Retrofit & Expansion Project at Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Plant: Completing a Full Domestic Supply Chain for Lithium-Ion Batteries (Final Scientific and Technical Report)

The UTEC-1 LIBS Retrofit and Expansion Project aimed to retrofit and expand Braskem’s UHMWPE unit in La Porte, TX to produce lithium-ion battery separator (LIBS) grade material and increase capacity. The project sought to strengthen the domestic supply chain for advanced battery manufacturing and reduce reliance on imports. While significant progress was achieved in conceptual design and FEL-2 engineering, strategic realignment and external factors led to project termination prior to FEL-3 and FEED execution.

Diffusion across the modified polyethylene separator GX in the heat-sterilizable AgO-Zn battery

Models of diffusion across an inert membrane have been studied using the computer program CINDA. The models were constructed to simulate various conditions obtained in the consideration of the diffusion of Ag (OH)2 ions in the AgO-Zn battery. The effects on concentrations across the membrane at the steady state and on the fluxout as a function of time were used to examine the consequences of stepwise reducing the number of sources of ions, of stepwise blocking the source and sink surfaces, of varying the magnitude of the diffusion coefficient for a uniform membrane, of varying the diffusion coefficient across the membrane, and of excluding volumes to diffusion.

Laminated thermoplastic composite material from recycled high density polyethylene

The design of a materials-science, educational experiment is presented. The student should understand the fundamentals of polymer processing and mechanical property testing of materials. The ability to use American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards is also necessary for designing material test specimens and testing procedures. The objectives of the experiment are (1) to understand the concept of laminated composite materials, processing, testing, and quality assurance of thermoplastic composites and (2) to observe an application example of recycled plastics.

Long duration biaxial cylinder testing of balloon grade polyethylene films with emphasis on automated data acquisition and control

Characterization of a 2-dimensional material constitutive model in the practical biaxial state for engineering utility of balloon envelope structural analysis is achievable with laboratory cylinder tests. Hoop (circumferential, and longitudinal strains are time-wise measured on axially loaded pressurized cylinders. Pre-programmed ramped loading changes as well as precise long term pressure control are achieved through cascaded proportional, integral derivative (PID) flow control loops that are part of an integrated data acquisition and process control system. Real time data reduction and analysis allow monitoring of unattended tests that have durations of up to a month. Measured and controlled parameters and variables are discussed; date analysis techniques are reviewed.

The Investigation of 6mu Biaxially Oriented Polyethylene 2, 6, -Naphthalate As a Possible Dielectric For Pulse Power Capacitors

The introduction of polythylene -2, 6-Naphthalate (PEN) semicrystalline film with thicknesses of 0.9mu, 1.5mu, 4.0Mu and community. Its unique chemical and high temparterure stability, as well as superior thermo-mechanical properties allow ultra thin ( 2mu) PEN film to be processed into miniature multilayer chip capacitors for surface mount technology (SMT) application that can be used with standard soldering techniques.
