NRAP-Open-IAM: Open Wellbore Component (V.2.0)

The Open Wellbore component of NRAP-Open-IAM is applicable to the calculation of Area of Review at a carbon storage site and fast estimation of dense gas dispersion from multiple continuous CO 2 surface leakage sources for risk assessment. The Open Wellbore Component of NRAP-Open-IAM is a lookup table model based on the drift-flux approach. The National Research Assessment Partnership’s second-generation integrated assessment model, NRAP-Open-IAM, is open-source software written in Python for use in performance and quantitative risk assessment of geologic carbon storage (GCS) systems. The look-up table for open well leakage is an updated version the previous model which provides finer resolution of reservoir depth and more accurate fluid properties than the previous open well look-up table, especially in calculating the gas (CO 2 -rich) phase properties. The component model input parameters include the reservoir transmissivity, aquifer transmissivity, brine salinity, well radius, and well top and bottom depths. The reservoir transmissivity and brine salinity were set to values consistent with the reservoir component, and the well top and bottom depths varied with location. The possible outputs from the Open Wellbore component are leakage rates of CO 2 and brine to either an aquifer or atmosphere, depending on the depth of the well top. Several python test scripts are presented that demonstrate that the Open Wellbore component works correctly. Use of the open wellbore model in NRAP-Open-IAM may result in a large CO 2 leakage rates, comparable to the leakage rates of CO 2 blow out.

Modeling of the Advanced Test Reactor Using OpenMC, Cubit and Griffin

In the pursuit of the ability to perform multiphysics simulations of the Advanced Test Reactor, it is crucial to have a fast and highly accurate deterministic model. To achieve this, a contemporary two-step method is employed. The first step involves generating homogenized cross sections using OpenMC, a cutting-edge Monte Carlo neutron transport code. OpenMC offers excellent modular capabilities, allowing for easy component integration and flexibility in incorporating new designs into the model. The second step involves deterministic transport calculations, which are performed using Griffin, a reactor multiphysics application based on the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment. To ensure the accurate spatial resolution and assignment of material cross sections, a Cubit-generated mesh for the Advanced Test Reactor is utilized as an intermediate step between the OpenMC and Griffin models; Griffin utilizes the mesh for its finite element solution, while OpenMC material IDs are written to the mesh file to be used in Griffin material assignments. Additionally, a Python-based script converts the cross sections generated by OpenMC into the ISOXML format required by Griffin. Preliminary comparisons indicate good agreement between the neutron multiplication factors obtained from the standalone OpenMC model and the Griffin model, with differences of less than 50 pcm in the two-dimensional geometry configuration. However, in three-dimensional calculations, an unacceptably large error is found in the Griffin solution. Future work is planned to resolve this discrepancy.

Open-Source Data Engineering at NASA: CCMC's Approach to Managing Petabyte-Scale Heliophysics Data

The Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) leads heliophysics research by providing open access to numerous models and their outputs. Our resources are available on-demand and continuously updated with real-time data, covering sun-earth interactions across multiple domains. These domains include coronal, heliosphere, inner and global magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and lower atmosphere interactions. Operating in a hybrid environment, CCMC utilizes both self-owned hardware and Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. Managing petabytes of data across multiple locations necessitates robust data engineering solutions. To address this challenge, CCMC has adopted industry-standard and open-source tools. We use Apache Airflow as our primary data engineering platform, Python for scripting and data processing, and GitLab for version control and CI/CD. Additionally, we employ Kubernetes for containerized services, Grafana and Prometheus for metrics and monitoring, and Terraform and Puppet for reproducible infrastructure as code. This presentation will discuss lessons learned from our data engineering experiences, platforms evaluated but found unsuitable for our scientific data requirements, and specific techniques developed to enhance data transfer speed and reliability. By using these technologies effectively, CCMC continues to advance heliophysics research through efficient data management and open-access modeling.

Evaluation of a Reduced-Order Model for IBR Fault Response Representation via OEM Blackbox Models: Preprint

Driven by the need to capture the electromagnetic transients of transmission lines, inverter switching behavior, and detailed control systems, electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies have become increasingly important in industry, such as IBR interconnection study and fault study. However, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) inverter models typically include extensive parameters and proprietary settings that are unavailable to protection engineers. This paper introduces a data-driven, reduced-order model (ROM) developed as a PSCAD library component for use in EMT-based fault studies. The ROM replicates key OEM model behaviors without requiring detailed knowledge of control design or parameterization. The accompanying Python automation scripts streamline data generation, parameter fitting, and validation. The ROM's performance is demonstrated through comparison with both IEEE 2800-compliant and non-compliant OEM models in a real-world power system. Relay responses show nearly identical results, while simulation runtime is reduced by an average of 32.8\%, highlighting the ROM's practicality for protection engineers.

Classification of Ultrasonic Weld Quality using Acoustic Signatures Acquired During Manufacture

Ultrasonic welding is a process is based on generating a solid-state bond between two metals by applying moderate pressure and high intensity sound waves (20-70 kHz frequencies) at their interface. During the solid-state process numerous material, surface, instrument, and environmental factors contribute to bond formation, strength, and durability. The inherent difficulty of measuring and controlling each of these factors has, to date, made predicting bond quality elusive. In this work, a Sonics model MWB20 ultrasonic spot welder with integral base, was used to produce a variety of welds of different metal foils under varying weld conditions. Acoustic measurements were recorded throughout the measurement process. Subsequent analysis of the signals using metrics that approximate the energy dispersed during the weld proved to successfully predict weld quality. Two metrics based on normalized energy differential and Renyi entropy were developed into Python and C++ scripts for direct analysis of weld acoustic data.
