Image data rate converter: A concept

Establish data tracks on periphery of rotating drum and axially displace entire drum to place given track in alignment with either fixed or rotating read/record head. Accurate control of speed drum and rotating head can be accomplished by using separate synchronous motors driven by digitally-set oscillators to provide required difference in speed.

ERTS image data compression technique evaluation

The author has identified the following significant results. Tapes of compressed ERTS data were obtained to permit later reconstruction and to prove that in general four ERTS MSS tapes can be put onto a single compressed tape. A compressed tape was reconstructed and imagery made. The data were compressed using the essentially information preserving SSDIAM algorithm, with mappings of from 1 to 3 levels and imagery was made of the result. This imagery shows that no visual degradation results from the one level mapping while compression is significantly increased. Mappings of up to three levels shows negligible deterioration in areas of moderate to high data activity, but contouring is noticeable in areas of uniform data such as the plains region.

Orbit improvement from satellite imaging data obtainable from outer planet missions.

Equations of motion are established for a dynamical system in which a spacecraft flies close to and interacts with an outer planet and one or more of its satellites. For the computation of the state and mass partials needed in a simultaneous orbit correction of n interacting bodies, a notably compact set of variational equations is derived. The above system of differential equations is integrated numerically on a computer. Spacecraft-satellite direction measurements accurate to plus or minus 10 sec were simulated along three representative trajectories (Mariner/Jupiter/Saturn 1977 missions) approaching Io, Titan, and Iapetus to within 41000, 13000, and 7000 km, respectively. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of the need for future work on the orbits of the satellites of the outer planets.

Image data rate converter having a drum with a fixed head and a rotatable head

A data-rate converter is disclosed comprising a rotatable data-storing drum with at least one fixed read/record head and a rotatable read/record head. The latter is rotatable in a circular path about the drum axis of rotation. The drum is positionable in any one of a plurality of axial positions with respect to the heads, so that at least one drum track is aligned with the fixed head in one drum position and with the rotatable head in another drum position. When a track is aligned with the fixed head, data may be recorded therin or read out therefrom at a rate which is a function of drum rotation, while when aligned with the rotatable head, data may be recorded or read out at a rate which is a function of the rates and directions of rotation of both the drum and the head.

Preparation of remotely-sensed image data for land use planning

Preliminary processing operations required before computer compatible tapes (CCT) can be utilized routinely to realize the full potential of ERTS imagery for rapid mensuration, quantitative estimation and for detecting and monitoring changes over time are described. Geographic referencing, geometric manipulations, classification, and association overlays (as of political boundaries) are discussed.
