More About The Farley Three-Dimensional Braider

Farley three-dimensional braider, undergoing development, is machine for automatic fabrication of three-dimensional braided structures. Incorporates yarns into structure at arbitrary braid angles to produce complicated shape. Braiding surface includes movable braiding segments containing pivot points, along which yarn carriers travel during braiding process. Yarn carrier travels along sequence of pivot points as braiding segments move. Combined motions position yarns for braiding onto preform. Intended for use in making fiber preforms for fiber/matrix composite parts, such as multiblade propellers. Machine also described in "Farley Three-Dimensional Braiding Machine" (LAR-13911).

Effects of incandescent radiation on photosynthesis, growth rate and yield of 'Waldmann's Green' leaf lettuce

Effects of different ratios of incandescent (ln) to fluorescent (Fl) radiation were tested on growth of 'Waldmann's Green' leaf lettuce in a controlled environment. After 4 days of treatment, dry weight, leaf area, relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR) and photosynthetic rate (Pn) were greater for plants grown at 84 rather than 16 percent of total irradiance (82 W/sq m) from ln lamps. Although leaf dry weight and area were 12-17 percent greater at 84 percent ln after the first 8 days of treatment, there were no differences in RGR or Pn between treatments during the last 4 days. If 84 percent ln was compared with 50 percent ln, all cumulative growth parameters, RGR, NAR and Pn were greater for 84 percent ln during the first 4 days of treatment. However, during the second 4 days, RGR was greater for the 50 percent ln treatment, resulting in no net difference in leaf dry weight or area between treatments. Shifting from 84 to 50 percent ln radiation between the first and second 4 days of treatment increased plant dry weight, leaf area, RGR and NAR relative to those under 84 percent ln for 8 days continuously.

Optical Detection Of Flameout In A Combustor

Fuel supply shut down in time to prevent explosion. Optical flameout detector designed to signal control system of facility to cut off supply of fuel into combustion chamber if flame goes out. Combustor which optical flameout detector designed burns methane in air to provide hot gases for 8-ft high-temperature test chamber. Acoustical flameout detector for same combustor described in "Acoustical Detection of Flameout in Combustor" (LAR-14900). Fiber optic probes mounted to fuel-spray bar upstream of flame. No focusing optics used, and probes aimed across flow of gases at spot on combustion chamber wall downstream from spray bar. Arrangement enables flameout detection system to respond quickly to potential loss of flame since it detects movement of flame front away from spray bar face. Overall response time of detection system under 10 milliseconds.

Further Research On Helicopter Tail-Boom Strakes

Two documents discuss results of additional investigations of concept introduced in "Helicopter Tail-Boom Strakes" (LAR-13233). Essence of concept that strake or pair of strakes on side of tail boom facing retreating side of main rotor of helicopter perturbs flow in such way to increase aerodynamic pressure on that side, contributing force to thrust from tail rotor. Because of force, thrust required of tail rotor for yaw control reduced. Important advantage in low-speed flight, especially in sideward flight, in which tail-rotor thrust in absence of strake sometimes insufficient.

Increased Efficiency LED

In a semiconductor light emitting diode (LED) a large proportion of the light produced will be internally reflected when it strikes the end face of the LED at a semiconductor-air interface. This is due to the high index of refraction of most LED semiconductor materials. This problem may be partially overcome by modification of the shape of the LED by a reverse taper of the sides of the LED. Light is redirected by the taper to strike the interface at an angle closer to normal. This allows light to exit the LED that would be totally internally reflected in an untapered LED. The novelty of the present invention lies in the tapering of the sides of the LED for increased through transmission of light. Prior art devices have made use surface modifications such as roughening, addition of guiding layers, use of index matching materials and hemispherical shaping of the emitting end of the LED. Current technology LEDs have a transmission efficiency of only a few percent. An increase in this efficiency would be of great value to any technology that makes use of LEDs for light generation. The present invention is related to LAR 1 5050-SB, Collection of Light from Optical Fibers of NA greater than 1.

The reflection for dense plant canopies from the one-angle radiative transfer equation

An essential component of remote sensing of vegetation canopies from satellites is fundamental understanding. Since passive remote is driven by photons, the modeling of photon interactions with vegetation is a basic building block in that understanding. Several such photon transport models have been developed during the past two decades and continue to be developed. Different approaches have been followed including monte carlo, radiosity methods, geometric shadowing, and radiative transfer. In general, each approach has application for canopies with specific attributes. This presentation concerns the application of radiative transfer to dense vegetation canopies in which the soil does not participate. The approach taken here is novel in that a consistent theory for photon transport for non-rotationally invariant leaf scattering is developed in a canopy with a general leaf angle distribution (LAD). The theory is limited to the one-angle approximation (azimuthally averaged radiance) and is based on Chandrasekhar's analytical theory. While such a model is admittedly only approximate, it does fulfill a unique function in our search for understanding. In particular, the model is simple in its construct yet contains the essential features of canopy architecture that are mainly responsible for observed responses. Thus, this model will not only be a predictive tool but also an educational one. The mathematical setting is the radiative transfer equation in a dense (semiinfinite) canopy. The leaf scattering phase function is assumed to be Lambertian with different reflectance and transmittance. In addition, abaxial and adaxial differentiation is allowed which effectively destroys optical reciprocity. The analytical solution for the canopy BRDF is obtained by manipulation of the integral transport equation (a la Chandrasekhar) for a general LAD. With discretization of the. leaf angle, the resulting set of integral equations are solved iteratively including an acceleration procedure when the single scatter albedo is near one (in the NIR). Results will be compared to the LARS soybean canopy radiances as well as to broadleaf results from a recent Ames experiment.

Lightning Protection

Kit-built airplanes are more affordable because they are assembled by the owner and do not require Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. The Glasair III, is an advanced technology homebuilt, constructed of a fiberglass and graphite fiber composite material, and equipped with digital instruments. Both technologies make the airplane more susceptible to lightning effects. When Glasair manufacturer, Stoddard-Hamilton, decided that lightning protection would enable more extensive instrument flight and make the plane more marketable, they proposed a joint development program to NASA Langley Research Center (LAR). Under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract, Langley contractors designed and tested a lightning protection system, and the Glasair III-LP became the first kit-built composite aircraft to be lightning tested and protection-verified under FAA guidelines for general aviation aircraft.
