New Record Ocean Temperatures and Related Climate Indicators in 2023

The global physical and biogeochemical environment has been substantially altered in response to increased atmospheric greenhouse gases from human activities. In 2023, the sea surface temperature (SST) and upper 2000 m ocean heat content (OHC) reached record highs. The 0–2000 m OHC in 2023 exceeded that of 2022 by 15 ± 10 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules) (updated IAP/CAS data); 9 ± 5 ZJ (NCEI/NOAA data). The Tropical Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans recorded their highest OHC observed since the 1950s. Associated with the onset of a strong El Niño, the global SST reached its record high in 2023 with an annual mean of ~0.23°C higher than 2022 and an astounding > 0.3°C above 2022 values for the second half of 2023. The density stratification and spatial temperature inhomogeneity indexes reached their highest values in 2023.

Techno-Economic Analysis of Recuperated Joule-Brayton Pumped Thermal Energy Storage

This article describes a techno-economic model for pumped thermal energy storage systems based on recuperated Joule-Brayton cycles and two-tank liquid storage. Models have been developed for each component, with particular emphasis on the heat exchangers. Economic metrics such as the power and energy capital costs (i.e., per-kW and per-kWh capacity) and levelized cost of storage are evaluated by gathering numerous cost correlations from the literature, thereby enabling estimates of uncertainty. It is found that the use of heat exchangers with effectivenesses up to 0.95 is economically worthwhile, but higher values lead to rapidly escalating component size and system cost. Several hot storage fluids are considered; those operating at the highest temperatures (chloride salts) improve the round-trip efficiency but the benefit is marginal and may not warrant the additional material costs and risk when compared to lower-temperature nitrate salts. Cost-efficiency trade-offs are explored using a multi-objective optimization algorithm, yielding optimal designs with round-trip efficiencies in the range 59-72% and corresponding levelized storage costs of 0.12 0.03 and 0.38 0.10 $/kWhe. Lifetime costs are competitive with lithium-ion batteries for discharging durations greater than 6 h under current scenarios.

Pumped Thermal Energy Storage: Thermodynamics and Economics

This presentation gives an overview of Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES), and in particular concentrates on the performance and cost of a Joule-Brayton cycle with liquid storage. Results for systems with supercritical CO2 are also presented. PTES may be hybridized with solar heat, and some examples are provided as well as an overview of potential issues.

Pumped Thermal Energy Storage With Liquid Storage

Pumped Thermal Energy Storage (PTES) uses electricity to power a heat pump; transferring heat from a cold space to a hot space forms a hot and a cold thermal reservoir, thereby storing energy. To discharge, the temperature difference between the two stores is used to drive a heat engine which generates electricity. In this chapter, PTES systems which store energy in liquids will be described. The chapter will concentrate on Joule-Brayton power cycles with molten salt storage. Part-load operation of Joule-Brayton PTES with liquid storage can be managed with "inventory control," and it is demonstrated that this control method leads to relatively good performance over a range of operating points.

Building and grid system benefits of demand flexibility and energy efficiency

The global electricity system is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Technology advancements in clean energy generation (e.g., solar photovoltaics and wind) and electrified demand (e.g., transportation and building heating) are providing a cost-competitive pathway to mitigate the urgent and severe consequences associated with a changing climate. In addition, as extreme events continue to increase in frequency and magnitude, solutions are needed for adapting to the current climate. Through energy efficiency and demand flexibility, buildings play a prominent role in meeting these challenges; recently in Joule, a paper by Langevin et al. provides clear insight into the magnitude of buildings’ technical potential.

Resistive heating in an electrified domain with a spherical inclusion: an ALEGRA verification study

A verification study is conducted for the ALEGRA software, using the problem of an electrified medium with a spherical inclusion, paying special attention to resistive heating. We do so by extending an existing analytic solution for this problem to include both conducting and insulating inclusions, and we examine the effects of mesh resolution and mesh topology, considering both body-fitted and rectangular meshes containing mixed cells. We present observed rates of convergence with respect to mesh refinement for four electromagnetic quantities: electric potential, electric field, current density and Joule power.

Another Year of Record Heat for the Oceans

Abstract Changes in ocean heat content (OHC), salinity, and stratification provide critical indicators for changes in Earth’s energy and water cycles. These cycles have been profoundly altered due to the emission of greenhouse gasses and other anthropogenic substances by human activities, driving pervasive changes in Earth’s climate system. In 2022, the world’s oceans, as given by OHC, were again the hottest in the historical record and exceeded the previous 2021 record maximum. According to IAP/CAS data, the 0–2000 m OHC in 2022 exceeded that of 2021 by 10.9 ± 8.3 ZJ (1 Zetta Joules = 10 21 Joules); and according to NCEI/NOAA data, by 9.1 ± 8.7 ZJ. Among seven regions, four basins (the North Pacific, North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, and southern oceans) recorded their highest OHC since the 1950s. The salinity-contrast index, a quantification of the “salty gets saltier—fresh gets fresher” pattern, also reached its highest level on record in 2022, implying continued amplification of the global hydrological cycle. Regional OHC and salinity changes in 2022 were dominated by a strong La Niña event. Global upper-ocean stratification continued its increasing trend and was among the top seven in 2022.

A record high average ZT over a wide temperature range in a Single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6

Conversion of waste heat into usable energy requires development of thermoelectric materials with high efficiency in a wide temperature range. Here, using first principles theory and Boltzmann transport theory, we show that the thermoelectric performance of the p-type single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 has a high figure of merit ZT of 2.62 at 900 K and a record high average ZT of ~1.93 (corresponding the conversion efficiency of ~23.2%) in the temperature range of 300-900 K. These values are significantly higher than the recently measured average ZT of ~0.57 in the temperature range of 310–823 K [Luo et al., Joule 4, 159–175 (2020)] in layered bulk Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 . We attribute the large enhancement of ZT in the single layer material to the increase in the thermoelectric power factor resulting from the complex Fermi surface. Our work reveals the great potential of a single-layer Sb 2 Si 2 Te 6 for wide-temperature-range thermoelectric applications.
