Analytic Solutions Of Equations For Q-Switched Lasers

Approximate closed-form, analytic equations for characteristics of Q-switched, continuous-wave-pumped laser express relationships among characteristics of output, pumping rate above threshold pumping rate, and rate of repetition of switch. Equations describe performance in terms of peak output power, energy in each pulse, average output power, and duration of each pulse as functions of pulse-repetition rate, actual pump power, threshold pump power, volume occupied by laser electromagnetic mode, and reflectivity of output coupler. Useful for analyzing performances of diode-pumped solid-state lasers.

Efficient TEM(00)-mode operation of a laser-diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser

The operation of a laser-diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser with a novel pumping geometry that ensures efficient conversion of pump energy into the TEM(00) mode is reported. Of the 1064-nm output, 11.8 microJ of energy was obtained in a 200-microsec pulse with 64 microJ of pump energy at 808 nm. The overall conversion and slope efficiencies were 18 and 23 percent, respectively.

Self-Modulated Laser Rangefinder

Longitudinal resonance modes exploited. Self-modulated-laser ranging system exploits presence of signals differing in frequency by longitudinalmode separation frequency fm. Two square-law photodetectors have outputs modulated by fm, and phase difference between two outputs is related to target distance. Laser transmitter/receiver measures distances as well as displacements of distant objects (such as vibrating buildings).

Mode Selection for a Single-Frequency Fiber Laser

A superstructured fiber-grating-based mode selection filter for a single-frequency fiber laser eliminates all free-space components, and makes the laser truly all-fiber. A ring cavity provides for stable operations in both frequency and power. There is no alignment or realignment required. After the fibers and components are spliced together and packaged, there is no need for specially trained technicians for operation or maintenance. It can be integrated with other modules, such as telescope systems, without extra optical alignment due to the flexibility of the optical fiber. The filter features a narrow line width of 1 kHz and side mode suppression ratio of 65 dB. It provides a high-quality laser for lidar in terms of coherence length and signal-to-noise ratio, which is 20 dB higher than solid-state or microchip lasers. This concept is useful in material processing, medical equipment, biomedical instrumentation, and optical communications. The pulse-shaping fiber laser can be directly used in space, airborne, and satellite applications including lidar, remote sensing, illuminators, and phase-array antenna systems.

1.1 eV GaInAs Cell Development for Dual-Use Solar and 1070 nm Laser Power Converters

Dual-use power converter cells can receive solar and laser power simultaneously to generate current, an application relevant to space and terrestrial industries. This study investigates two concepts of solar cells optimized for dual-use 1070 nm laser and solar power conversion, a single-junction and triple-junction cell. Because it is bandgap-tuned for a 1070 nm laser, the 1.1 eV junction is incorporated into each of the two designs, making its development key to the success of both concepts. Efficiency data for a one junction GaInAs cell demonstrates a laser conversion efficiency of 38% at 1070nm wavelength without an anti-reflection coating. However, the single-junction device requires optimization to reduce short wavelength absorption of the broad solar spectrum. In both devices, the graded buffer layers in the GaInAs cell affects the cell's performance by reducing threading dislocations in the active junction. However, the buffer in the three-junction device also acts as a lateral transport layer and so affects the fill factor depending on its sheet resistance. By varying the buffer thickness, we demonstrate a direct relationship between buffer thickness and sheet resistance reduction, while considering implications to open-circuit voltages. We also performed resistance modeling to determine the optimal grid spacing and thickness of the grid fingers to minimize losses due to sheet resistance and grid shading.

Synchronous pumping of picosecond dye laser using high efficiency second harmonic generation from optical fibres

The stable operation of a mode-locked dye laser synchronously pumped by the second harmonic of an Nd:YAG laser produced in an Nd codoped germanosilicate optical fiber is reported. The optical fiber preparation technique, which results in a second harmonic conversion efficiency of 2 percent, is described. This optical fiber SHG conversion efficiency is the highest reported to date using a continuous-wave mode-locked laser.

Fundamental Limit of 1/f Frequency Noise in Semiconductor Lasers Due to Mechanical Thermal Noise

So-called 1/f noise has power spectral density inversely proportional to frequency, and is observed in many physical processes. Single longitudinal-mode semiconductor lasers, used in variety of interferometric sensing applications, as well as coherent communications, exhibit 1/f frequency noise at low frequency (typically below 100kHz). Here we evaluate mechanical thermal noise due to mechanical dissipation in semiconductor laser components and give a plausible explanation for the widely-observed 1/f frequency noise, applying a methodology developed for fixed-spacer cavities for laser frequency stabilization. Semiconductor-laser's short cavity, small beam radius, and lossy components are expected to emphasize thermal-noise-limited frequency noise. Our simple model largely explains the different 1/f noise levels observed in various semiconductor lasers, and provides a framework where the noise may be reduced with proper design.

Optical communication with semiconductor laser diodes

A 25 megabit/sec direct detection optical communication system that used Q=4 PPM signalling was constructed and its performance measured under laboratory conditions. The system used a single-mode AlGaAs laser diode transmitter and low noise silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) photodetector. Comparison of measured performance with the theoretical revealed that modeling the APD output as a Gaussian process under conditions of negligible background radiation and low (less than 10 to the -12 power A) APD bulk leakage currents leads to substantial underestimates of optimal APD gain to use and overestimates of system bit error probability. A procedure is given to numerically compute system performance which uses the more accurate Webb's Approximation of the exact Conradi distribution for the APD ouput signal that does not require excessive amounts of computer time (a few minutes of VAX 8600 CPU time per system operating point). Examples are given which illustrate the breakdown of the Gaussian approximation in assessing system performance. This system achieved a bit error probability of 10 to the -6 power at a received signal energy corresponding to an average of 60 absorbed photons/bit and optimal APD gain of 700.

Wind Tunnel Testing of a One-Dimensional Laser Beam Scanning and Laser Sheet Approach to Shock Sensing

A 15- by 15-cm supersonic wind tunnel application of a one-dimensional laser beam scanning approach to shock sensing is presented. The measurement system design allowed easy switching between a focused beam and a laser sheet mode for comparison purposes. The scanning results were compared to images from the tunnel Schlieren imaging system. The tests revealed detectable changes in the laser beam in the presence of shocks. The results lend support to the use of the one-dimensional scanning beam approach for detecting and locating shocks in a flow, but some issues must be addressed in regards to noise and other limitations of the system.

High-power single spatial mode AlGaAs channeled-substrate-planar semiconductor diode lasers for spaceborne communications

A high power single spatial mode channeled substrate planar AlGaAs semiconductor diode laser was developed. The emission wavelength was optimized at 860 to 880 nm. The operating characteristics (power current, single spatial mode behavior, far field radiation patterns, and spectral behavior) and results of computer modeling studies on the performance of the laser are discussed. Reliability assessment at high output levels is included. Performance results on a new type of channeled substrate planar diode laser incorporating current blocking layers, grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition, to more effectively focus the operational current to the lasing region was demonstrated. The optoelectronic behavior and fabrication procedures for this new diode laser are discussed. The highlights include single spatial mode devices with up to 160 mW output at 8600 A, and quantum efficiencies of 70 percent (1 W/amp) with demonstrated operating lifetimes of 10,000 h at 50 mW.

Laser-Induced Enhancement of Acoustic Mode Quality Factor Revealed by Correlated Single-Particle Optical and Electron Microscopy

Acoustic modes in plasmonic nanostructures provide fundamental insights into their optomechanical behavior at the nanoscale, enabling emerging applications in plasmon-enhanced optomechanics, ultrasensitive sensing, and nanoscale energy transduction. Here we explore the modulation of acoustic phonon dynamics in lithographically fabricated gold nanodisks via laser-induced photothermal annealing. Using a correlated approach that utilizes both single-particle transient extinction spectroscopy and advanced electron microscopy, we directly link nanoscale structural transformations to changes in mechanical properties as probed through the coherence of the excited acoustic modes. Specifically, ultrafast pump–probe microscopy reveals an enhancement in the acoustic mode quality factor of annealed gold nanodisks, indicative of reduced damping and improved vibrational coherence. Structural characterization via scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction confirms that photoinduced annealing results in smoother surface morphology and overall enhanced crystallinity. The improved crystalline order reduces defect and crystal boundary scattering, which we suggest as the reason underlying the lower quality factor before annealing. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that targeted structural engineering at the nanoscale offers a powerful strategy for optimizing the optomechanical performance of plasmonic nanostructures, with broad implications for the design of next-generation nanophotonic and optomechanical systems.

Geodynamic laser ranging system laser transmitter

A description is given of the requirements and design options in the development of a spaceborne laser transmitter for NASA's Geodynamic Laser Ranging System. Three different oscillators are considered. The first is an injection-seeded ring oscillator yielding 1 mJ of energy within a 120-ps pulse. The second is a frequency-modulated mode-locked oscillator emitting 0.30 nJ in a 20-ps pulse. The third is a self-starting, additive pulse mode-locked laser. Detailed design considerations and preliminary results of these lasers are reported as well as the design of a unique multipass amplifier.
