Design of a Non-Invasive Laser-based Beam Profile Monitor System for the New Fermilab PIP-II Superconducting H- Linac

As part of the new Proton Improvement Plan (PIP-II), Fermilab is undertaking the development of a new 800 MeV, 2 mA H- superconducting RF linac to replace its present normal conducting 400 MeV linac. The PIP-II linac consists of a series of superconducting RF cryomodules from 2.1 MeV to 800 MeV. To limit the potential damage to the superconducting RF cavities, PIP-II will utilize non-invasive laser-based monitors (laserwires) to obtain beam profiles via photoionization. This paper will present the design of this PIP-II laserwire system including the picosecond pulsed laser, optical transport line, 13 individual laserwire stations, laser feedback and timing controls.

Real-time Electron Temperature and Density Profile Measurements for NSTX-U

This project set out to design, build, and deploy a real-time multi-point Thomson scattering (rt MPTS) system for NSTX-U, capable of providing electron temperature and density profiles—and their uncertainties—in real time for use in equilibrium reconstruction and plasma control. The long-term goal was to move Thomson scattering from a purely post-shot diagnostic to a central element of real-time situation awareness and feedback control on NSTX-U.

Impact of the Earth’s Density Profile on Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations

As atmospheric neutrinos traverse the Earth, the matter potential influences their oscillation probabilities in intricate ways, enhancing and suppressing the conversion of one neutrino’s flavor to another along the propagation. Comprehending their behavior within Earth’s complex density profile, primarily described by the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) [1], is essential for accurately describing oscillations and determining expected atmospheric neutrino event rates in the DUNE Far Detector. In this study, we address this challenge by considering an ensemble of Earth models constrained by astronomical measurements of the planet’s mass and moment of inertia. We evaluate how variations in densities and layer boundaries can affect oscillation probabilities and event rates, and what implications this could have on various physics analyses.

Bioaerosol Profiling with Open Path Sensors (BIOPOP) Field Campaign Report

BIOPOP, Bioaerosol Profiling with Open Path Sensors, was designed to characterize coarse and super-coarse biological aerosol particles in the atmospheric boundary layer using the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility’s tethered balloon system (TBS). The campaign period was 2025-05-28 through 2025-08-31 and involved the third ARM Mobile Facility (AMF3) operations at Bankhead National Forest (BNF) in Alabama. The analysis summarized here focuses on the June and August 2025 BNF intensive operating periods (IOPs).

Accuracy and Resolution Evaluation of the E-Beam Profile Scanner at the Fermilab Main Injector

The objective of this work is to assess the accuracy of measurements made by the Electron Beam Profile Scanner (EBPS), which captures the trajectory of an electron beam with and without a proton beam present. The proton beam induces deflection in the electron beam, which is influenced by proton charges. For high-resolution images, the probe beam needs to be of high intensity, small diameter, and small divergence, evaluated using a phosphor screen and an optical transition radiation (OTR) screen. The capabilities of the Kimball Physics electron gun (eGun) will be considered for accuracy. Additionally, the Zemax software will be utilized to characterize the optical elements.

WFIP3 - SHIP site - NREL Profiling Lidar (Windcube v2.1) / Reviewed data

This dataset contains reviewed data from the profiling lidar (Windcube v2.1) deployed on WFIP3's SHIP. The reviewed files herein are based on the lidar's RTD files (i.e., the real-time raw data files at near 1 Hz resolution). The data have been corrected for the motion of the ship.
