Developing nonlinear laser-plasma instability models for high-fidelity, multi-physics simulation capability for ICF/HED (IC Report) [Slides]

Modeling nonlinear effects of laser plasma instabilities (LPI) is critically important for ICF/HED experiments. Our project has the following goals: • Develop physics-based nonlinear LPI models using PIC simulations • Couple the nonlinear LPI effects to macroscopic modeling of ICF/HED exp. through laser ray-tracing (LRT).

IC w22_phadiagractox Highlight: Composition-dependent melting temperature of a compound [Poster]

Figure 1 displays, ambient melting points of the Au-Cu system as a function of Cu atomic percent: present model vs. experimental data from four different sources. Figure 2 displays, ambient melting points of the U-O system as a function of O atomic percent: present model vs. both experiment and quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations on the stoichiometric U-O compounds.

Annual IC Progress Report

The goal of this project is to computationally investigate the progenitors of astrophysical gamma-ray bursts (GRB), the most extreme explosions in the universe across length and time scales. We have developed a cutting-edge, code-bridging approach to exploring the physics behind these luminous events to test the hypothesis that GRBs with electromagnetic radio emission originate from massive star (MS) and black hole (BH) binary systems. Our multi-scale, multi-physics theoretical framework for GRBs is based on solving well-defined and testable hydrodynamics problems associated with the dynamical evolution of the system. We solve stages of the evolution in a tractable way with a suite of well-developed state-of-the-art computational tools that include the stellar evolution code MESA, the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) code Athena++, and the binary black hole (BBH) population synthesis code COSMIC, as well as a number of self-written python post-processing tools.

Cold Plasma IC Report

This past year we completed the simulation campaign in support of our magnetospheric cold plasma research project. This project aimed to develop the next-generation particle instruments to measure the properties of the cold particle populations in the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Orbital Debris IC Report

We started a simulation campaign in support of our ongoing plasma signatures of small orbital debris project SINTRA program funded by IARPA. This project aims to identify plasma signatures generated by the interaction of small orbital debris (>10cm) with space plasma that can be used for detection, tracking and eventually, develop technologies to remove these small but lethal objects. The small orbital debris problem is increasing exponentially threaten the current and future use of space.

Containerized Application Security for ICS (CAPSec)

The slides will be presented at a DOE CESER Peer Review for the Risk Management Tools and Technology (RMT) that provide an overview of the CAPSec project. The slides discuss the live-updates and live-migration results along with an overview of the demonstration performed for this project. The peer review is scheduled for August 27-29.

Highlight of IC project: w25_dreamxd

(left) The Earth’s radiation belts are donut-shaped regions containing MeV electrons (color contour for density) trapped by the magnetic field (white curves). We use DREAMxD code to model their dynamics. (right) We develop a new method to accelerate a key piece of the code – diffusion coefficient calculation. Comparing the compute time in node hours required by the standard approach to the compute time required for the fast method, it shows that the new method can be 100x faster for a large problem size.
