A portable application framework for energy management and information systems (EMIS) solutions using Brick semantic schema

This paper introduces a portable framework for developing, scaling and maintaining energy management and information systems (EMIS) applications using an ontology-based approach. Key contributions include an interoperable layer based on Brick schema, the formalization of application constraints pertaining metadata and data requirements, and a field demonstration. The framework allows for querying metadata models, fetching data, preprocessing, and analyzing data, thereby offering a modular and flexible workflow for application development. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through a case study involving the development and implementation of a data-driven anomaly detection tool for the photovoltaic systems installed at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. During eight months of testing, the framework was used to tackle practical challenges including: (i) developing a machine learning-based anomaly detection pipeline, (ii) replacing data-driven models during operation, (iii) optimizing model deployment and retraining, (iv) handling critical changes in variable naming conventions and sensor availability (v) extending the pipeline from one system to additional ones.

Physical and dynamical characterization of hyperbolic comet C/2017 U7 (PANSTARRS)

Here we present here a dynamical and observational study of the comet C/2017 U7 (PANSTARRS). This comet was discovered in 2017 and found to have a hyperbolic orbit. Our dynamical analysis shows that the object has probably originated in the Oort cloud, however an interstellar origin cannot be discarded. The observations were obtained in 2018 and 2019 using the Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph (GHTS) at the SOAR telescope. We obtained visible spectra covering the wavelength range of 0.5 - 0.9 μm and also images in the SDSS filters system. Both the low-resolution reflectance spectrum and the reflectance spectra derived from the SDSS filters show an atypical band at ~ 0.595 μm. We conducted a comparative study of the colors and reflectance spectra of different small body populations (e.g., comets, Centaurs, and trans-Neptunian objects or TNOs) from the literature and concluded that the spectra and the colors of this comet are atypical, showing only some overlap with those of some known members of the TNOs and Centaurs, within the large uncertainties of the measurements of those populations. It is found that the feature and overall spectral shape can be reproduced by laboratory spectra of kerite, a template for aliphatic-rich hydrocarbons that has been previously identified in NIR cometary spectra absorptions. It is tentatively proposed that the unusual spectral shape is the result of a particle size distribution of dust grains in the coma or on the surface that has arisen due to a low grain ejection velocity from the surface and large nucleus size.

High tensile alloy of copper to mitigate current collector deformation in silicon electrodes for lithium-ion batteries

The volumetric changes of silicon electrodes, along with the strong adhesive properties of certain binders, can lead to plastic deformation of the current collector and create damage in the electrode coating. Here, in this study, we report a detailed study of silicon coatings on a high-tensile alloy (HTA) foil of copper with strength over twice that of conventional copper foils. The HTA current collectors with high mechanical strength can mitigate plastic deformation upon continuous cycling. At moderate areal capacities (2.5–3 mAh cm −2 ), conventional copper foils show significant wrinkling after only a few electrochemical cycles, whereas the HTA foils remain intact. We demonstrate viability of the HTA foils in large format xx6395 pouch cells, in which the HTA current collectors remain intact even at an areal capacity of 4.5 mAh cm −2 ; in contrast, wrinkles form in conventional copper current collectors increasing the likelihood of lithium plating. Computational studies show that stresses generated during cycling of silicon electrodes are very high in the current collector and at the current collector-coating interface, explaining the wrinkling of conventional Cu foils. Our studies highlight importance of current collector to solve the electrochemical and chemo-mechanical performance challenges associated with high-loading silicon electrodes.

A SiPM-based optical readout system for the EIC dual-radiator RICH

Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are candidates selected as the potential photodetector technology for the dual-radiator Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (dRICH) detector at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). SiPM are cheap devices, highly efficient and insensitive to the high magnetic field at the expected location of the sensors in the experiment. Here, on the other hand, SiPM are not radiation tolerant. Despite the integrated radiation level is expected to be moderate it should be tested whether single photon-counting capabilities and the increase in dark count rate can be kept under control to maintain the optimal dRICH detector performance across the years. The current status of the research for the EIC dRICH application and the first results on studies performed on a sample of commercial and prototype SiPM sensors are presented.

Parton distributions and lattice-QCD calculations: Toward 3D structure

The strong force which binds hadrons is described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Determining the character and manifestations of QCD is one of the most important and challenging outstanding issues necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the structure of hadrons. Within the context of the QCD parton picture, the parton distribution functions (PDFs) have been remarkably successful in describing a wide variety of processes. However, these PDFs have generally been confined to the description of collinear partons within the hadron. New experiments and facilities provide the opportunity to additionally explore the transverse structure of hadrons which is described by generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMD PDFs). In our previous report Lin et al. (2018), we compared and contrasted the two main approaches used to determine the collinear PDFs: the first based on perturbative QCD factorization theorems, and the second based on lattice-QCD calculations. In the present report, we provide an update of recent progress on the collinear PDFs, and also expand the scope to encompass the generalized PDFs (GPDs and TMD PDFs). We review the current state of the various calculations, and consider what new data might be available in the near future. We also examine how a shared effort can foster dialog between the PDF and lattice-QCD communities, and yield improvements for these generalized PDFs.

Aboveground biomass density models for NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) lidar mission

NASA's Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is collecting spaceborne full waveform lidar data with a primary science goal of producing accurate estimates of forest aboveground biomass density (AGBD). This paper presents the development of the models used to create GEDI's footprint-level (~25 m) AGBD (GEDI04_A) product, including a description of the datasets used and the procedure for final model selection. The data used to fit our models are from a compilation of globally distributed spatially and temporally coincident field and airborne lidar datasets, whereby we simulated GEDI-like waveforms from airborne lidar to build a calibration database. We used this database to expand the geographic extent of past waveform lidar studies, and divided the globe into four broad strata by Plant Functional Type (PFT) and six geographic regions. GEDI's waveform-to-biomass models take the form of parametric Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models with simulated Relative Height (RH) metrics as predictor variables. From an exhaustive set of candidate models, we selected the best input predictor variables, and data transformations for each geographic stratum in the GEDI domain to produce a set of comprehensive predictive footprint-level models. We found that model selection frequently favored combinations of RH metrics at the 98th, 90th, 50th, and 10th height above ground-level percentiles (RH98, RH90, RH50, and RH10, respectively), but that inclusion of lower RH metrics (e.g. RH10) did not markedly improve model performance. Second, forced inclusion of RH98 in all models was important and did not degrade model performance, and the best performing models were parsimonious, typically having only 1-3 predictors. Third, stratification by geographic domain (PFT, geographic region) improved model performance in comparison to global models without stratification. Fourth, for the vast majority of strata, the best performing models were fit using square root transformation of field AGBD and/or height metrics. There was considerable variability in model performance across geographic strata, and areas with sparse training data and/or high AGBD values had the poorest performance. These models are used to produce global predictions of AGBD, but will be improved in the future as more and better training data become available.

Spin-Selective Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Chiral Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Synergistic Impact of Inherent Magnetic Moment and Chirality

Electron spin polarization is identified as a promising avenue for enhancing the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is the bottleneck that limits the energy efficiency of water-splitting. Here, in this work, we report that both ferrimagnetic (f-Fe 3 O 4 ) and superparamagnetic iron oxide (s-Fe 3 O 4 ) catalysts can exhibit external magnetic field (Hext)-induced OER enhancement, and the activity is proportional to their intrinsic magnetic moment. Additionally, the chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect was utilized in synergy with Hext to get a maximum enhancement of up to 89% improvement in current density (at 1.8 V vs RHE) with a low onset potential of 270 mV in s-Fe 3 O 4 catalysts. Spin polarization and the resultant spin selectivity suppress the production of H 2 O 2 and promote the formation of ground state triplet O 2 during the OER. Furthermore, the design of chiral s-Fe 3 O 4 with synergistic spin potential effect demonstrates a high spin polarization of ∼42%, as measured using conductive atomic force microscopy (c-AFM).

Surprising Relationship between Silicon Anode Calendar Aging and Electrolyte Components in a Localized High-Concentration Electrolyte System

Although localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) have been shown to improve the calendar lifetime of silicon anodes, the roles of the electrolyte constituents in calendar aging are not well understood. Here, in this work, we utilize a voltage hold protocol and an LHCE with varying molar ratios of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), tetramethylene sulfone (TMS), and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) to probe the component roles during aging. Interestingly, the estimated calendar lifetime and irreversible lithium losses from the V-hold experiments are independent of the electrolyte formulations. Contrarily, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition depends on the electrolyte formulation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that TMS-coordinated species decompose to form insoluble alkanes and lithium hydroxide (LiOH), while lithium fluoride (LiF) originates from the anion-coordination complex. The SEI composition does not appear to play a significant role in the silicon anode passivity, as measured by parasitic current, suggesting that the SEI-electrolyte interactions dictate the calendar aging mechanisms.
