Space Power Management and Distribution Status and Trends

An overview of space power management and distribution (PMAD) is provided which encompasses historical and current technology trends. The PMAD components discussed include power source control, energy storage control, and load power processing electronic equipment. The status of distribution equipment comprised of rotary joints and power switchgear is evaluated based on power level trends in the public, military, and commercial sectors. Component level technology thrusts, as driven by perceived system level trends, are compared to technology status of piece-parts such as power semiconductors, capacitors, and magnetics to determine critical barriers.

NASA's approach to the commercial use of space

NASA planning activities in the area of commercial development of space resources are reviewed. Examples of specific types of commercial space ventures are given, according to three different categories: new commercial high-technology ventures; new commercial application of existing space technology, and commercial ventures resulting from the transfer of existing space programs to the private sector. Basic objectives for reducing technical, financial and institutional risks for commercial space operations are considered. Attention is given to the cooperative working environment encouraged by Joint Endeavor Agreements (JEAs) and Technical Exchange Agreements (TEAs) between industrial organizations in the development of space systems. Benefits of the commercial development of space resources include the production of purer pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cancers, kidney diseases, and diabetes; and the development of ultra-pure semiconductor crystals for use in next generation electronic equipment.

Estimate of the probability of a lightning strike to the Galileo probe

Lightning strikes to aerospace vehicles occur mainly in or near clouds. As the Galileo entry probe will pass most of its operational life in the clouds of Jupiter, which is known to have lightning activity, the present study is concerned with the risk of a lightning strike to the probe. A strike to the probe could cause physical damage to the structure and/or damage to the electronic equipment aboard the probe. It is thought to be possible, for instance, that the instrument failures which occurred on all four Pioneer Venus entry probes at an altitude of 12 km were due to an external electric discharge. The probability of a lightning strike to the Galileo probe is evaluated. It is found that the estimate of a strike to the probe is only 0.001, which is about the same as the expected failure rate due to other design factors. In the case of entry probes to cloud-covered planets, a consideration of measures for protecting the vehicle and its payload from lightning appears to be appropriate.

Flex Circuitry for Confined Spaces

To facilitate installation of electronic equipment in confined spaces, circuitry preassembled on flexible wiring. Mother boards, large bypass capacitors, and interface connectors mounted on flexible wiring and tested before installation. Flexible circuits eliminate need for in-place hardwiring and allow smaller enclosures to be used.

Power requirements for commercial communications spacecraft

Historical data on commercial spacecraft power systems are presented and their power requirements to the growth of satellite communications channel usage are related. Some approaches for estimating future power requirements of this class of spacecraft through the year 2000 are proposed. The key technology drivers in satellite power systems are addressed. Several technological trends in such systems are described, focusing on the most useful areas for research and development of major subsystems, including solar arrays, energy storage, and power electronics equipment.

Reactor power system/spacecraft integration

The new national initiative in space reactor technology evaluation and development is strongly tied to mission applications and to spacecraft and space transportation system (STS) compatibility. This paper discusses the power system integration interfaces with potential using spacecraft and the STS, and the impact of these requirements on the design. The integration areas of interest are mechanical, thermal, electrical, attitude control, and mission environments. The mission environments include space vacuum, solar input, heat sink, space radiation, weapons effects, and reactor power system radiation environments. The natural, reactor, and weapons effects radiation must be evaluated and combined to define the design requirements for spacecraft electronic equipment.

Development of an emulation-simulation thermal control model for space station application

An improved capability for comparing various techniques for thermal management in the Space Station was developed. Current planning for the orbiting space station calls for a dual keel configuration. The thermal control system (TCS) for the space is composed of a central TCS and internal thermal control systems for the modules, as well as service facilities and attached payloads. The internal TCS may be attacted to the central TCS through a thermal bus. The central TCS is composed of a main transport system which collects waste thermal energy from each of the modules and transports it through coolant lines to the main rejection system. The waste heat loads in the modules arise from electrical and electronic equipment as well as metabolic loads in the manned modules. Several candidate technologies are being considered for acquiring the waste heat loads, for transporting the thermal energy between the acquisition and rejection systems, and for rejecting the waste heat to space. The analysis techniques described were developed for use in evaluating reliability, weights, costs, volumes, and power requirements for configurations using different candidates and different mission parameters.

Heat Exchanger For Rotating Modular Structures

Heat exchanger transfers heat from one structure to another while accommodating rotary motion of structures. Flat-panel heat exchanger passes heat from fluid in middle panel to fluid in outer panels. Diaphragm-like outer panels swell to conform to surfaces of middle panel, ensuring thermal contact. Rotary fluid coupling provides connection for both supply fluid and return fluid. Flexible hoses carrying fluid to and from coupling accommodate tilt of one structure with respect to other. Adapted to transfer of fluids and heat across joints of machine tools and robot arms and to flow of coolant through portable electronic equipment.

Fire extinguishment and inhibition in spacecraft environments

It was concluded that it is essential that NASA develop a comprehensive approach to fire extinguishment and inerting in spacecraft environments. Electronic equipment might be easily protected through use of an onboard inert gas generating system. The use of Halon 1301 presents serious technological challenges for agent cleanup and removal of the toxic and corrosive products of combustion. Nitrogen pressurization, while effective, probably presents a serious weight penality. The use of liquid water sprays appears to be the most effective approach to general purpose spacecraft fire protection.
