Large Bandwidth and Low Noise in a Diffusion-Cooled Hot-Electron Bolometer Mixer

X Heterodyne measurements have been made at 533 GHz using a novel superconducting hot-electron bolometer in a waveguide mixer. The bolometer is a 0.3 ??ong niobium microbridge with T c =(approx. equal to)5K. The short length ensures that electron diffusion dominates over electron-phonon interactions as the electron cooling mechanism, which should allow heterodyne detection with intermediate frequencies (if{italics})) of several GHz. A Y-factor response of 1.15dB has been obtained at an if(italics) of 1.4 GHz with 77k and 295k loads, indicating a receiver noise temperature of 650 k DSB. The -3 dB rolloff in the if(italics) response occurs at 1.7 GHz.

Optimal Choice of Material for HEB Superconducting Mixers

We demonstrate that a potential distinction in ultimate performance of phonon-cooled and diffusion-cooled HEB mixers is not due to the cooling mechanisms but rather due to the different properties of available superconductors.

Forward flight effects on mixer nozzle design and noise considerations for STOL externally blown flap systems

Experimental data of the peak axial-velocity decay in a moving airstream are presented for several types of nozzles. The nozzles include a six-tube mixer nozzle of a type considered for reduction of jet-flap interaction noise for externally-blown-flap STOL aircraft. The effect of secondary flow on the core flow velocity decay of a bypass nozzle is also discussed. Tentative correlation equations are suggested for the configurations evaluated. Recommendations for minimizing forward velocity effects on velocity decay and jet-flap interaction noise are made.

Noise measurements for various configurations of a model of a mixer nozzle externally blown flap system

Noise data were taken for variations to a large scale model of an externally blown flap lift augmentation system. The variations included two different mixer nozzles (7 and 8 lobes), two different wing models (2 and 3 flaps), and different lateral distances between the wing chord line and the nozzle centerline. When the seven lobe was used with the trailing flap in the 60 deg position, increasing the wing to nozzle distance had no effect on the sound level. When the eight lobe nozzle was used there was a decrease in sound level. With the 20 deg flap setting the noise level decreased when the distance was increased using either nozzle.

Digital single-sideband mixer.

Description of a simple single-sideband (SSB) mixer design that yields either a sum-frequency output with the difference-frequency output suppressed or vice-versa, and uses only 'digital' logic devices and no reactive or frequency-selective 'analog' (linear) circuit elements. A pair of outputs is generated in phase quadrature. It is shown that SSB frequency conversion can be accomplished for many applications much more efficiently with simple digital circuitry than in the usual way with complicated linear frequency selective filter and phasing circuits.

Ganged series potentiometer mixer networks

A ganged potentiometer with the interesting property of a constant 10k ohm or greater series impedance for all rotations of the shaft was rediscovered. The device provided a versatile passive mixer circuit when used with most signal sources and can be used as a variable series input summing resistor in operational amplifier networks. The potentiometer gave simple solutions to missing problems with a single control knob.

The 13.9 GHz short pulse radar noise figure measurements utilizing silicon and gallium-arsenide mixer diodes

An analysis was made on two commercially available silicon and gallium arsenide Schottky barrier diodes. These diodes were selected because of their particularly low noise figure in the frequency range of interest. The specified noise figure for the silicon and gallium arsenide diodes were 6.3 db and 5.3 db respectively when functioning as mixers in the 13.6 GHz region with optimum local oscillator drive.
