are they the unique mathematical objects to do so? Recently, it has been shown how the spectrum and amplitudes of open string theory follow directly from the assumptions of faster than power-law falloff at high energies and a property dubbed level truncation. At present there is no analogous principle for closed string scattering, which is famously rigid and naively impervious to modification. In this paper we analytically bootstrap the spectrum and four-point amplitudes of the closed string—together with a parametrized space of deformations—from conditions on high-energy falloff and level truncation. While these deformations exhibit the same Regge scaling as pure gravity, in the tensionless limit they reproduce remarkable extremal amplitudes that have appeared in bottom-up studies of positivity.

Extracting forces from noisy dynamics in dusty plasmas

Extracting environmental forces from noisy data is a common yet challenging task in complex physical systems. Machine learning (ML) represents a robust approach to this problem, yet is mostly tested on simulated data with known parameters. Here we use supervised ML to extract the electrostatic, dissipative, and stochastic forces acting on micron-sized charged particles levitated in an argon plasma (dusty plasma). By tracking the sub-pixel motion of particles in subsequent images, we successfully estimated these forces from their random motion. The experiments contained important sources of non-Gaussian noise, such as drift and pixel-locking, representing a data mismatch from methods used to analyze simulated data with purely Gaussian noise. Our model was trained on simulated particle trajectories that included all of these artifacts, and used more than 100 dynamical and statistical features, resulting in a prediction with 50\% better accuracy than conventional methods. Lastly, in systems with two interacting particles, the model provided non-contact measurements of the particle charge and Debye length in the plasma environment.

Micromechanical origin of heat transfer to granular flow

Heat transfer across a granular flow is comprised of two resistances in series : near the wall and within the bulk particle bed, neither of which is well understood due to the lack of experimental probes to separate their respective contribution. Here, we use a frequency modulated photothermal technique to separately quantify the thermal resistances in the near-wall and the bulk bed regions of particles in flowing states. Compared to the stationary state, the flowing leads to a higher near-wall resistance and a lower thermal conductivity of bulk beds. As a result, coupled with discrete element method simulation, we show that the near-wall resistance can be explained by particle diffusion in granular flows.
