Influence of friction dampers on torsional blade flutter

This paper deals with the stabilizing effects of dry friction on torsional blade flutter. A lumped parameter model with single degree of freedom per blade has been used to represent the rotor stage. The well-known cascade theories for incompressible and supersonic flows have been used to determine the allowable increase in fluid velocity relative to the blade. It has been found that the effectiveness of friction dampers in controlling flutter can be substantial.

High-Temperature Vibration Damper

Device for damping vibrations functions at temperatures up to 400 degrees F. Dampens vibrational torque loads as high as 1,000 lb-in. but compact enough to be part of helicopter rotor hub. Rotary damper absorbs energy from vibrating rod, dissipating it in turbulent motion of viscous hydraulic fluid forced by moving vanes through small orifices.

A novel form of damper for turbo-machinery

Anti-swirl vanes are used by some manufacturers to delay the full development of half speed circulation in annular clearance spaces. The objective is to reduce the aerodynamic cross-coupling in the forward direction. The novel feature of a jet damper is a number of tangential nozzles discharging against the rotor surface speed. Some preliminary results on a 33.9 Kg rotor demonstrate that significant reductions in amplitude are obtained at the synchronous critical speeds.

Experimental measurement of the dynamic pressure distribution in a squeeze film bearing damper executing circular centered orbits

A review of previous experimental measurements of squeeze film damper (SFD) forces is given. Measurements by the authors of SFD pressure fields and force coefficients, for circular centered orbits with epsilon = 0.5, are described and compared with computer predictions. For Reynolds numbers over the range 2-6, the effect of fluid inertia on the pressure fields and forces is found to be significant.

Survey of impact damper performance

An overall picture of the impact damper is obtained by using time-history solutions of the system motion for the oscillator in free decay. The impactor behavior depends very strongly on oscillator amplitude, and free decay can sample the full range of behavior from an infinite number of impacts per cycle at high amplitude to no impacts at low amplitude. The overall picture cannot be obtained by analysis of steady-state forced response. Yet, the predictions are relevant to forced response behavior when the damping is relatively light. Three major regimes of impact behavior are shown to exist: low, middle and high amplitude ranges.

Numerical analysis of discrete fractional integrodifferential structural dampers

This paper develops solution algorithms enabling the handling of the dynamic response of nonlinear structures contained discretely attached dampers modeled by fractional integrodifferential operators of the Grunwald-Liouville-Riemann type. The development consists of two levels of formulation, namely: (1) numerical approximations of fractional operators and, (2) the establishment of global level implicit schemes enabling the solution to nonlinear structural formulations. To generalize the overall results, error estimates are derived for the fractional operator approximation algorithm. These enable an ongoing optimization of solution efficiency for a given error tolerance. To benchmark the scheme, the results of several numerical experiments are presented. These illustrate the numerical characteristics of the overall formulation.

Design of a recovery scheme for the Galileo spacecraft in the event of nutation damper failure

This paper discusses the design and testing of remedial measures that can be taken to achieve reasonable nutation damping of the Galileo spacecraft in the event of failure of its boom damper in flight. One scheme exploits the effects of payload motion on the nutational stability of a spinning spacecraft. This scheme demands that the spacecraft motion compensation algorithm be enabled with the scan platform bore sight pointed in a well chosen direction to produce rapid damping of spacecraft nutation. A second method suggested for nutation damping is a thruster-based open loop control algorithm, utilizing a pair of thrusters as actuators.

The Stability of the Steady State and Bistable Response of a Flexible Rotor Supported on Squeeze Film Dampers

The stability of the steady state response, the bistable response, and the jumping characteristics are analyzed for the case when a system accelerates or decelerates through the bistable region of a flexible rotor-centralized squeeze film damper system. It was found that the system steady state responses have two unstable regions. The larger the unbalance parameter and the smaller the bearing parameter and the external damping ratio, the easier it is for the system to lose stability. The larger the mass ratio and the smaller the stiffness ratio, the lower the threshold rotating speed of instability. The instability of the system steady-state response determined here is due to the system nonsynchronous response in many cases.

Measurements of Pressure Distributions and Force Coefficients in a Squeeze Film Damper. Part 1: Fully Open Ended Configuration

Measurements of pressure distributions and force coefficients were carried out in two types of squeeze film dampers, executing a circular centered orbit, an open-ended configuration, and a partially sealed one, in order to investigate the effect of fluid inertia and cavitation on pressure distributions and force coefficients. Dynamic pressure measurements were carried out for two orbit radii, epsilon 0.5 and 0.8. It was found that the partially sealed configuration was less influenced by fluid inertia than the open ended configuration.

Damper Spring For Omega Seal

Damper spring reduces deflections of omega-cross-section seal, reducing probability of failure and extending life of seal. Spring is split ring with U-shaped cross section. Placed inside omega seal and inserted with seal into seal cavity. As omega seal compressed into cavity, spring and seal make contact near convolution of seal, and spring becomes compressed also. During operation, when seal dynamically loaded, spring limits deflection of seal, reducing stress on seal.

Computational issues in optimal tuning and placement of passive dampers

The effectiveness of viscous elements in introducing damping in a structure is a function of several variables including their number, their location in the structure, and their physical properties. In this paper, the optimal damper placement and tuning problem is posed to optimize these variables. Both discrete and continuous optimization problems are formulated and solved corresponding, respectively, to the problems of placement of passive elements and to the tuning of their parameters. The paper particularly emphasizes the critical computational issues resulting from the optimization formulations. Numerical results involving a lightly damped testbed structure are presented.

An Unsteady Long Bearing Squeeze Film Damper Model: Statically Eccentric Operation - Part 2

This paper, the second of a two-part series, presents results of an unsteady rotordynamic analysis of a long-bearing squeeze film damper executing orbits about an off center position using a fluid circuit approach. A series of nodes and branches represent the geometry of the flow circuit. The mass and momentum conservation equations are solved to predict the pressure distribution in the squeeze film. The motion of the bearing is simulated by the variation of geometry within the flow path. This effort represents the first modeling approach which allows for an arbitrary orbit size about an arbitrary position.

Improved Model of a Mercury Ring Damper

A short document discusses the general problem of mathematical modeling of the three-dimensional rotational dynamics of rigid bodies and of the use of Euler parameters to eliminate the singularities occasioned by the use of Euler angles in such modeling. The document goes on to characterize a Hamiltonian model, developed by the authors, that utilizes the Euler parameters and, hence, is suitable for use in computational simulations that involve arbitrary rotational motion. In this formulation unlike in prior Euler-parameter-based formulations, there are no algebraic constraints. This formulation includes a general potential energy function, incorporates a minimum set of momentum variables, and takes an explicit state-space form convenient for numerical implementation. Practical application of this formulation has been demonstrated by the development of a new and simplified model of the rotational motion of a rigid rotor to which is attached a partially filled mercury ring damper. Models like this one are used in guidance and control of spin-stabilized spacecraft and gyroscope-stabilized seekers in guided missiles.

Demonstrating the Effect of Particle Impact Dampers on the Random Vibration Response and Fatigue Life of Printed Wiring Assemblies

In a recent experimental study, small Particle Impact Dampers (PID) were bonded directly to the surface of printed circuit board (PCB) or printed wiring assemblies (PWA), reducing the random vibration response and increasing the fatigue life. This study provides data verifying practicality of this approach. The measured peak strain and acceleration response of the fundamental out of plane bending mode was significantly attenuated by adding a PID device. Attenuation of this mode is most relevant to the fatigue life of a PWA because the local relative displacements between the board and the supported components, which ultimately cause fatigue failures of the electrical leads of the board-mounted components are dominated by this mode. Applying PID damping at the board-level of assembly provides mitigation with a very small mass impact, especially as compared to isolation at an avionics box or shelf level of assembly. When compared with other mitigation techniques at the PWA level (board thickness, stiffeners, constrained layer damping), a compact PID device has the additional advantage of not needing to be an integral part of the design. A PID can simply be bonded to heritage or commercial off the shelf (COTS) hardware to facilitate its use in environments beyond which it was originally qualified. Finite element analysis and test results show that the beneficial effect is not localized and that the attenuation is not due to the simple addition of mass. No significant, detrimental reduction in frequency was observed. Side-by-side life testing of damped and un-damped boards at two different thicknesses (0.070" and 0.090") has shown that the addition of a PID was much more significant to the fatigue life than increasing the thickness. High speed video, accelerometer, and strain measurements have been collected to correlate with analytical results.

Self-Tuning Tunable Mass Dampers

A tunable mass damper incorporates a frame and a voice coil supported in the frame. A magnet concentric with the voice coil is movable relative to the housing via the voice coil. A plurality of flexures having a first end extending from the magnet and an arm releasably coupled to the frame are adjustable to an effective length for a desired frequency of reciprocation of the magnet.
