Overview of the NASA SETI Program

The NASA Search of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program plan is to scan the microwave window from 1 to 10 GHz with existing radio telescopes and sophisticated signal processing equipment looking for narrow band features that might represent artificial signals. A microwave spectrometer was built and is being field tested. A pattern recognition computer to search for drifting continuous wave signals and pulse trains in the output spectra is being designed. Equipment to characterize the radio frequency interference environment was also built. The plan is to complete the hardware and software by FY-88. Then, with increased funding, this equipment will be replicated in Very Large Scale Integration form. Observations, both a complete sky survey and a search fo nearby solar type stars, will begin in about 1990. The hypothesis that very powerful signals exist or that signals are being beamed at us will be tested. To detect the kinds of signals radiated at distances of 100 light years will require a collecting area kilometers in diameter.

Cotton-Fiber-Filled Rubber Insulation

Carbonization of fibers at high temperatures improves strength and erosion resistance. Cotton linters tested as replacement for asbestos filler currently used in rubber insulation in solid rocket motors. Cotton-filled rubber insulation has industrial uses; in some kinds of chemical- or metal-processing equipment, hoses, and protective clothing.

An overview of the Mark 4A monitor and control system

The Deep Space Network (DSN) Monitor and Control System was completely changed during the conversion from Mark 3 to the Mark 4A configuration. The configuration employs shared data processing equipment between several co-located antennas, and incorporates much greater centralization of operations functions. The configuration is described and its performance is compared to that of the Mark 3 era.

Environmental Control Life Support for the Space Station

The preliminary design of the nation's Space Station is presently being developed. The Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), consisting of regenerative and nonregenerative technologies, has progressed through a series of trade studies including evaluation of the closure and distribution within the evolutionary Space Station configuration. The analysis has included the identification of the time-critical functions, redundancy (backup) management, definition of common subsystem interfaces and quantification of technology options for the process equipment. Each technology has been characterized by its physical characteristics of weight, power, volume, heat rejection, etc. Summaries of the trade study findings for the overall ECLSS in terms of physical characteristics and the impact of selected technologies is presented.

Expert system prototype developments for NASA-KSC business and engineering applications

Prototype expert systems developed for a variety of NASA projects in the business/management and engineering domains are discussed. Business-related problems addressed include an assistant for simulating launch vehicle processing, a plan advisor for the acquisition of automated data processing equipment, and an expert system for the identification of customer requirements. Engineering problems treated include an expert system for detecting potential ignition sources in LOX and gaseous-oxygen transportation systems and an expert system for hazardous-gas detection.

Pilot Plant Makes Oxygen Difluoride

Pilot plant makes oxygen difluoride highly-energetic, space-storable oxidizer not made commercially. Designed to handle reactants, product, and byproduct, most of which highly reactive, corrosive, and toxic. Oxygen difluoride evolves continuously from reactor containing potassium hydroxide in water at 10 degree C. Collection tanks alternated; one filled while other drained to storage cylinder. Excess OF2 and F2 dissipated in combustion of charcoal in burn barrel. Toxic byproduct, potassium fluoride, reacted with calcium hydroxide to form nontoxic calcium fluoride and to regenerate potassium hydroxide. Equipment processes toxic, difficult-to-make substance efficiently and safely.

Development of an endoscopic probe for radial metrology

The goal of this work was to design and build a prototype for conducting stress analysis and making spectroscopic measurements inside cavities. The objectives were as follows: (1) to develop a prototype for radial profilometry; (2) to explore the possibility of using the radial profilometer for spectroscopic analysis; and (3) to interface the prototype with various combinations of data acquisition and image processing equipment.

Compounds Generate Optical Second Harmonics

Newly synthesized organic salts found to generate relatively large second-harmonic signals when illuminated by fundamental signals in near-infrared spectrum. Made by crystallizing, with appropriate counterions, organic ions having large molecular hyperpolarizibilities. Large second-order nonlinear susceptibilities observed. These and other compounds having large nonlinear optical properties used in electro-optical modulators, switches, and signal-processing equipment.

Laser Schlieren System Detects Sounds Of Leaks

Hostile environments monitored safely and noninvasively. Modified laser schlieren system acts as microphone to detect sounds of leaks remotely. Sensitive to acoustical frequencies above audible range and especially suited for monitoring leaks of high-pressure steam from boilers or chemical vapors from processing equipment. Does not require placement of delicate equipment in harsh environment monitored, and no contact needed with boiler or other unit being monitored. Detects sound waves via variation of index of refraction of air at acoustical frequencies. Used to monitor sound frequencies beyond range of human hearing.

Segmented Coil Fails In Steps

Electromagnetic coil degrades in steps when faults occur, continues to operate at reduced level instead of failing catastrophically. Made in segments connected in series and separated by electrically insulating barriers. Fault does not damage adjacent components or create hazard. Used to control valves in such critical applications as cooling systems of power generators and chemical process equipment, where flammable liquids or gases handled. Also adapts to electrical control of motors.

Bidirectional power converter control electronics

The object of this program was to design, build, test, and deliver a set of control electronics suitable for control of bidirectional resonant power processing equipment of the direct output type. The program is described, including the technical background, and results discussed. Even though the initial program tested only the logic outputs, the hardware was subsequently tested with high-power breadboard equipment, and in the testbed of NASA contract NAS3-24399. The completed equipment is now operating as part of the Space Station Power System Test Facility at NASA Lewis Research Center.

LBR-2 earth stations for the ACTS program

Described in this paper is the 'LBR-2' earth station being developed for NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). The LBR-2 is one of two earth station types that operate through the satellite's baseband processor. The LBR-2 is a small VSAT-like earth station that is easily sited on a user's premises, and provides up to 1.792 megabits per second (MBPS) of voice, video, and data communications. Addressed in the paper is the design of the antenna, the rf subsystems, the digital processing equipment, and the user interface equipment.

Altering Interline Transfer In A CCD To Reduce Saturation

In proposed interline-transfer timing scheme for charge-coupled-device (CCD) video imaging array, charges accumulated during some fraction of frame period swept out and dumped to prevent overloading and saturation in intensely illuminated photosites. Excess charges swept out at highest possible rate, while charges used for imaging read out at rate lower but was highest rate that provides complete transfer of charge on array and handled by subsequent signal-processing equipment.

Approaches to polymer-derived CMC matrices

The use of polymeric precursors to ceramics permits the fabrication of large, complex-shaped ceramic matrix composites (CMC's) at temperatures which do not degrade the fiber. Processing equipment and techniques readily available in the resin matrix composite industry can be adapted for CMC fabrication using this approach. Criteria which influence the choice of candidate precursor polymers, the use of fillers, and the role of fiber architecture and ply layup are discussed. Three polymer systems, polycarbosilanes, polysilazanes, and polysilsesquioxanes, are compared as candidate ceramic matrix precursors.
