Large Non‐Resonant Infrared Optical Second Harmonic Generation in Bulk Crystals of Van der Waals Semiconductor, SnP 2 Se 6

2D van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a highly promising candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. This study presents the synthesis, comprehensive linear optical, and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) characterization of a novel 2D vdW semiconductor SnP2Se6 in its bulk single crystal form. It exhibits an indirect bandgap of ≈1.47 eV and an exceptional non-resonant SHG coefficient of d 33 ∼ −222 ± 30 pm V −1 at a fundamental wavelength of 2 µm, which is ≈7 times larger than that of the commercial AgGaSe 2 with a comparable bandgap. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the linear and nonlinear optical properties exhibit reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements, revealing the chemical origin of the enhanced properties. Moreover, SnP 2 Se 6 can exhibit both type-I and type-II phase matching over a wide spectral range, fulfilling one of the key criteria for an ideal NLO crystal. These exceptional properties position SnP 2 Se 6 as a highly promising candidate for NLO applications.

Development of Nontargeted Workflow of Occupational Exposure by Infrared Ion Spectroscopy and Silicone Wristbands’ Passive Sampling

Monitoring chemical exposure has well-established protocols and procedures for occupational health and industrial hygiene across various career fields and in a variety of occupational and environmental conditions. Iterative analytical development has led to validated methods to provide employers and employees with safe working conditions in terms of industrial hygiene. These validated methods are commonly supported by commercial laboratories. Here, this workflow is explicitly a targeted approach in which sampling media, sample preparation, chemical separation, quantitative target detection, and post processing are well established. This workflow also relies on commercially available chemical surrogates, isotopically labeled internal standards, and certified/standard reference materials from reputable vendors. An untargeted workflow lacks many key ingredients of validated analytical methods to include the known chemical target.

The infrared imaging video bolometer at Wendelstein 7-X

The radiated power distribution is a crucial aspect of heat transport, heat load mitigation, and plasma exhaust performance. An imaging video bolometer camera has been installed to measure the plasma radiated power in the divertor region of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. This diagnostic offers a wide-angle (40° × 68°) sampling of the plasma volume in both the poloidal and toroidal directions. The field-of-view is covered with a large number (> 500) of bolometer channels, providing imaging capability. The diagnostic design is introduced here together with its data analysis procedure. A set of laboratory experiments is performed to assess the thermal properties of the gold absorber foil and their spatial uniformity. Following installation, a heat source originating from the inertially cooled front of the diagnostic is identified and filtered out. The discharge data indicate a satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio as well as spatiotemporal resolution. These represent the first toroidally resolved images of the line-integrated radiated power in the W7-X island divertor. The diagnostic was then upgraded with a thinner platinum absorber and adjusted mirrors. Early data from the most recent experimental campaign employing the upgraded design show a considerable improvement in the diagnostic performance with more bolometer channels (> 1400), extended coverage, and increased spatial resolution.

Simplified Model and Approach to Transform Infrared Surface Temperature to Film Effectiveness in a Conjugate Heat Transfer Experiment

In the pursuit of more efficient gas turbines, film cooling is a critical technology. This article describes a simplified engineering model based on a one-dimensional thermal resistance network. The model is used to relate film-cooling effectiveness and heat transfer augmentation to local overall cooling effectiveness in a conjugate flat plate experiment. Here, this article presents experimental proof-of-concept data to demonstrate the potential for this model. In contrast to previous approaches, neither the wall heat flux nor the adiabatic wall temperature is required to estimate the local film-cooling performance parameters. The model predicts surface temperatures that are within the experimental uncertainties over the range for which the model is trained and to within five percent when the model is extrapolated to higher coolant channel Reynolds numbers. This article is relevant to conjugate test rigs that can measure the hot-surface temperature distribution with and without film cooling. This information may also be relevant to designers as a method to approximate surface temperatures or used as an approximate heat transfer model for optimization studies.

Infrared Fingerprint and Unimolecular Decay Dynamics of the Hydroperoxyalkyl Intermediate (•QOOH) in Cyclopentane Oxidation

A transient carbon-centered hydroperoxyalkyl intermediate (•QOOH) in the oxidation of cyclopentane is identified by IR action spectroscopy with time-resolved unimolecular decay to hydroxyl (OH) radical products that are detected by UV laser-induced fluorescence. Two nearly degenerate •QOOH isomers, β- and γ-QOOH, are generated by H atom abstraction of the cyclopentyl hydroperoxide precursor. Fundamental and first overtone OH stretch transitions and combination bands of •QOOH are observed and compared with anharmonic frequencies computed by second-order vibrational perturbation theory. An OH stretch transition is also observed for a conformer arising from torsion about a low-energy CCOO barrier. Definitive identification of the β-QOOH isomer relies on its significantly lower transition state (TS) barrier to OH products, which results in rapid unimolecular decay and near unity branching to OH products. A benchmarking approach is utilized to compute high-accuracy stationary point energies, most importantly TS barriers, for cyclopentane oxidation (C 5 H 9 O 2 ), building on higher level reference calculations for ethane oxidation (C 2 H 5 O 2 ). The experimental OH product appearance rates are compared with computed statistical microcanonical rates using RRKM theory, including heavy-atom tunneling, thereby validating the computed TS barrier. The results are extended to thermal unimolecular decay rate constants at temperatures and pressures relevant to cyclopentane combustion via master-equation modeling. Furthermore, the various torsional and ring puckering states of the wells and transition states are explicitly considered in these calculations.
