A variable-data-rate, multimode quadriphase modem.

This paper describes the design and performance of a highly versatile modulator and demodulator recently developed to facilitate the evaluation of various digital communications links. The modem is capable of either PSK or QPSK operation and can accommodate a very wide range of continuously tunable data rates (1 kbps to 30 Mbps in each of two channels). In the QPSK mode, operation is possible using either a single serial data stream (single channel operation) or using two mutually independent, unrelated, and asynchronous data streams (dual-channel operation). Integrate and dump detectors are used at the demodulator for regeneration of the data stream(s). Measurements indicate that the performance of the overall system (including the bit detectors) is within 2 dB of the theoretically optimum performance of either PSK or QPSK at any rate within the range of rates provided by the modem, and is within 1 dB of theoretical over most of the range of rates.

Optimal space communications techniques

The design, development, and analysis are reported of a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) for FM demodulation and threshold extension. One of the features of the developed DPLL is its synchronous, real time operation. The sampling frequency is constant and all the required arithmetic and logic operations are performed within one sampling period, generating an output sequence which is converted to analog form and filtered. An equation relating the sampling frequency to the carrier frequency must be satisfied to guarantee proper DPLL operation. The synchronous operation enables a time-shared operation of one DPLL to demodulate several FM signals simultaneously. In order to obtain information about the DPLL performance at low input signal-to-noise ratios, a model of an input noise spike was introduced, and the DPLL equation was solved using a digital computer. The spike model was successful in finding a second order DPLL which yielded a five db threshold extension beyond that of a first order DPLL.

Simulation and modeling of the deep space receiver interaction with channel decoding performance

Computer models were developed in an attempt to reproduce the sequential decoder computation curve of Deep Space Network (DSN) ground station receivers, by simulation of the binary data output of the Gaussian channel with the carrier phaselock loop and the subcarrier demodulator assembly. Simulations were run at bit rates equal to the powers of 2 from 8 to 2,048, and agreement with DSN data was generally good above 32 bits per second. Simulation results at data rates of 8, 16, and 32 bits per second did not closely match experimental data. This simulation provides a more accurate prediction of DSN computation lengths than either current mathematical models or simulations without both the subcarrier demodulator and carrier loop.

Discrete estimation of continuous angle-modulated signals over multipath channels for aeronautical communication

The multipath channel for communication between an aerospace vehicle and a ground terminal is modeled by a multiplicative first-order Markov process. The multiplicative process is treated as a component of the message model and the discrete-time demodulation algorithms using the extended Kalman nonlinear estimation technique are developed for continuous-time angle-modulated signals. The equivalent baseband form of the demodulator structure is derived. Two examples of the message process are discussed for an FM system. The simulation results are presented for various values of the bandwidth expansion ratio and the additive SNR. The performance of the baseband algorithms is discussed.

Shuttle Ku-band signal design study

Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed.

Closed Loop solar array-ion thruster system with power control circuitry

A power control circuit connected between a solar array and an ion thruster receives voltage and current signals from the solar array. The control circuit multiplies the voltage and current signals together to produce a power signal which is differentiated with respect to time. The differentiator output is detected by a zero crossing detector and, after suitable shaping, the detector output is phase compared with a clock in a phase demodulator. An integrator receives no output from the phase demodulator when the operating point is at the maximum power but is driven toward the maximum power point for non-optimum operation. A ramp generator provides minor variations in the beam current reference signal produced by the integrator in order to obtain the first derivative of power.

A generalization of binary minimum shift keying and staggered quadriphase shift keying modulation

A generalized modulation scheme, which includes minimum shift keying (MSK) and staggered quadriphase shift keying (SQPSK) as special cases, is analyzed. The general modulator is realized as a one-input, two-output sequence transducer whose outputs select the carrier signal for each band. This form of the modulator has the practical advantage of not requiring any RF filtering since there is no actual mixing of the carriers with the modulating signals. It is shown that the optimum demodulator (whether hard-decision or soft-decision) always can make its decisions from the received waveform over two bands when the interference is additive white Gaussian noise, thus generalizing a well-known result for hard decision demodulation of MSK and SQPSK signals. The power spectra of MSK and SQPSK signals are derived to isolate the role played by coherency between the modulating signals and the carriers.

False lock performance of quadriphase receivers

Quadriphase receivers, like biphase receivers, have the ability to false lock on a sideband on the data modulation. The theory associated with this phenomenon for receivers of binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK), using Costas loop demodulation, has recently been documented in the literature. This paper considers the corresponding theory for receivers of balanced quadriphase-shift-keying (QPSK) employing a quadriphase Costas loop (or equivalent fourth-power loop) for demodulation. Specific closed form expressions for false lock performance are developed and numerically evaluated for the particular case of single pole arm filters and an NRZ data format for each of the two statistically independent quadrature modulations.

Self-calibrating threshold detector

A self calibrating threshold detector comprises a single demodulating channel which includes a mixer having one input receiving the incoming signal and another input receiving a local replica code. During a short time interval, an incorrect local code is applied to the mixer to incorrectly demodulate the incoming signal and to provide a reference level that calibrates the noise propagating through the channel. A sample and hold circuit is coupled to the channel for storing a sample of the reference level. During a relatively long time interval, the correct replica code provides an output level which ranges between the reference level and a maximum level that represents incoming signal presence and synchronism with the replica code. A summer substracts the stored sample reference from the output level to provide a resultant difference signal indicative of the acquisition of the expected signal.

Pulsed Phase Shifter Improves Doppler Radar

Ability of microwave Doppler radar to measure velocity of slow moving nearby target is enhanced by pulsed 90 degrees phase shifter in radar transmission line between circulator and antenna. Because of phase shifting, Doppler frequency is detected as modulation on carrier instead of baseband signal. Carrier is amplified and filtered before demodulation, resulting in strong, clean demodulated Doppler for measurement and display.

Modulation/demodulation techniques for satellite communications. Part 4: Appendices

The use of the Viterbi algorithm in a general context is examined. The generalized transfer function bounds are given which permit the following applications to be carried out: maximum likelihood demodulation of such bandwidth modulations as minimum-shift-keying and continuous phase frequency-shift-keying, demodulation of intersymbol interference and partial response signals, estimation and smoothing, and simultaneous phase synchronization, and data detection. Sufficient conditions are reviewed for tightening Chernoff and Rhattacharyya bounds.

Sideband-aided receiver arraying

Efforts to increase the amount of data that can be received from outer planet missions by coherently combining signals from ground antennas in such a way as to increase the total effective aperture of the receiving system are discussed. As these signals become weaker, the baseband arraying technique in current use degrades somewhat due to carrier jitter. One solution to this problem is Sideband-Aided Receiver Arraying (SARA). In SARA, sidebands demodulated to baseband in a master receiver at the largest antenna are used to allow slave receivers in the other antennas to track the sideband power in the signal rather than the carrier power. The already existing receivers can be used in the slaves to track and demodulate the signals in either a residual carrier or a suppressed carrier environment. The resultant baseband signals from all the antennas can then be combined using existing baseband combining equiment. Computer simulations of SARA show increases in throughput (measured in data bits per second) over baseband-only combining 17 percent at Voyager 2 Uranum encounter and 31 percent at Neptune for a four-element antenna array and (7, 1/2) convolutional coding.

An efficient sampling technique for sums of bandpass functions

A well known sampling theorem states that a bandlimited function can be completely determined by its values at a uniformly placed set of points whose density is at least twice the highest frequency component of the function (Nyquist rate). A less familiar but important sampling theorem states that a bandlimited narrowband function can be completely determined by its values at a properly chosen, nonuniformly placed set of points whose density is at least twice the passband width. This allows for efficient digital demodulation of narrowband signals, which are common in sonar, radar and radio interferometry, without the side effect of signal group delay from an analog demodulator. This theorem was extended by developing a technique which allows a finite sum of bandlimited narrowband functions to be determined by its values at a properly chosen, nonuniformly placed set of points whose density can be made arbitrarily close to the sum of the passband widths.

A novel algorithm for sea surface height estimation using complex SAR data

A method of extracting sea height information from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) complex data was studied. A fundamental SAR ocean imaging model for gravity waves showed that information about the long wave is present in the SAR complex data, especially its phase. Phase demodulation algorithm followed by linear regression and filtering was employed. Only the latter two steps incorporated a priori information that might be available. A relatively simplified simulation indicated that the finite bandwidth of the SAR system imposed the apparently most serious limitation. A preliminary application to SEASAT-SAR complex imagery was encouraging. Information about the long wave, if incorporated into a more sophisticated phase demodulation structure, i.e., at an earlier point in the algorithm, could conceivably mitigate this bandwidth limitation.

A proposed technique for the Venus balloon telemetry and Doppler frequency recovery

A technique is proposed to accurately estimate the Doppler frequency and demodulate the digitally encoded telemetry signal that contains the measurements from balloon instruments. Since the data are prerecorded, one can take advantage of noncausal estimators that are both simpler and more computationally efficient than the usual closed-loop or real-time estimators for signal detection and carrier tracking. Algorithms for carrier frequency estimation subcarrier demodulation, bit and frame synchronization are described. A Viterbi decoder algorithm using a branch indexing technique has been devised to decode constraint length 6, rate 1/2 convolutional code that is being used by the balloon transmitter. These algorithms are memory efficient and can be implemented on microcomputer systems.

Viterbi decoding for the resulting quantized channel is discussed.
