Front-end engineering design (FEED) studies: a quantitative analysis

NETL has devised a methodology for normalizing FEED study metrics of interest and allowing cautious quantitative comparison across FEED studies. This presentation introduces the novel quantitative comparison methodology and presents results from utilizing this methodology to examine data presented in recent FEED study reports. The quantitative methodology developed for the examination of FEED study performance and cost also allows comparison of real-world performance and costs against NETL TEA model predicted performance and cost. Learnings from examining NETL model predicted performance and cost versus real world reported values are highlighted. These learnings provide insight into NETL TEA model uncertainty and highlight opportunities for further model development.

THE ENGINEERING DESIGN OF THE ORBITING ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY

The Orbiting Astronomical Observatory (OAO) is designed to provide an accurately stabilized, unmanned platform for astronomical observations from well above the earth's atmosphere. Of primary immediate interest is the observation of stellar radiation in the ultraviolet range, which is severely limited even in balloon experiments because of absorption in the ozone layers. The OAO is a 3600-pound spacecraft that will be placed in orbit by an Atlas Agena D. It can handle optical systems up to 48 inches in diameter, 10 feet in length, weighing 1000 pounds. The key design requirements of the spacecraft are discussed. The reasons behind the configuration are then explained, followed by a discussion of the major subsystems showing how they have been designed to meet the exacting requirements astronomical observation.

New model performance index for engineering design of control systems

Performance index includes a model representing linear control-system design specifications. Based on a geometric criterion for approximation of the model by the actual system, the index can be interpreted directly in terms of the desired system response model without actually having the model's time response.

Engineering design manual of parachute decelerator characteristics for space shuttle solid rocket booster recovery

The design criteria and characteristics of parachutes for recovery of the solid rocket boosters used with the space shuttle launch are presented. A computer program for analyzing the requirements of the parachute decelerators is described. The computer inputs for both the drogue and main parachute decelerators are; (1) parachute size, (2) deployment conditions, (3) inflation times, (4) reefing times, (5) mass properties, (6) spring properties, and (7) aerodynamic coefficients. Graphs of the parachute performance are included.

Engineering design, stress and thermal analysis, and documentation for SATS program

An in-depth analysis and mechanical design of the solar array stowage and deployment arrangements for use in Small Applications Technology Satellite spacecraft is presented. Alternate approaches for the major elements of work are developed and evaluated. Elements include array stowage and deployment arrangements, the spacecraft and array behavior in the spacecraft despin mode, and the design of the main hinge and segment hinge assemblies. Feasibility calculations are performed and the preferred approach is identified.
