Deep learning with plasma plume image sequences for anomaly detection and prediction of growth kinetics during pulsed laser deposition

Abstract Materials synthesis platforms that are designed for autonomous experimentation are capable of collecting multimodal diagnostic data that can be utilized for feedback to optimize material properties. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is emerging as a viable autonomous synthesis tool, and so the need arises to develop machine learning (ML) techniques that are capable of extracting information from in situ diagnostics. Here, we demonstrate that intensified-CCD image sequences of the plasma plume generated during PLD can be used for anomaly detection and the prediction of thin film growth kinetics. We develop multi-output (2 + 1)D convolutional neural network regression models that extract deep features from plume dynamics that not only correlate with the measured chamber pressure and incident laser energy, but more importantly, predict parameters of an auto-catalytic film growth model derived from in situ laser reflectivity experiments. Our results demonstrate how ML with in situ plume diagnostics data in PLD can be utilized to maintain deposition conditions in an optimal regime. Further, the predictive capabilities of plume dynamics on the kinetics of film growth or other film properties prior to deposition provides a means for rapid pre-screening of growth conditions for the non-expert, which promises to accelerate materials optimization with PLD.

A small solar electric ion propulsion spacecraft for lunar science

A lightweight spacecraft design concept has been developed which employs solar-electric ion propulsion to conduct a lunar science mission. The design relies on off-the-shelf technology to achieve high reliability and near-term launch readiness status. Overall project costs are kept to a minimum through the concentration of mission objectives, as well as through the minimization of payload launch costs by resort to the Space Shuttle's Get-Away Special canister. Attention is given to the spacecraft's instrumentation configuration.

Machine learning for improved current-density reconstruction from two-dimensional vector magnetic images

The reconstruction of electrical current densities from magnetic field measurements is an important technique with applications in materials science, circuit design, quality control, plasma physics, and biology. Analytic reconstruction methods exist for planar currents, but break down in the presence of high-spatial-frequency noise or large standoff distance, restricting the types of systems that can be studied. Here, we demonstrate the use of a deep convolutional neural network for current density reconstruction from two-dimensional images of vector magnetic fields acquired by a quantum diamond microscope . Trained network performance significantly exceeds analytic reconstruction for data with high noise or large standoff distances. This machine learning technique can perform quality inversions on lower-signal-to-noise-ratio data, significantly reducing the data collection time and permitting reconstructions of weaker and three-dimensional current sources. EcoBOT: an AI/ML enabled automated phenotyping capability for model plants

Introduction: Advances in automation and AI/ML offer new opportunities for plant science, including design, modeling, and analysis. This study aimed to develop an automated platform for researching small model plants under axenic conditions and integrate it with AI/ML tools. Methods: The EcoBOT platform was developed, which consists of sterile containers (EcoFABs) for growing plants and imaging for monitoring plant growth and health. Brachypodium distachyon was grown on the EcoBOT, and its response to nutrient limitation and copper stress was evaluated. Results: The results showed that Brachypodium distachyon grown in the EcoBOT maintained sterility and responded to nutrient limitation and copper stress. Analysis of over 6,500 root and shoot images revealed varying sensitivity and response rates to copper. Bayesian Optimization was used to improve model accuracies relating copper concentrations to plant biomass via sequential experiments, resulting in a >30% improvement. Discussion: The findings of this study demonstrate the potential of the EcoBOT platform for researching plant responses to environmental factors. Future experiments could focus on relating other chemical stresses and microbial interactions to create generalized models of plant responses.

Human factors in Spacelab - Crew training

At NASA-Ames Research Center's Life Sciences Flight Experiments Project Office two payloads for the Shuttle Spacelab are currently in development. The first payload, Spacelab-3, will launch in November 1984. Unique life sciences hardware designed to support animals in 0-g will fly for the first time. Flight crew training sessions for the Spacelab-3 astronauts began in June 1982. Human factors involvement is extensive. A thorough understanding of both the 1-g and 0-g environments is necessary. The weightlessness of the space environment creates special conditions; e.g., the time required for a 1-g laboratory experiment significantly increases in 0-g. The transportation of objects in 0-g uses different techniques than on earth. These considerations, plus others, are incorporated into the design of the Spacelab-3 crew training program.

TOPEX/POSEIDON joint verification plan

TOPEX/POSEIDON is a satellite mission that will use altimetry to make precise measurements of sea level with the primary goal of studying global ocean circulation. The mission is jointly conducted by the United States' National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the French space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). The current plans call for a launch of the satellite in August 1992. The primary mission will last 3 years, and provisions were made to extend the mission for an additional 2 years. The mission was coordinated with a number of international oceanographic and meteorological programs, including the World Ocean Circulation Experiment and the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere Program, both of which are sponsored by the World Climate Research Program. The observations of TOPEX/POSEIDON are timed to provide a global perspective for interpreting the in situ measurements collected by these programs and in turn will be combined with observations of other satellites to achieve a global, four-dimensional description of the circulation of the world's oceans. In the autumn of 1987, an international team of 38 Principal Investigators was selected to participate in the mission. These scientists have been working closely with the TOPEX/POSEIDON Project to refine the mission design and science plans. During the first 6 months after launch, a number of these investigators will join with the project to conduct a wide range of oceanographic and geophysical investigations using the TOPEX/POSEIDON data. The purpose of these investigations is to demonstrate the scientific utility of the mission to the international scientific community.

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment

The growth of dendrites is one of the commonly observed forms of solidification encountered when metals and alloys freeze under low thermal gradients, as occurs in most casting and welding processes. In engineering alloys, the details of the dendritic morphology directly relates to important material responses and properties. Of more generic interest, dendritic growth is also an archetypical problem in morphogenesis, where a complex pattern evolves from simple starting conditions. Thus, the physical understanding and mathematical description of how dendritic patterns emerge during the growth process are of interest to both scientists and engineers. The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a basic science experiment designed to measure, for a fundamental test of theory, the kinetics and morphology of dendritic growth without complications induced by gravity-driven convection. The IDGE, a collaboration between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy NY, and NASA's Lewis Research Center (LeRC) was developed over a ten year period from a ground-based research program into a space flight experiment. Important to the success of this flight experiment was provision of in situ near-real-time teleoperations during the spaceflight experiment.
