Energy efficient engine pin fin and ceramic composite segmented liner combustor sector rig test report

Under the NASA-sponsored Energy Efficient Engine program, Pratt and Whitney has successfully completed a comprehensive test program using a 90-degree sector combustor rig that featured an advanced two-stage combustor with a succession of advanced segmented liners. Building on the successful characteristics of the first generation counter-parallel Finwall cooled segmented liner, design features of an improved performance metallic segmented liner were substantiated through representative high pressure and temperature testing in a combustor atmosphere. This second generation liner was substantially lighter and lower in cost than the predecessor configuration. The final test in this series provided an evaluation of ceramic composite liner segments in a representative combustor environment. It was demonstrated that the unique properties of ceramic composites, low density, high fracture toughness, and thermal fatigue resistance can be advantageously exploited in high temperature components. Overall, this Combustor Section Rig Test program has provided a firm basis for the design of advanced combustor liners.

Algebraic grid generation for coolant passages of turbine blades with serpentine channels and pin fins

In order to study numerically details of the flow and heat transfer within coolant passages of turbine blades, a method must first be developed to generate grid systems within the very complicated geometries involved. In this study, a grid generation package was developed that is capable of generating the required grid systems. The package developed is based on an algebraic grid generation technique that permits the user considerable control over how grid points are to be distributed in a very explicit way. These controls include orthogonality of grid lines next to boundary surfaces and ability to cluster about arbitrary points, lines, and surfaces. This paper describes that grid generation package and shows how it can be used to generate grid systems within complicated-shaped coolant passages via an example.

Pyrotechnic modeling for the NSI and pin puller

A discussion concerning the modeling of pyrotechnically driven actuators is presented in viewgraph format. The following topics are discussed: literature search, constitutive data for full-scale model, simple deterministic model, observed phenomena, and results from simple model.

A study of a multi-pinned phase CCD detector for use as a star tracker

This grant has supported studies of the use of charge coupled devices (CCD's) in star trackers in a number of different areas. Among the tasks we have pursued are the following: (1) radiation modeling and the increase in noise equivalent angle as a result of exposure to protons and bremsstrahlung gamma rays; (2) the development of pattern matching software to identify field locations from a CCD image and a pre-existing map of the local area; (3) observations of various stellar fields from the 24 inch telescope at the Offit Observatory at JHU, primarily to test the pattern matching software (these included crowded fields as well as moving objects, like comets); and (4) tracking of very faint objects to determine the faint limit of the CCD system.

Performance Enhancement Using Selective Reinforcement for Metallic Single- and Multi-Pin Loaded Holes

An analysis based investigation of aluminum with metal matrix composite selectively reinforced single- and multi-hole specimens was performed and their results compared with results from geometrically comparable non-reinforced specimens. All reinforced specimens exhibited a significant increase in performance. Performance increase of up to 170 percent was achieved. Specimen failure modes were consistent with results from reinforced polymeric matrix composite specimens. Localized reinforcement application (circular) proved as effective as a broader area (strip) reinforcement. Also, selective reinforcement is an excellent method of increasing the performance of multi-hole specimens.

Large-Format AlGaN PIN Photodiode Arrays for UV Images

A large-format hybridized AlGaN photodiode array with an adjustable bandwidth features stray-light control, ultralow dark-current noise to reduce cooling requirements, and much higher radiation tolerance than previous technologies. This technology reduces the size, mass, power, and cost of future ultraviolet (UV) detection instruments by using lightweight, low-voltage AlGaN detectors in a hybrid detector/multiplexer configuration. The solar-blind feature eliminates the need for additional visible light rejection and reduces the sensitivity of the system to stray light that can contaminate observations.

Magnetic Shield Design Modeling and Validation on SWOT Spacecraft Applied to Mars Flux Pinning Orbiting Sample Design

A modeling methodology was developed for use on the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission for the computational modeling and design of a magnetic shield for a 63 A-sq m source. Shield options were modeled and tested across various design parameters and validated with measurement. Measurement results fell within 10% of simulation in most cases of concern with sources of error well understood. These methods results informed a subsequent modeling activity for a future Mars Sample Return (MSR) mission concept with stringent magnetic cleanliness requirements to retain geologic integrity of the samples. One option for capturing the sample from orbit requires rare earth magnets in close proximity to the Martian samples. Magnetic modeling with a finite-element method solver estimated the magnetic environment and established the need for shielding. Further modeling then determined the shielding necessary to meet magnetic requirements, followed by the design of a mass-optimized solution.
