Stationkeeping, Orbit Determination, and Attitude Control for Spacecraft in Near Rectilinear Halo Orbits

From a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO), NASA’s Gateway at the Moon is planned to serve as a proving ground and a staging location for human missions beyond Earth. Stationkeeping, Orbit Determination (OD), and attitude control are examined for uncrewed and crewed Gateway configurations. Orbit maintenance costs are investigated using finite maneuvers, considering skipped maneuvers and perturbations. OD analysis assesses DSN tracking and identifies OD challenges associated with the NRHO and crewed operations. The Gateway attitude profile is simulated to determine an effective equilibrium attitude. Attitude control propellant use and sizing of the required passive attitude control system are assessed.

Flux pinning concepts for on-orbit capture and orientation of an MSR orbiting sample container

Concepts for on-orbit capture and orientation of a Mars orbiting sample container (OS) using flux pinning were developed as candidate technologies for potential Mars Sample Return (MSR). The systems consist of a set of type-II superconductors field cooled below their critical temperature using a cryocooler, and operate on an orbiting sample container with a series of permanent magnets spaced around the exterior, along with an integrated layer of shielding to preserve the magnetic properties of the returned samples. Benefits of the approaches include passive, non-contact capture and orientation, as well as a reduction in the number of actuators relative to various mechanical methods.

Orbit Maintenance Burn Details for Spacecraft in a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit

The baseline orbit for Gateway is a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NRHO) in a 9:2 resonance with the lunar synodic period. A spacecraft in this slightly unstable NRHO requires orbit maintenance (OM) for long-duration operations. An updated OM algorithm is described, including a discussion of desirable OM burn location along the NRHO and the effects of changing weighting parameters and tolerances. The directions of the OM burns are explored in depth, both in the Earth-Moon rotating frame and from a Sun-relative perspective. A technique to augment the OM algorithm to enable long-term operations in NRHO is outlined, and the effects of constraints on OM attitudes are investigated.

Single Frequency GPS Orbit Determination for Low Earth Orbiters

A number of missions in the future are planning to use GPS for precision orbit determination. Cost considerations and receiver availability make single frequency GPS receivers attractive if the orbit accuracy requirements can be met.

Free Space Laser Communication Experiments from Earth to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in Lunar Orbit

Laser communication and ranging experiments were successfully conducted from the satellite laser ranging (SLR) station at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) in lunar orbit. The experiments used 4096-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) for the laser pulses during one-way LRO Laser Ranging (LR) operations. Reed-Solomon forward error correction codes were used to correct the PPM symbol errors due to atmosphere turbulence and pointing jitter. The signal fading was measured and the results were compared to the model.

Orbit Maintenance For Low Altitude Near-Circular Lunar Orbits

The behavior of low altitude near-circular lunar orbits is a key design issue for some missions in the proposed Space Exploration Initiative. The Lunar gravity field strongly perturbs low altitude orits, so an effective orbit maintenance strategy is needed.
