Double carbonates are minerals with a calcite type structure with alternating cation layers composed of Ca and Mg/Fe coordinated by carbonate groups. While the perfectly ordered AB-stacked crystal is the thermodynamically most stable configuration, natural mineral formation pathways can leave signatures through kinetically trapped disorder such as AB antisite cation substitutions. This study probes the degree of cation ordering in naturally occurring double carbonate samples.in particular, the distribution of Fe A and B crystallographic sites (A site is Ca layer and B site is Mg/Fe layer). Mössbauer, X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption fine structure (both X-ray absorption near edge structure, XANES, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure, EXAFS), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopies were used to collect a comprehensive experimental data set, which we interpret using density functional theory to elucidate the structural effects of cation disorder. Our results show that the A (nominally Ca) site can host a relatively high Fe fraction. We discuss the implications in terms of mineral formation.

Many utility companies in the United States have introduced time-of-use (TOU) rates for homeowners with the goal of regulating electricity consumption during peak hours. The electrical appliances in homes include various thermostatically controlled devices, such as air conditioners (AC) for thermal comfort, and nonthermostatically controlled devices such as clothes washers. As a result, homeowners face the complicated challenge of economically operating multiple electrical appliances in their homes while maintaining comfort and convenience. This is usually due to the lack of an explicit understanding of the correlation between cost saving and the users’ comfort. To understand the correlation, this article is designed to construct a framework by integrating three major components: a multi-objective optimization method accommodating multiple competing goals with different weights, a learning-based system modeling approach describing the dynamics and thermal coupling effects of appliances, and a novel comfort index method differentiating preferred and acceptable thermal comfort. Our proposed framework can allow the indoor air temperature to fall into the "preferred" range with a marginal cost increase. Furthermore, the simulation result shows that an additional 8 h for the preferred thermal comfort can be achieved with a cost increase of only 1.77%.
In the search for high-performance thermoelectrics, materials such as clathrates have drawn attention due to having both glasslike low phonon thermal conductivity and crystal-like high electrical conductivity. Ba 8 Ga 16 Ge 30 (BGG) has a loosely bound guest Ba atom trapped inside rigid Ga-Ge cage structures. Avoided crossings between acoustic phonons and the flat guest atom branches have been proposed to be the source of the low lattice thermal conductivity of BGG. Ga-Ge site disorder with Ga and Ge exchanging places in different unit cells has also been reported. We used time-of-flight neutron scattering to measure the complete phonon spectrum in a large single crystal of BGG and compared these results with predictions of density functional theory to elucidate the effect of the disorder on heat-carrying phonons. Experimental results agreed much better with the calculation assuming the disorder than with the calculation assuming the ordered configuration. Although the atomic masses of Ga and Ge are nearly identical, we found that disorder strongly reduces phonon group velocities, which significantly reduces thermal conductivity. Finally, our work points to a path towards optimizing thermoelectrics.
