Timeline Resource Analysis Program (TRAP): User's manual and program document

The Timeline Resource Analysis Program (TRAP), developed for scheduling and timelining problems, is described. Given an activity network, TRAP generates timeline plots, resource histograms, and tabular summaries of the network, schedules, and resource levels. It is written in ANSI FORTRAN for the Honeywell SIGMA 5 computer and operates in the interactive mode using the TEKTRONIX 4014-1 graphics terminal. The input network file may be a standard SIGMA 5 file or one generated using the Interactive Graphics Design System. The timeline plots can be displayed in two orderings: according to the sequence in which the tasks were read on input, and a waterfall sequence in which the tasks are ordered by start time. The input order is especially meaningful when the network consists of several interacting subnetworks. The waterfall sequence is helpful in assessing the project status at any point in time.

Gulf of Mexico satellite radar altimetry

The dynamic topography of the sea surface was measured. The radar altimeter measurements yield average ocean topographic data which are mapped. Seasonal deviations from a 3 year mean topography are presented. The altimeters are also instrumented with sample and hold gates which provide information about the shape and amplitude of the return waveform. Parameters including ocean surface wind speed and the significant wave height are determined. One hundred eighty six wind speed and significant wave height histograms are presented.

Seasat SAR identification of dry climate urban land cover

Digitally processed Seasat synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery of the Denver, Colorado area was examined to assess its potential for mapping urban land cover and the compatibility of SAR derived classes with those described in the U.S. Geological Survey classification system. The entire scene was interpreted to generate a small-scale land cover map. In addition, six subscene enlargements representative of urban land cover categories extant in the area were used as test sites for detailed analysis of land cover types. Two distinct approaches were employed and compared in examining the imagery - a visual interpretation of black-and-white positive transparencies and an automated-machine/visual interpretation. The latter used the Image 100 interactive image analysis system to generate land cover classes by density level slicing of the image frequency histogram.

High resolution X-ray spectroscopy from the Einstein Observatory

Results obtained from the Focal Plane Crystal Spectrometer (FPCS) are presented with particular reference to supernova remnants Puppis A and Cas A in the Galaxy, and N132D and N63A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. A schematic diagram of the FPCS is given, and spectrum reconstruction is outlined, noting that the final spectrum consists of a histogram of counting rate vs. energy corrected for the exposure time in each energy bin. Consideration is also given to the Virgo cluster and its two X-ray components: the hot exponent extending throughout much of the cluster and a cooler, 'halo', component centered on M87. FPCS observations of central M87 are presented, and it is postulated that the central portion of the M87 'halo' source contains material with a dominant temperature near 10 to the 7th K or below about 2 x 10 to the 6th K.

Helium cyclotron resonance within the earth's magnetosphere

A histogram of electromagnetic Alfven/ion cyclotron wave frequencies, sampled within the geostationary environment and normalized by the equatorial proton cyclotron frequency, shows a dramatic gap centered near the helium (He +) cyclotron frequency. Also, strongly cyclotron phase bunched helium ions (20-200 eV) have been observed directly within the vicinity of wave environments. These observations are interpreted as resulting from the absorption of the waves through cyclotron resonance by cool ambient populations of helium ions.

Solar cells and modules from dentritic web silicon

Some of the noteworthy features of the processes developed in the fabrication of solar cell modules are the handling of long lengths of web, the use of cost effective dip coating of photoresist and antireflection coatings, selective electroplating of the grid pattern and ultrasonic bonding of the cell interconnect. Data on the cells is obtained by means of dark I-V analysis and deep level transient spectroscopy. A histogram of over 100 dentritic web solar cells fabricated in a number of runs using different web crystals shows an average efficiency of over 13%, with some efficiencies running above 15%. Lower cell efficiency is generally associated with low minority carrier time due to recombination centers sometimes present in the bulk silicon. A cost analysis of the process sequence using a 25 MW production line indicates a selling price of $0.75/peak watt in 1986. It is concluded that the efficiency of dentritic web cells approaches that of float zone silicon cells, reduced somewhat by the lower bulk lifetime of the former.

Methodology for measurement of fault latency in a digital avionic miniprocessor

Using a gate level emulation of a typical avionics miniprocessor, fault injection experiments were performed to (1) determine the time to detect a fault by comparison monitoring, (2) forecast a program's ability to detect faults and (3) validate the fault detection coverage of a typical self test program. To estimate time to detect, six programs ranging in complexity from 6 to 147 instructions, were emulated. Each program was executed repetitively in the presence of a single stuck at fault at a gate node or device pin. Detection was assumed to occur whenever the computed outputs differed from the corresponding outputs of the same program executed in a nonfaulted processor. Histograms of faults detected versus number of repetitions to detection were tabulated. Using a simple model of fault detection, which was based in an analog with the selection of balls in an urn, distributions of time to detect were computed and compared with those obtained empirically. A self test program of 2,000 executable instructions was designed expressly for the study. The only requirement imposed on the design was that it should achieve 95% coverage. The program was executed in the presence of a single stuck-at fault at a gate node on device pin. The proportion of detected faults are tabulated. In all experiments faults were selected at random over gate nodes or device pins.

As-built design specification for PARHIS

The program is part of the CLASFYG package. It produces histograms of the greeness profile derived parameters alpha, beta, t sub o, and chi squared, which are computed by the CLASFYG program. Alpha is the approximate greeness rise time, beta is the approximate greeness decay time, t sub o is the spectral crop emergence date, and chi squared per degree of freedom is the goodness of fit of the actual data to the computed greeness profile. The program also produces statistical information concerning the parameters.

Comparison of storm-time changes of geomagnetic field at ground and at MAGSAT altitudes

Computations concerning variations of the geomagnetic field at MAGSAT altitudes were investigated. Using MAGSAT data for the X, Y, and Z components of the geomagnetic field, a computer conversion to yield the H component was performed. Two methods of determining delta H normalized to a constant geocentric distance R sub 0 = 6800 were investigated, and the utility of elta H at times of magnetic storms was considered. Delta H at a geographical latitude of 0 at dawn and dusk, the standard Dst, and K sub p histograms were plotted and compared. Magnetic anomalies are considered. Examination of data from the majority of the 400 passes of MAGSAT considered show a reasonable delta H versus latitude variation. Discrepancies in values are discussed.

Misregistration's effects on classification and proportion estimation accuracy

The estimates of crop type and acreage are undertaken in the AgRISTARS program by registering multiple date acquisitions of small subareas of LANDSAT scenes (termed segments), and applying multispectral analysis to them. An important contribution to errors in classification and acreage estimates is misregistration between multiple acquisitions. The formula used to express this relationship is given and the operations applied are so shown in diagrams. The taking of a LANDSAT feature vector and the derivation of the brightness and greeness are illustrated. It is shown that for any given sensor IFOV geometry, typical populations of fields can be derived and histograms can be plotted of the number of fields against field size according to ground truth. As a function of the resolution element, the IFOV of the sensor can draw the proportion of pure pixels in a given crop. Because the thematic mapper has a smaller resolution, the proportion of pixels that are pure in any given area will be larger.

METEOSAT studies of clouds and radiation budget

Radiation budget studies of the atmosphere/surface system from Meteosat, cloud parameter determination from space, and sea surface temperature measurements from TIROS N data are all described. This work was carried out on the interactive planetary image processing system (IPIPS), which allows interactive manipulationion of the image data in addition to the conventional computational tasks. The current hardware configuration of IPIPS is shown. The I(2)S is the principal interactive display allowing interaction via a trackball, four buttons under program control, or a touch tablet. Simple image processing operations such as contrast enhancing, pseudocoloring, histogram equalization, and multispectral combinations, can all be executed at the push of a button.

The surface albedo of the earth in the near ultraviolet /330-340 nm/

Satellite-borne measurements of solar radiation backscattered by the earth and atmosphere allow a determination of the surface albedo in the near ultraviolet. The data yielded albedos at tropical latitudes during a 15-month period in 1979-1980. The wavelengths studied are 331.2 and 339.8 nm. Sixty-nine percent of the measurements imply albedos less than 0.3. Higher values include a contribution due to reflection from clouds and are consistent with previous estimates of the fractional cloudover in the tropics. An albedo histogram based on a bin width of 0.1 shows results in the range 0.1-0.2 to be the most frequent, appearing in 29% of the cases, although values which span the entire range 0.0-1.0 are present. The derived albedos show no correlation with solar zenith angle. This result is consistent with the fact that, at the wavelengths considered, the diffuse integrated intensity is larger than the attenuated direct solar beam near the ground.

Results from the central Hyades survey

Results of a soft X-ray survey of the central 5 deg of the Hyades star cluster made with the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter are presented. Virtually all of the late F and early G stars in the cluster were detected at an X-ray luminosity of greater than 10 to the 28.5 erg/sec, although only about 50% of the stars in the cluster as a whole were detected. Plots of X-ray luminosity against B-V index indicate that the typical solar-type star in the Hyades is emitting soft X-rays at a level approximately 30 times that of the active sun. Histograms of the X-ray to bolometric luminosity ratio reveal a gradual distinction between late A-early F stars, which are expected to possess little or no convective envelope, and solar-type (F8-G5) stars, with convective outer atmospheres. Results confirm the dependence of stellar coronal activity on rotation, and establish the prevalence of stellar coronae throughout the main sequence and the giant regions of the H-R diagram.

A statistical analysis of simulated data from potential stratospheric satellite missions

A simplified one-dimensional model is used to analyze simulated data from typical proposed satellite measurements of trace species in the stratosphere. Uncertainties are introduced in simulated species concentration measurements and applied to the basic physical and chemical model data. The results of the calculations are then used to predict uncertainties in the species concentrations computed by the model. Candidate satellite missions can be evaluated for net information acquired by applying the error analysis. An abbreviated depiction of the computational procedure is given, and sample histograms based on an accumulation of 200 calculations are shown for H2O2 and ClNO3, demonstrating that emergent species distributions are roughly Gaussian in the logarithm of number density. Calculated vertical concentration profiles for these two species are presented.
