Ultra-thin photonic crystal slab metalenses [Invited]

We report a novel ultra-thin metalens design based on photonic crystal slab (PCS) resonance modes. We experimentally verified with a metalens structure based on amorphous silicon on a quartz material platform by implementing the optical guided resonance on the PCS. The PCS metalens designs feature an ultra-thin device layer of about 160 nm at an operation wavelength of 940 nm. A full 2π transmission phase transition is realized by varying the air hole sizes at the design wavelength. Metalens devices with different phase change gradients were designed and fabricated to achieve different NAs. A maximum of 86.4% focusing efficiency is achieved. Imaging capabilities are characterized, and clear images are observed within the field of view. The PC resonance-based phase modulation design can be applied to optical beam manipulation, phase plate design, imaging, and laser beam formation applications.

Circuit suppresses spurious sidebands

Circuitry requires modulated subcarrier to be split, part going to a phase modulator, and part going to a new circuit which utilizes a square law detector, a balanced mixer, and an amplifier to remove spurious sidebands. A summer recombines the two outputs, and final signal no longer includes spures.

Pseudonoise (PN) synchronization of data system with derivation of clock frequency from received signal for clocking receiver PN generator

A digital communicating system for automatically synchronizing signals for data detection is described. The systems consists of biphase modulating a subcarrier frequency by the binary data and transmitting a carrier phase modulated by this signal to a receiver, where coherent phase detection is employed to recover the subcarrier. Data detection is achieved by providing, in the receiver, a demodulated reference which is in synchronism with the unmodulated subcarrier in transmitting system. The output of the detector is passed through a matched filter where the signal is integrated over a bit period. As a result, random noise components are averaged out, so that the probability of detecting the correct data transmitted is maximized.

Determining the response of an FM receiver

Frequency response to frequency-modulation (FM) receiver is measured with aid of phase-modulation (PM) transmitter by applying correction to output power level. As modulating frequency is increased, output level obtained in response to PM input is reduced by 6 db per octane.

A method of obtaining signal components of residual carrier signal with their power content and computer simulation

A novel algorithm to obtain all signal components of a residual carrier signal with any number of channels is presented. The phase modulation type may be NRZ-L or split phase (Manchester). The algorithm also provides a simple way to obtain the power contents of the signal components. Steps to recognize the signal components that influence the carrier tracking loop and the data tracking loop at the receiver are given. A computer program for numerical computation is also provided.

Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

An efficient multiplexing approach for adaptive aircraft communications via a relay satellite.

Description of a coherent wide-angle multiplexing approach which is 4 to 8 dB more efficient in the utilization of satellite power as compared to a multicarrier transmission accessing a single TWT amplifier transponder. The wide-angle multiplexing approach achieves this performance by efficiently trading the modulation power improvement against backoff at the satellite earth terminal phase modulator. A simple addition of an amplitude clipper at the modulator input is critical to the proper operation of the system.

PLZT block data composers operated in differential phase mode

The use of a PLTZ block data composer as a matrix type phase modulator to record and process digital data by the differential phase mode in a holographic recording/processing system was investigated. The system has readout contrast ratios of between 10 and 15 to 1. The differential phase mode has the advantage that strain bias is not required and thickness and strain variations in the PLZT are cancelled out.

Phase-stepping fiber-optic projected fringe system for surface topography measurements

A projected fringe interferometer for measuring the topography of an object is presented. The interferometer periodically steps the phase angle between a pair of light beams emanating from a common source. The steps are pi/2 radians (90 deg) apart, and at each step a video image of the fringes is recorded and stored. Photodetectors measure either the phase and theta of the beams or 2(theta). Either of the measures can be used to control one of the light beams so that the 90 deg theta is accurately maintained. A camera, a computer, a phase controller, and a phase modulator established closed-loop control of theta. Measuring the phase map of a flat surface establishes a calibration reference.

Project Echo: 960-Megacycle, 10-Kilowatt Transmitter

A 10-kw transmitter operating at 960 to 961 Mc was used at the eastern terminus of the Project Echo communications experiment. This transmitter is located on Crawford's Hill near Holmdel, New Jersey. The 10-kw output feeds into a waveguide line leading to a 60-foot dish antenna. Exciter-driver units are available to drive the power amplifier with various modulations, such as wide-deviation FM, low-index phase modulation, single-sideband or double-sideband modulation with or without carrier, 960.05 or 961.05 Mc constant-frequency CW, and radar on-off pulses at 961.05 Mc. The main output amplifier consists primarily of a four-stage, externally-tuned-cavity, water-cooled klystron, operating at a beam voltage of 16 to 18 kv. The transmitter has been operated during many Moonbounce, tropospheric scatter, and Echo I tests with very satisfactory results. This paper describes its use before March 1, 1961.

Two-carrier command modulation system

Two carriers transmit two high-power signals from single transmitter, each phase-modulated by subcarrier which, in turn, is modulated by data bits; switching between two carriers is alternated at high rate. Resulting composite signal is multiplied up to desired frequency and used to drive power amplifier which feeds transmitting antenna.

Coherence properties of wideband satellite signals caused by ionospheric scintillation

Radio scintillation on satellite signals caused by small-scale irregularities in F-region ionospheric electron density can be an important limitation on earth-satellite communication and navigation systems. Scintillation imposes distortion in both amplitude and phase on wideband signals. In the present work, the shallow-modulated phase screen theory is developed in terms of coherence bandwidth including a model based on a turbulent-like power-law description of the irregularities. The model results usually show a greater coherence bandwidth in the signal phase than in the signal amplitude. Therefore, systems that require phase coherence over a large bandwidth should be less affected than those requiring amplitude coherence.

A hybrid voice/data modulation for the VHF aeronautical channels

A method of improving the spectral efficiency of the existing Very High Frequency (VHF) Amplitude Modulation (AM) voice communication channels is proposed. The technique is to phase modulate the existing voice amplitude modulated carrier with digital data. This allows the transmission of digital information over an existing AM voice channel with no change to the existing AM signal format. There is no modification to the existing AM receiver to demodulate the voice signal and an additional receiver module can be added for processing of the digital data. The existing VHF AM transmitter requires only a slight modification for the addition of the digital data signal. The past work in the area is summarized and presented together with an improved system design and the proposed implementation.

Performance characteristics for an array of two receiving systems with unequal predetection signal-to-noise ratios and enhanced radio frequency carrier margin improvement

Enhanced radio frequency carrier margin improvement for arrayed receiving systems for coherent reception of phase modulated signals with residual carrier provides a significant reduction in carrier loop phase noise and increase in signal to noise ratio in the RF carrier tracking loop with an attendant reduction in telemetry radio loss. A significant increase in Doppler frequency rate capability is also realized relative to operating at a narrower tracking loop bandwidth to obtain the same carrier sensitivity improvement. These performance characteristics are examined for an array of two receiving systems with unequal apertures and statistically independent predetection noise.

Performance of a Ka-band transponder breadboard for deep-space applications

This article summarizes the design concepts applied in the development of and advanced Ka-band (34.4 GHz/32 GHz) transponder breadboard for the next generation of space communications systems applications. The selected architecture upgrades the X-band (7.2 GHz/8.4 GHz) deep-space transponder (DST) to provide Da-band up/Ka- and X-band down capability. The Ka-band transponder breadboard incorporates several state-of-the-art components, including sampling mixers, a Ka-band dielectric resonator oscillator, and microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs). The MMICs that were tested in the breadboard include upconverters, downconverters, automatic gain control circuits, mixers, phase modulators, and amplifiers. The measured receiver dynamic range, tracking range, acquisition rate, static phase error, and phase jitter characteristics of the Ka-band breadboard interfaced to the advanced engineering model X-band DST are in good agreement with the expected performance. The results show a receiver tracking threshold of -149 dBm with a dynamic range of 80 dB and a downlink phase jitter of 7 deg rms. The analytical results of phase noise and Allan standard deviation are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Heterodyne readout for read-write holographic memories

A heterodyne readout technique for read-write holographic memory systems that reconstruct a virtual image wavefront is described and demonstrated. The conventionally recorded hologram is illuminated simultaneously with a suitable combination of temporally modulated reference and modified object waves for readout. Best performance is obtained for temporal phase modulation. The coupling of the illuminating wavefronts by the hologram is analyzed.
