Zonal magnetic fields regulate nonlinear edge-localized-mode dynamics via self-consistent force balance

Edge-localized modes (ELMs) eject intense bursts of heat and particles that threaten plasma-facing components in fusion reactors. Nonlinear full-torus BOUT++ simulations show that turbulence-driven zonal magnetic fields (ZMFs) play an essential role in nonlinear ELM evolution by maintaining self-consistent force balance. Zonal flows mitigate the initial crash through shear but do not prevent continued radial transport. When ZMFs are self-consistently included, turbulence-driven zonal currents modify the parallel current distribution and magnetic tension and are associated with a reduction of the axisymmetric (𝑛 = 0) perturbed radial force imbalance. This coincides with a transition from convective, bursty propagation to more localized, diffusive transport. Similar behavior is observed across the regimes considered, including both resistive-ballooning and peeling-ballooning cases. Finally, associated signatures, including radial electric field shear and parallel current redistribution, provide experimentally accessible diagnostics for present devices and ITER-relevant conditions.

Evidence of nonlinear coupling in the edge harmonic oscillation sustaining quiescent high confinement in a tokamak plasma

In a tokamak plasma, we measure nonlinear coupling between harmonics comprising a saturated edge oscillation, as predicted by nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The coherent structure formed by this coupling suppresses bursty edge-localized modes that cause energy and particle loss. We also measure nonlinear coupling of the edge harmonic oscillation to core-resonant magnetic tearing modes. When tearing modes are present, the edge oscillation harmonics decouple, and edge-localized modes return. In this article, we conclude that nonlinear interaction with tearing modes interrupts the formation of the edge harmonic oscillation.

Deep Koopman Neural Network for Analyzing High-Energy-Density Simulations of Electrical Wire Explosions

Megaampere-scale electrical wire experiments (EWEs) provide a platform for studying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instability growth in magneto-inertial fusion (MIF) devices. Even when nonlinear simulations of these experiments can digitally reproduce much of the experimentally observed instability growth, interpreting the results and understanding mode growth and evolution can be non-trivial. As a first step toward providing better interpretation of these simulation features, this work investigates the use of a deep neural network that uses Koopman operator theory to analyze the dynamics of pulsed-power-driven explosions of EWEs. This deep neural network is trained on 1-D resistive MHD simulations of EWEs. This neural network learns to transform the nonlinear data into a lower-dimensional representation where the time dynamics are linear. Layers of this neural network are shown to learn features of the simulations, including the locations of shock waves and different physical regimes of the simulation. Using the learned features, the network can compress a time state of the simulation consisting of 5120 data point into a 36-parameter lower-dimensional latent space embedding. Furthermore, these embeddings are shown to be clustered in the latent space by initial radius and time state.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of bulk and plasma-sprayed y2O3-partially stabilized zirconia

Bulk 8.0 weight percent yttria partially stabilied zirconia (PSZ) was studied by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, microhardness testing, and fracture toughness testing. The as received PSZ contained spheroidal and grain boundary precipitates up to 4 micrometers in size. Spheroids up to 1.26 micrometers were metastable tetragonal; large spheroids were monoclinic. Grinding the PSZ into powder did not cause a significant amount of tetragonal to transform to monoclinic. This indicates that transformation toughness is not a significant mechanism in PSZ. Aging the PSZ at 1500 C caused the fine tetragonal precipitates to grow from 0.06 to 0.12 micrometers, in 250 minutes. A peak hardness of 1400 kg/sq mm was attained after 50 minutes. Solution annealing and quenching the as received PSZ eliminated the large precipitates, but fine tetragonal precipitates reformed on quenching. Aging at 1500 C caused the fine 0.02 micrometers tetragonal precipitates to grow into plates about 0.10 by 0.50 micrometers. A peak hardness of 1517 kg/sq mm was obtained after 250 minutes. On further aging, monoclinic percipitates formed along grain boundaries. The fracture toughness of the aged and unaged solution annealed and quenched PSZ was found to be between 2 and 3 MN /square root of m cubed. This range of fracture toughness is consistent with PSZ's that do not undergo transformation toughening.

The condensational instability in the solar transition region and corona

The stability of plasmas at temperatures and densities typical of the solar transition region and corona is investigated using both a linear analysis and nonlinear time-dependent numerical simulations. Growth rates, decay rates, and oscillation frequencies of the perturbations determined from the linear analysis are in excellent agreement with the simulations. The nonlinear regime is characterized by a bifurcation of the plasma into a cool dense condensation surrounded by a hot tenuous corona. The condensation may then be accelerated by forces in the plasma such as those arising from gravity or differential heating. Finally, the results of the detailed simulation show that the transition region is a dynamically stable structure which is the result of the nonlinear evolution of the condensational instability.
