Contrasting Capability of Single Atom Palladium for Thermocatalytic versus Electrocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Reaction

The occurrence of high concentrations of nitrate in various water resources is a significant environmental and human health threat, demanding effective removal technologies. Single atom alloys (SAAs) have emerged as a promising bimetallic material architecture in various thermocatalytic and electrocatalytic schemes including nitrate reduction reaction (NRR). This study suggests that there exists a stark contrast between thermocatalytic (T-NRR) and electrocatalytic (E-NRR) pathways that resulted in dramatic differences in SAA performances. Among Pd/Cu nanoalloys with varying Pd–Cu ratios from 1:100 to 100:1, Pd/Cu (1:100) SAA exhibited the greatest activity (TOF Pd = 2 min –1 ) and highest N 2 selectivity (94%) for E-NRR, while the same SAA performed poorly for T-NRR as compared to other nanoalloy counterparts. DFT calculations demonstrate that the improved performance and N 2 selectivity of Pd/Cu (1:100) in E-NRR compared to T-NRR originate from the higher stability of NO 3 * in electrocatalysis and a lower N 2 formation barrier than NH due to localized pH effects and the ability to extract protons from water. Here, this study establishes the performance and mechanistic differences of SAA and nanoalloys for T-NRR versus E-NRR.

Xenon–metal pair formation in UO 2 investigated using DFT + U

A recent experimental study on a spent uranium dioxide (UO 2 ) fuel sample from Belgium Reactor 3 identified a unique pair structure formed by the noble metal phase (NMP) and fission gas [xenon (Xe)] precipitate. However, the fundamental mechanism behind this structure remains unclear. The present study aims to provide an understanding of the interaction between five different metal precipitates [molybdenum (Mo), ruthenium (Ru), palladium (Pd), technetium (Tc), and rhodium (Rh)] and the Xe fission gas atoms in UO 2 , by using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with the Hubbard U correction to compute the formation energies involved. All DFT + U calculations were performed with occupation matrix control to ensure antiferromagnetic ordering of UO 2 . The calculated formation and binding energies of the Xe and solid fission products in the NMP reveal that these metal precipitates form stable pair structures with Xe. Notably, the formation energy of Xe–metal pairs is lower than that of the isolated single defects in all instances, with Pd and Mo showing the most favorable binding energy, likely accounting for the observed pair structure formation.

First-principles calculation of lattice distortions in four single phase high entropy alloys with experimental validation

Exceptional properties of high entropy alloys (HEAs) are attributed to the disordered random solid solution of multiple alloying elements. Despite numerous studies, the fundamental understanding at the electronic and atomic levels is still missing. We report a comparative study of four fcc HEAs of NiFeCoCr and NiFeCoCrX (X = Mn, Cu, or Pd) based on ab initio calculations using large supercells with 500 atoms in equal composition. After fully optimizing their structures using the VASP package, their electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, and mechanical properties are calculated and compared, revealing the intricate interdependence among them. A novel parameter based on the quantum mechanical metric for internal cohesion, the total bond order density (TBOD), is used to interpret the calculated properties. The highest TBOD is found in Cantor alloy NiFeCoCrMn but lower in NiFeCoCrPd. The atomic radii vary depending on their local chemical environment. The resulting lattice distortions is validated experimentally in NiFeCoCrMn and NiFeCoCrPd. Moreover, modeling of Cu and Pd clustering in the supercell shows they have lower total energy in agreement with the observation of Cu-enhanced nano-participates in NiFeCoCrCu and Pd-induced concentration wave in NiFeCoCrPd HEAs.

Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.

What is the Best Alternative to Diagonalization of the Hamiltonian in Large Scale Semiempirical Calculations?

Recently, several linear scaling approaches have been introduced which replace the time dominating diagonalization step in semiempirical methods, enabling practical calculations to be performed, on very large molecules. This paper compares the accuracy and performance of pseudodiagonalization (PD), conjugate gradient density matrix search (CG-DMS), the Chebyshev polynomial expansion method (CEM), and purification of the density matrix (PDM) as linear scaling substitutions for diagonalization. The scaling, speed, and reliability of these methods are compared for AMI single point energy calculations on polyglycine chains (up to 20,000 atoms), water clusters (up to 12,300 atoms), and nucleic acids (up to 6300 atoms).
