Residential Energy Efficiency Design Guide for Tribal Lands

Homeowners and renters on tribal lands have historically faced a disproportionate energy burden compared to the United States as a whole. The Indian Health Service (IHS), which serves these communities, strives to meet aggressive energy performance goals when constructing their residential housing. Challenges common in rural locations can hinder progress toward those goals, such as availability of materials, access to specialized labor, and budget constraints. This guide is for architects and builders who aim to incorporate energy efficiency (EE) into their residential designs. This report presents commercially viable energy efficiency packages for a variety of locations and home inputs to help guide home builders in choosing improvements for energy performance. The intention is to provide a diverse set of packages that can be used during the design phase to achieve energy savings compared to a code minimum building design. By presenting a set of diverse options with similar expected energy savings and life-cycle costs, final decisions can be left up to the building designers who can better determine the appropriate package given local costs, materials, and labor availability. Although this guide was developed for IHS projects, it can be used to help designers and construction professionals better make cost-effective choices when a detailed, project-specific building energy analysis is not possible.

qSIEVE: Efficient qLDPC Memory via Systolic Movement in Atom Arrays

As quantum machines have scaled up in their number of qubits, significant research has turned towards increasing their fidelity with quantum error correction codes. Although promising results have been shown with the surface code, which only requires near-neighbor connections between qubits, the high qubit overhead of such local codes promises to be problematic. Consequently, recent work has explored non-local quantum LDPC (qLDPC) codes, which have good asymptotic encoding rates. Despite theoretical progress, hardware implementations of these codes have been a longstanding challenge. At the experimental level, demonstrations of movement based communication on atom arrays suggest this is a powerful new primitive to achieve non-local connectivity. Leveraging this, we present a protocol for implementing non-local qLDPC codes in hardware. Our protocol, qSIEVE, is a co-design of such codes with movement in atom arrays. qSIEVE defines a restricted family of qLDPC codes that can be implemented efficiently with systolic movement. We then quantify the utility of qSIEVE in the context of a complete fault tolerant architecture. We compare the cost of implementing benchmark programs in a standard, surface code only architecture and a mixed architecture where data is stored in qLDPC memory with qSIEVE and loaded to surface codes for computation.

Initial development and verification of a primary load design method based on elastic-perfectly plastic analysis

This report describes a new primary load design method to supplement the current design-by-elastic-analysis rules in Section III, Division 5, Subsection HB, Subpart B of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, covering the design and construction of Class A high temperature nuclear structural components. The main objectives for the new design method are to provide a procedure that can be applied to components with complicated geometries and to simplify the primary load design process by providing rules more compatible with modern finite element analysis. The report includes a complete set of design rules, presented as a draft ASME Code Case, as well as a commentary on the rules and a set of verification problems. The verification design problems demonstrate the new primary load design rules produce safe, efficient components when compared to the current Division 5 approach, while greatly simplifying the design analysis process.

Comprehensive framework for data-driven model form discovery of the closure laws in thermal-hydraulics codes

The two-phase two-fluid model is a basis of many thermal-hydraulics codes used in design, licensing, and safety considerations of nuclear power plants. Thermal-hydraulics codes rely on the closure laws to close the system of conservation equations and describe the interactions between phases. These laws, derived from years of experimental investigations, are semi-empirical correlations that lack generality and have a limited range of applicability. Increase of computational power, availability of new experiments, and development of high-fidelity simulations has increased the number of validation data. The discrepancies between the code predictions and the validation data are a great source of knowledge. Missing physics that are not included in the model but are important for the considered phenomena can be discovered by propagating the information from the experimental results through the model. Furthermore, physics-discovered data-driven model form (P3DM) methodology integrates available integral effect tests and separate effects tests to determine the necessary corrections to the model form of the closure laws. In contrast to existing calibration techniques, the methodology modifies the functional form of the closure laws. Based on the functional form of the correction, the missing physics that were not included in the original model can be discovered. The methodology provides the alternative to the machine learning approach, in which the model is discovered in the form of the intractable black-box relation. In this work, the methodology was applied to the CTF subchannel code to improve the prediction of the two-phase flow phenomena.
