Evaluation of Ceramic Foams and Simulated Reentry Environments

NASA and Ames is conducting ongoing research in lower density reusable TPS material for future reentry vehicles. Ceramic foams from pre ceramic polymer routes have potential for use in both acreage TPS and as tile leading edges for reentry vehicles. One of the key factors to investigate, when developing new materials for reentry applications, is their oxidation behavior in the appropriate reentry environment whrch can be simulated using ground based arc jet (plasma jet) testing. Studies have shown that oxidation rates of materials will differ when exposed to either monatomatic or molecular oxygen and the amount of monoatomic oxygen depends on the conditions particular to a given test situation. Monoatomic oxygen is always present in reentry environment, therefore arc jet testing is required to provide the appropriate conditions (stagnation pressures, heat fluxes, enthalpies, heat loads and atmospheres) encountered during flight. This preliminary work looks at the response of ceramic foams (Si systems) exposed to simulated reentry environments and investigates the influence of microstructure and composition on the materials response.

Sixty Earth-Days Test of a Prototype Pt/HTCC Alumina Package in Simulated Venus Environment

This paper presents experimental results of a prototype high temperature co-fired ceramic (HTCC) package with Au/Pt metallization in a three-phase harsh environment test that culminated with 60-day demonstration in simulated Venus surface environment of 465 degC with corrosive atmosphere at 90 bar pressure. The prototype package is based on previously developed and reported HTCC package successfully tested with multiple analog and digital silicon carbide (SiC) high temperatures semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) at NASA Glenn Research Center in 500 degC Earth air ambient for over ten thousands hours, and short-term tested at temperatures above 800 degC. The three-phase harsh environment test started with 48 hours in 465 degC Earth air, followed by 48 hours in 465 degC nitrogen at 90 bar pressure and 1400 hours in simulated Venus surface environment of 465 degC with corrosive atmosphere at 90 bar. Initial analytical results of the package materials and surfaces after exposure to Venus environment are discussed to assess the stability of the packaging materials in the tested environments. The test in simulated Venus environment was implemented in the NASA Glenn Extreme Environment Rig (GEER). The results of this study suggest that an effective encapsulation of areas of surface metallization and vicinities may help to improve electrical performance of a HTCC alumina packaging system in Venus environment.

Oxygen cost during exercise in simulated subgravity environments

Oxygen cost (VO2) and heart rate (HR) were determined during treadmill walking in simulated subgravity environments. The long axis of the subject's body was suspended parallel to the floor in a slow rotation room with feet aligned on the surface of a treadmill mounted 90 deg on the wall. Without rotation, the subjects were virtually weightless against the treadmill; with centrifugation, environments of 0.25, 0.5 and 1 G were simulated. Oxygen cost (open circuit) and HR (ECG) were measured during the 5th minute of walking at 3.2, 4.7 and 6.1 km/h. Similar measurements were also determined during walking at 1/2-G using the inclined plane technique. Oxygen cost per unit mass and HR were significantly reduced in all subgravity environments. However, net oxygen cost per unit weight carried and, therefore, mechanical efficiency was found to be independent of gravity. This supports the idea that the most probable cause for the decreased oxygen cost with reduced gravity is less body weight carried.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego User Manual - Version 4.56

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.
