Experimental clean combustor program: Phase 3: Turbulence measurement addendum

Airflow turbulence parameters were measured in the high pressure, high temperature flow stream leaving the compressor of an operating gas turbine engine. A water cooled hot film turbulence probe was used to determine the turbulence intensity and length scale in the compressor exit flow stream of the CF6-50 engine. Data were obtained only at idle operating conditions. At engine power levels above idle conditions, durability problems and erratic data readings were encountered with the turbulence measurement probes. Turbulence measurements were made at three radial immersions at a point 15.5 cm downstream of the compressor outlet guide vanes in the compressor exit diffuser. The passage height at this point is 5.54 cm. Data reduction was accomplished with a time-data fast Fourier transform (FFT) system. This system finds the power spectral density distribution (PSD) of a large number of data samples using a direct Fourier transform algorithm and finds the autocorrelation parameter for these data by doing an FFT analysis of the PSD curves for a series of time delay intervals.

Conceptual approach study 200 watt per kilogram solar array, phase 3

Activities are described that were directed by JPL to support the earlier conceptual design work with proof of concept models on the one hand, and laboratory test and evaluation of alternate designs and materials that hold promise for further mass economies, on the other. In support of this advanced solar blanket technology the following work was accomplished: (1) preparation of an 80 cell solar module for a 1000 cycle thermal test (2) fabrication of a 660 cell solar panel and performance evaluation of this article after a '0' g flight test, (3) design improvement of the cell interconnect for further mass reduction, (4) completion of UV exposure and thermal cycle tests for a variety of cell cover material and adhesives and (5) preparation of a quantity of representative solar array test specimens for space flight on NASA's Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF).

Silicon ingot casting: Heat exchanger method. Multi-wire slicing: Fixed abrasive slicing technique, phase 3

In the area of ingot casting the proof of concept of heat exchanger method (HEM) was established. It was also established that HEM cast silicon yielded solar cell performance comparable to Czochralski grown material. Solar cells with conversion efficiencies of up to 15% were fabricated. It was shown that square cross-section ingots can be cast. In the area of crystal slicing, it was established that silicon can be sliced efficiently with the fixed abrasive slicing technique approach. This concept was carried forward to 10 cm diameter workpiece.

Experimental clean combustor program, phase 3: Noise measurement addendum

The acoustic characteristics of the double annular combustor in a CF6-50 high bypass turbofan engine were investigated. Internal fluctuating pressure measurements were made in the combustor region and in the core exhaust. The transmission loss across the turbine and nozzle was determined from the measurements and compared to previous component results and present theory. The primary noise source location in the combustor was investigated. Spectral comparisons of test rig results were made with the engine results. The measured overall power level was compared with component and engine correlating parameters.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). First interim phase 3 evaluation report

The author has identified the following significant results. LACIE acreage estimates were in close agreement with SRS estimates, and an operational system with a 14 day LANDSAT data turnaround could have produced an accurate acreage estimate (one which satisfied the 90/90 criterion) 1 1/2 to 2 months before harvest. Low yield estimates, resulting from agromet conditions not taken into account in the yield models, caused production estimates to be correspondingly low. However, both yield and production estimates satisfied the LACIE 90/90 criterion for winter wheat in the yardstick region.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). LACIE third interim phase 3 accuracy assessment report

The author has identified the following significant results. An accuracy of 90/85 was achieved with the October estimates which had a relative bias of -9.9 percent and a coefficient of variation of 5.2 percent for the total wheat production in the USGP. The probability was 0.9 that the LACIE estimate was within + or - 15 percent of true wheat production for the USGP. The LACIE spring wheat production underestimates in August, September, and October were the results of area underestimates for spring wheat in the USNGP region. The winter wheat blind study showed that the average proportion estimates were significantly different from the average dot-count, ground truth proportions at the USSGP and USGP-7 levels.

Evaluation of Selected Chemical Processes for Production of Low-cost Silicon, Phase 3

Refinements of the design of the 50 MT/year Experimental Process System Development Unit were made and competitive bids were received from mechanical, electrical, and structural contractors. Bids on most of the equipment were received and cataloged. Emergency procedures were defined to counter a variety of contingencies disclosed in operations and safety reviews. Experimental work with an electrolytic cell for zinc chloride disclosed no significant increase in power efficiency by steps taken to increase electrolyte circulation. On the basis of materials compatibility and permeability tests, 310 stainless steel was chosen for the shell of the fluidized-bed reactor and SiC-coated graphite for the liner.

Experimental clean combustor program: Diesel no. 2 fuel addendum, phase 3

A CF6-50 engine equipped with an advanced, low emission, double annular combustor was operated 4.8 hours with No. 2 diesel fuel. Fourteen steady-state operating conditions ranging from idle to full power were investigated. Engine/combustor performance and exhaust emissions were obtained and compared to JF-5 fueled test results. With one exception, fuel effects were very small and in agreement with previously obtained combustor test rig results. At high power operating condition, the two fuels produced virtually the same peak metal temperatures and exhaust emission levels. At low power operating conditions, where only the pilot stage was fueled, smoke levels tended to be significantly higher with No. 2 diesel fuel. Additional development of this combustor concept is needed in the areas of exit temperature distribution, engine fuel control, and exhaust emission levels before it can be considered for production engine use.

SAMICS Validation. SAMICS Support Study, Phase 3

SAMICS provides a consistent basis for estimating array costs and compares production technology costs. A review and a validation of the SAMICS model are reported. The review had the following purposes: (1) to test the computational validity of the computer model by comparison with preliminary hand calculations based on conventional cost estimating techniques; (2) to review and improve the accuracy of the cost relationships being used by the model: and (3) to provide an independent verification to users of the model's value in decision making for allocation of research and developement funds and for investment in manufacturing capacity. It is concluded that the SAMICS model is a flexible, accurate, and useful tool for managerial decision making.

Evaluation of Selected Chemical Processes for Production of Low-cost Silicon, Phase 3

The construction of the 50 MT Si/year experimental process system development unit was deferred until FY 1980, and the fluidized bed, zinc vaporizer, by-product condenser, and electrolytic cell were combined with auxiliary units, capable of supporting 8-hour batchwise operation, to form the process development unit (PDU), which is scheduled to be in operation by October 1, 1979. The design of the PDU and objectives of its operation are discussed. Experimental program support activities described relate to: (1) a wetted-wall condensor; (2) fluidized-bed modeling; (3) zinc chloride electrolysis; and (4) zinc vaporizer.

Silicon Ingot Casting - Heat Exchanger Method Multi-wire Slicing - Fixed Abrasive Slicing Technique. Phase 3 Silicon Sheet Growth Development for the Large Area Sheet Task of the Low-cost Solar Array Project

Several 20 cm diameter silicon ingots, up to 6.3 kg. were cast with good crystallinity. The graphite heat zone can be purified by heating it to high temperatures in vacuum. This is important in reducing costs and purification of large parts. Electroplated wires with 45 um synthetic diamonds and 30 um natural diamonds showed good cutting efficiency and lifetime. During slicing of a 10 cm x 10 cm workpiece, jerky motion occurred in the feed and rocking mechanisms. This problem is corrected and modifications were made to reduce the weight of the bladeheat by 50%.
