Program on stimulating operational private sector use of Earth observation satellite information

Ideas for new businesses specializing in using remote sensing and computerized spatial data systems were developd. Each such business serves as an 'information middleman', buying raw satellite or aircraft imagery, processing these data, combining them in a computer system with customer-specific information, and marketing the resulting information products. Examples of the businesses the project designed are: (1) an agricultural facility site evaluation firm; (2) a mass media grocery price and supply analyst and forecaster; (3) a management service for privately held woodlots; (4) a brokerage for insulation and roofing contractors, based on infrared imagery; (5) an expanded real estate information service. In addition, more than twenty-five other commercially attractive ideas in agribusiness, forestry, mining, real estate, urban planning and redevelopment, and consumer information were created. The commercial feasibility of the five business was assessed. This assessment included market surveys, revenue projections, cost analyses, and profitability studies. The results show that there are large and enthusiastic markets willing to pay for the services these businesses offer, and that the businesses could operate profitably.

Interactive modeling, design and analysis of large spacecraft

An efficient computer aided design and analysis capability applicable to large space structures was developed to relieve the engineer of much of the effort required in the past. The automated capabilities can be used to rapidly synthesize, evaluate, and determine performance characteristics and costs for future large spacecraft concepts. The interactive design and evaluation of advanced spacecraft program (IDEAS) is used to illustrate the power, efficiency, and versatility of the approach. The coupling of space environment modeling algorithms with simplified analysis and design modules in the IDEAS program permits rapid evaluation of completing spacecraft and mission designs. The approach is particularly useful in the conceptual design phase of advanced space missions when a multiplicity of concepts must be considered before a limited set can be selected or more detailed analysis. Integrated spacecraft systems level data and data files are generated or subsystems and mission reexamination and/or refinement and for more rigorous analyses.

Component Cost Analysis of Large Scale Systems

The ideas of cost decomposition is summarized to aid in the determination of the relative cost (or 'price') of each component of a linear dynamic system using quadratic performance criteria. In addition to the insights into system behavior that are afforded by such a component cost analysis CCA, these CCA ideas naturally lead to a theory for cost-equivalent realizations.

Convective flow during dendritic growth

A review is presented of the major experimental findings obtained from recent ground-based research conducted under the SPAR program. Measurements of dendritic growth at small supercoolings indicate that below approximately 1.5 K a transition occurs from diffusive control to convective control in succinonitrile, a model system chosen for this study. The key theoretical ideas concerning diffusive and convective heat transport during dendritic growth are discussed, and it is shown that a transition in the transport control should occur when the characteristic length for diffusion becomes larger than the characteristic length for convection. The experimental findings and the theoretical ideas discussed suggest that the Fluid Experiment System could provide appropriate experimental diagnostics for flow field visualization and quantification of the fluid dynamical effects presented here.

Interactive analysis of a large aperture Earth observations satellite

A system level design and analysis has been conducted on an Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) system using the Interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) computer-aided design and analysis program. The IDEAS program consists of about 40 user-friendly technical modules and an interactive graphics display. The reflector support system and feed mast of the EOS spacecraft are constructed with box-truss structural concept, a lattice configuration which can be packaged for delivery in a single Shuttle flight and deployed in orbit. The deployed spacecraft consists of a 120-m by 60-m parabolic focal axis. The spacecraft was modeled for structural, thermal, and control systems analysis and structural elements were designed. On-orbit dynamic and thermal loading analyses were conducted; spacecraft weights and developmental and first unit costs were determined.

Space structure vibration modes: How many exist? Which ones are important?

Several assertions are argued regarding mode analysis of structural vibration. The idea of a "mode' is, in essence, a mathematical one. It is highly unlikely that any real structure can vibrate exactly so that all its points move in unison; in other words, it is highly unlikely that any structure has any modes. As an approximation, however, the use of a mode is an excellent one for many structures, especially for the "lower modes'. The agreement between experiment and theory for the "higher modes' tends to become weaker. In this approximate sense, most structures have a very large number of modes. It is elementary to show, however, that no real structure has an infinite number of modes. The only utility of the "infinite modes' idea is within the purely mathematical domain. Many "error indices' can be defined as guidelines for structural modal order reduction. Simple modal truncation, although suggested by experience with slender rods, is naive. The proper process is mode selection, based on a appropriate error criterion.

Nonlinear problems in flight dynamics

A comprehensive framework is proposed for the description and analysis of nonlinear problems in flight dynamics. Emphasis is placed on the aerodynamic component as the major source of nonlinearities in the flight dynamic system. Four aerodynamic flows are examined to illustrate the richness and regularity of the flow structures and the nature of the flow structures and the nature of the resulting nonlinear aerodynamic forces and moments. A framework to facilitate the study of the aerodynamic system is proposed having parallel observational and mathematical components. The observational component, structure is described in the language of topology. Changes in flow structure are described via bifurcation theory. Chaos or turbulence is related to the analogous chaotic behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems characterized by the existence of strange attractors having fractal dimensionality. Scales of the flow are considered in the light of ideas from group theory. Several one and two degree of freedom dynamical systems with various mathematical models of the nonlinear aerodynamic forces and moments are examined to illustrate the resulting types of dynamical behavior. The mathematical ideas that proved useful in the description of fluid flows are shown to be similarly useful in the description of flight dynamic behavior.

Space systems computer-aided design technology

The interactive Design and Evaluation of Advanced Spacecraft (IDEAS) system is described, together with planned capability increases in the IDEAS system. The system's disciplines consist of interactive graphics and interactive computing. A single user at an interactive terminal can create, design, analyze, and conduct parametric studies of earth-orbiting satellites, which represents a timely and cost-effective method during the conceptual design phase where various missions and spacecraft options require evaluation. Spacecraft concepts evaluated include microwave radiometer satellites, communication satellite systems, solar-powered lasers, power platforms, and orbiting space stations.

Gas side heat transfer: 2-D flow

Significant progress was made in advancing the idea of establishing a unified approach for predicting airfoil heat transfer for a wide range of operating conditions and geometries. Preliminary results are encouraging and further mixing length (ml) turbulence modeling ideas will be explored, concentrating on transition behavior. The capability of available modeling techniques to predict airfoil surface heat transfer distributions in a two-dimensional flow field was assessed, experimental data as required for model verification were acquired, and improvements in the analytic models was made and verified.

Thermodynamic evaluation of transonic compressor rotors using the finite volume approach

Progress made in extending the finite volume explicit time marching method to laminar and turbulent flow during the time period from January to May 1985 is documented. Previously, extensions were made to the finite volume method to improve the accuracy of the calculation of total pressure in compressible inviscid flow. The current work extends these ideas and develops new ideas which allow the calculation of laminar and turbulent boundary layers in internal flows. The method is verified using four test cases with free-stream Mach numbers ranging from .075 to 1.20.

Modeling solar magnetic structures

Some ideas in the theoretical study of force-free magnetic fields and magnetostatic fields, which are relevant to the effort of using magnetograph data as inputs to model the quasi-static, large-scale magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere are discussed. Basic physical principles will be emphasized. An attempt will be made to assess what we may learn, physically, from the models based on these ideas. There is prospect for learning useful physics and this ought to be an incentive for intensifying the efforts to improve vector magnetograph technology and to solve the basic radiative-transfer problems encountered in the interpretation of magnetograph raw data.

Mineralogy and chemistry of the Earth

The Earth is the prototype if not typical terrestrial planet. Ideas about the origin, evolution, structure and chemistry of the planets can be tested most thoroughly on the Earth. Similarly, the study of the other planets has generated new ideas which may be applicable to the Earth. For example the concepts of magma oceans, large polar wander, global stress fields, buoyant lithosphere, deep cumulate reservoirs, multiple tectonic styles and crust generation may also apply to the Earth, present or past. It is no longer valid to think of the mantle as an essentially homogeneous undifferentiated shell of olivine with pockes of basalt providing melts to midocean ridges and oceanic islands. It appears to be a well differentiated, outgassed body with both radial and lateral chemical variations. The lower mantle is close to chondritic in its major element chemistry. The transition region is garnet and clinopyroxene rich and may be a major basalt reservoir. This would explain the thin crust paradox. Chemical stratification of the Earth probably occurred during accretion.

Methods for roof-top mini-arrays

To test the idea of the Linsley effect mini array for the study of giant air showers, it is desirable to have a trigger that exploits the effect itself. In addition to the trigger, it is necessary to have a method for measuring the relative arrival times of the particle swarm selected by the trigger. Since the idea of mini arrays is likely to appeal to small research groups, it is desirable to try to design relatively simple and inexpensive methods, and methods that utilize existing detectors. Clusters of small detectors have been designed for operation in the local particle density realm where the probability of or = 2 particles per detector is small. Consequently, this method can discriminate pulses from each detector and thenceforth deal mainly with logic pulses.

Tether pointing platform and space elevator mechanisms analysis of the key concepts for SATP and scaled SATP

The key concepts for a scaled and full model Science and Applications Tethered Platform (SATP) are analysized. This includes a tether pointing platform and a space elevator. The mechanism concepts and technological solutions are given. The idea of the tether pointing platform mechanism is to control and stabilize the attitude of a platform by means of a movable tether. The idea of the space elevator mechanism for a scaled SATP is to drag the tether gripping it between two rotating wheels.

Protostars and planets - Overview from a planetary perspective

Today the simultaneous formation of a star and planetary system is understood to be natural and coupled consequences of the collapse of an interstellar cloud of molecular gas and dust. Ideas put forward to account for the existence of the solar system seem generally applicable to star formation throughout the universe. If this is indeed the case, then planetary systems should be present in large numbers throughout the universe. Even the gross structural features of the planetary system in the solar system seem largely to be the result of nearly deterministic processes, rather than the result of chance alone; many planetary systems throughout the universe may resemble this one. This chapter summarizes and examines some of the implications of ideas about the formation of stars and planetary systems.

Topological classification of flow separation on three-dimensional bodies

In the study of three-dimensional, separated flows, a topological approach to separation and a phenomenological approach have been considered. The topological approach is based on ideas of Poincare (1928), while the phenomenological approach distinguishes between 'open' and 'closed' separation as posed by Wang (1974). In the present paper, the topological description provided by Legendre (1956, 1965, 1982) is considered, taking into account its utilization by Tobak and Peake (1979, 1982). An attempt is made to provide a more complete framework for the description of separated as well as attached flows. Nomenclature is introduced to describe the topology of the skin-friction-line portraits on a three-dimensional body. The topological ideas are illustrated by the use of hypothetical oil-flow experiments supplemented with actual flow-visualization data when possible.
