Self-excitation of auroral arcs in a three-dimensionally coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere system

This paper presents the first full three-dimensional dynamic simulation of auroral arc formation. The magnetospheric and ionospheric dynamics are represented by one-fluid magnetohydrodynamic equations and two-fluid weakly ionized plasma equations, respectively. The feedback coupling between magnetospheric Alfven waves and ionospheric density waves results in a spontaneous generation of longitudinally elongated striations of field-aligned currents and ionospheric electron densities, which compare very well with many features of quiet auroral arcs.

Transforming Aeration Energy in Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) through Suboxic Nitrogen Removal (Final Report)

The objective of this project was to advance two key technological components—aeration control strategies and process design methodologies—to support the development and broader adoption of suboxic biological nitrogen removal (SBNR). The project focused on achieving the following three goals: • Enhance Model Predictive Control (MPC) Technology: Advance the DO/Nmaster MPC platform from its initial 2018 pilot deployment at the Chico Water Resource Recovery Facility in California to full-scale integration. This included partnering with a blower technology commercialization partner and incorporating machine learning (ML) capabilities to enable nationwide deployment. • Bridge Knowledge Gaps in SBNR Process Design: Address fundamental gaps in SBNR process understanding through controlled pilot-scale testing at a dedicated pilot facility. These efforts supported the development of robust kinetic models to inform reliable SBNR control, operational strategies, and design frameworks. • Demonstrate Full-Scale Implementation of Low DO/SBNR with ML: Transition low dissolved oxygen (DO)/SBNR coupled with ML from pilot-scale trials to full-scale demonstration in flow-through biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems, with the goal of enabling scalable, nationwide adoption in activated sludge treatment processes. The project included demonstration of SBNR at the pilot scale as performed by Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) and at the full-scale as performed by the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts' (LACSD) Pomona Water Reclamation Plant (POWRP).

Destabilization of binary mixing layer in supercritical conditions

Compressible mixing layer instabilities are of importance to a wide range of environmental and industrial applications. Past studies have focused on either ideal-gas or real-fluid thermodynamic regimes of single-species mixing layers. However, mixing layers of binary mixtures at supercritical conditions, commonly encountered in fuel injection systems, introduce additional complexities due to the added compositional degree-of-freedom. Moreover, the effect of strong variations in thermodynamic response functions across the Widom line on the binary mixing layer stability remains poorly understood. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the coupling between the hydrodynamic instability and the real-fluid thermodynamics across the Widom line and its effects on the overall binary mixing layer dynamics. To this end, we develop a linear stability analysis of the full binary-species compressible transport equations coupled with the PC-SAFT equation of state. Analysis shows the existence of a novel instability mechanism that arises from juxtapositioning of the Widom-line transition and the hydrodynamic inflection point. This novel thermodynamically induced instability mechanism has the net effect of destabilizing the binary mixing layer at lowering supercritical conditions towards the critical pressure point. This is in contrast to previous stability analyses of supercritical single-species mixing layers, where increasing pressure destabilizes the flow due to its effect on reducing the density stratification. The discovered thermodynamically induced instability mechanism of binary mixing flows highlights the need for an extension of classical instability criteria to incorporate the effect of strong variations in the thermodynamic response functions across the Widom line on mixing layer instability.

Cosmological gravitational particle production of massive spin-2 particles

The phenomenon of cosmological gravitational particle production (CGPP) is expected to occur during the period of inflation and the transition into a hot big bang cosmology. Particles may be produced even if they only couple directly to gravity, and so CGPP provides a natural explanation for the origin of dark matter. In this work we study the gravitational production of massive spin-2 particles assuming two different couplings to matter. We evaluate the full system of mode equations, including the helicity-0 modes, and by solving them numerically we calculate the spectrum and abundance of massive spin-2 particles that results from inflation on a hilltop potential. We conclude that CGPP might provide a viable mechanism for the generation of massive spin-2 particle dark matter during inflation, and we identify the favorable region of parameter space in terms of the spin-2 particle’s mass and the reheating temperature. As a secondary product of our work, we identify the conditions under which such theories admit ghost or gradient instabilities, and we thereby derive a generalization of the Higuchi bound to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetimes.

Precision cosmological constraints on atomic dark matter

Abstract Atomic dark matter is a simple but highly theoretically motivated possibility for an interacting dark sector that could constitute some or all of dark matter. We perform a comprehensive study of precision cosmological observables on minimal atomic dark matter, exploring for the first time the full parameter space of dark QED coupling and dark electron and proton masses (α D ,$$ {m}_{e_D} $$ m e D ,$$ {m}_{p_D} $$ m p D ) as well as the two cosmological parameters of aDM mass fractionf D and temperature ratioξat time of SM recombination. We also show how aDM can accommodate the (H 0 , S 8 ) tension from late-time measurements, leading to a better fit than ΛCDM or ΛCDM + dark radiation. Furthermore, including late-time measurements leads to closed contours of preferredξand dark hydrogen binding energy. The dark proton mass is seemingly unconstrained. Our results serve as an important new jumping-off point for future precision studies of atomic dark matter at non-linear and smaller scales.

Improved MPACT energy deposition and explicit heat generation coupling with CTF

The CASL neutronics code MPACT assumes local energy deposition with equilibrium delayed energy for steady-state and transient calculations. These approximations limit the accurate representation of the heat generation in space and its variations over time, both of which are essential for power distribution and thermal–hydraulic coupling analyses. This paper presents an explicit energy deposition model considering the neutron and gamma heating of all regions and the time-dependent delayed energy. The MPACT/CTF interfaces are updated to transfer the explicit heat sources. The new model agrees well with MCNP for problems without thermal–hydraulic feedback. The MPACT/CTF coupled calculation for a hot-full-power quarter-core case using the new model exhibits a reduction of peak pin power by 2.3% and fuel centerline temperature by 17 K. The new model also shows a keff difference up to -100 pcm in depletion and a 30 K peak fuel temperature reduction in a reactivity-initiated-accident problem.

Slow spin relaxation in single endohedral fullerene molecules

Well-protected magnetization, tunable quantum states, and long spin-relaxation time are desired for the use of magnetic molecules in spintronics and quantum information technologies. In this work, endohedral fullerene molecules M@C 28 with different transition-metal cores were explored through systematic first-principles calculations and spin dynamics analyses. Many of them have bias-tunable structure, stable magnetization, and sizable magnetic anisotropy energy. Furthermore, some of them may have spin-relaxation time up to several milliseconds for their quantum spin states at high temperature (~10 K) after full consideration of spin-vibration couplings. In conclusion, our results suggest that these M@C 28 provide a rich pool of single-molecule magnets for diverse applications.

Extended Search for the Invisible Axion with the Axion Dark Matter Experiment

This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range 2.81–3.31 µeV . This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first-stage signal amplifier.

Incorporating Elevation in Traffic-Vehicle CO-Simulation: Issues, Impacts, and Solutions

Traffic-vehicle co-simulation couples microscopic traffic simulation with full-body vehicle dynamics to assess system-level impacts on mobility, energy, and safety with greater realism. Incorporating elevation is critical for accurately modeling vehicle behavior and energy use, especially for gradient-sensitive vehicles such as electric and heavy-duty trucks. However, raw elevation data often contain noise, discontinuities, and inconsistencies. While such issues may be negligible in traditional traffic simulations, they significantly affect traffic-vehicle co-simulations where vehicle dynamics are sensitive to road grade variations. This paper investigates the impact of unprocessed elevation data on vehicle behavior and energy consumption using a 42-mile simulation along Interstate 81. We propose an elevation processing workflow that can mitigate the effects stem from elevation data issues, improving the realism and stability of traffic-vehicle co-simulation. Results show that the method effectively removes noise and abrupt elevation transitions while preserving roadway geometry.

Focal Areas: The primary alignment of the proposed framework is with focal area 2, because it guides the construction of a hierarchy of predictive models generated from Statistical and AI/ ML techniques. There are connections to focal areas 1 and 3 because surrogates allow for coupled data assimilation techniques where the full model is too expensive (1) and the discovered balance laws can be used as an insightful analysis tool to validate the structure of models (3).

How Well Can Quantum Embedding Method Predict the Reaction Profiles for Hydrogenation of Small Li Clusters?

Quantum computing leverages the principles of quantum mechanics in novel ways to tackle complex chemistry problems that cannot be accurately addressed using traditional quantum chemistry methods. However, the high computational cost and available number of physical qubits with high fidelity limit its application to small chemical systems. This work employed a quantum-classical framework which features a quantum active space-embedding approach to perform simulations of chemical reactions that require up to 14 qubits. This framework was applied to prototypical example metal hydrogenation reactions: the coupling between hydrogen and Li 2 , Li 3 , and Li 4 clusters. Particular attention was paid to the computation of barriers and reaction energies. The predicted reaction profiles compare well with advanced classical quantum chemistry methods, demonstrating the potential of the quantum embedding algorithm to map out reaction profiles of realistic gas-phase chemical reactions to ascertain qualitative energetic trends. Additionally, the predicted potential energy curves provide a benchmark to compare against both current and future quantum embedding approaches.

Analytical study of viscous effects on transonic flow over boattail nozzles

An analytical study has been made of the effects of viscous/inviscid interactions on the transonic flow over boattail nozzles. The theoretical method couples a relaxation solution of the full potential transonic flow equations with a conventional boundary-layer solution to account for displacement-thickness effects. Surface pressures calculated on circular-arc boattails with solid jet-plume simulators show good agreement with experiment for free-stream Mach numbers less than 0.90. For separated flows, an empirical discriminating streamline model of the separation bubble gives good results until the onset of shock-induced separation, which occurs typically at a Mach number of about 0.90.

Computation of transonic boattail flow with separation

The relaxation procedure of South and Jameson for the full potential transonic flow equation was coupled to a modified Reshotko-Tucker integral boundary-layer technique with an empirical model for separated flow. The viscous and inviscid flows were solved iteratively until convergence was obtained. This iterative method was then applied to the subsonic and transonic flow over a series of axisymmetric circular-arc boattails with solid jet plume simulators. Comparisons of theoretical and experimental surface pressures and boattail drag are presented over a free-stream Mach numbers below 0.90. The qualitative variation of boattail drag with free-stream Mach number and boattail angle well into the region of transonic drag rise was correctly predicted; however, the absolute drag levels were significantly underpredicted. For separated flows, the empirical discriminating streamline model gives good results up to a free-stream Mach number of about 0.90 and allows reasonable predictions for shock-induced separation if the proper separation location and separation turning angle are known.

Hydrodynamic effects in a misaligned radial face seal

Hydrodynamic effects in a flat seal having an angular misalignment are analyzed, taking into account the radial variation in seal clearance. An analytical solution for axial force, restoring moment, and transverse moment is presented that covers the whole range from zero to full angular misalignment. Both low pressure seals with cavitating flow and high pressure seals with full fluid film are considered. Strong coupling is demonstrated between angular misalignment and transverse moment which leads the misalignment vector by 90 degrees. This transverse moment, which is entirely due to hydrodynamic effects, is a significant factor in the seal operating mechanism.

Solar array flight experiment

This is a closed form solution for the longitudinal oscillation of the Solar Array Flight Experiment (SAFE) blanket for all phases of deployment. The frequency response shows that the blanket frequency increases shortly before full deployment. That fact causes a coupling between the mast and the blanket frequency but, because of the relatively high speed of deployment, a buildup of resonance is unlikely.

The design of multirate digital control systems

The successive loop closures synthesis method is the only method for multirate (MR) synthesis in common use. A new method for MR synthesis is introduced which requires a gradient-search solution to a constrained optimization problem. Some advantages of this method are that the control laws for all control loops are synthesized simultaneously, taking full advantage of all cross-coupling effects, and that simple, low-order compensator structures are easily accomodated. The algorithm and associated computer program for solving the constrained optimization problem are described. The successive loop closures , optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are applied to two example design problems. A series of compensator pairs are synthesized for each example problem. The succesive loop closure, optimal control, and constrained optimization synthesis methods are compared, in the context of the two design problems.

Transonic CFD applications at Boeing

The use of computational methods for three dimensional transonic flow design and analysis at the Boeing Company is presented. A range of computational tools consisting of production tools for every day use by project engineers, expert user tools for special applications by computational researchers, and an emerging tool which may see considerable use in the near future are described. These methods include full potential and Euler solvers, some coupled to three dimensional boundary layer analysis methods, for transonic flow analysis about nacelle, wing-body, wing-body-strut-nacelle, and complete aircraft configurations. As the examples presented show, such a toolbox of codes is necessary for the variety of applications typical of an industrial environment. Such a toolbox of codes makes possible aerodynamic advances not previously achievable in a timely manner, if at all.
