Advanced Signal Processing Techniques Applied to Terahertz Inspections on Aerospace Foams

The space shuttle's external fuel tank is thermally insulated by the closed cell foams. However, natural voids composed of air and trapped gas are found as by-products when the foams are cured. Detection of foam voids and foam de-bonding is a formidable task owing to the small index of refraction contrast between foam and air (1.04:1). In the presence of a denser binding matrix agent that bonds two different foam materials, time-differentiation of filtered terahertz signals can be employed to magnify information prior to the main substrate reflections. In the absence of a matrix binder, de-convolution of the filtered time differential terahertz signals is performed to reduce the masking effects of antenna ringing. The goal is simply to increase probability of void detection through image enhancement and to determine the depth of the void.

Low power, compact charge coupled device signal processing system

A variety of charged coupled devices (CCDs) for performing programmable correlation for preprocessing environmental sensor data preparatory to its transmission to the ground were developed. A total of two separate ICs were developed and a third was evaluated. The first IC was a CCD chirp z transform IC capable of performing a 32 point DFT at frequencies to 1 MHz. All on chip circuitry operated as designed with the exception of the limited dynamic range caused by a fixed pattern noise due to interactions between the digital and analog circuits. The second IC developed was a 64 stage CCD analog/analog correlator for performing time domain correlation. Multiplier errors were found to be less than 1 percent at designed signal levels and less than 0.3 percent at the measured smaller levels. A prototype IC for performing time domain correlation was also evaluated.

The design and development of signal-processing algorithms for an airborne x-band Doppler weather radar

Improved measurements of precipitation will aid our understanding of the role of latent heating on global circulations. Spaceborne meteorological sensors such as the planned precipitation radar and microwave radiometers on the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) provide for the first time a comprehensive means of making these global measurements. Pre-TRMM activities include development of precipitation algorithms using existing satellite data, computer simulations, and measurements from limited aircraft campaigns. Since the TRMM radar will be the first spaceborne precipitation radar, there is limited experience with such measurements, and only recently have airborne radars become available that can attempt to address the issue of the limitations of a spaceborne radar. There are many questions regarding how much attenuation occurs in various cloud types and the effect of cloud vertical motions on the estimation of precipitation rates. The EDOP program being developed by NASA GSFC will provide data useful for testing both rain-retrieval algorithms and the importance of vertical motions on the rain measurements. The purpose of this report is to describe the design and development of real-time embedded parallel algorithms used by EDOP to extract reflectivity and Doppler products (velocity, spectrum width, and signal-to-noise ratio) as the first step in the aforementioned goals.

Detection and Signal Processing for Near-Field Nanoscale Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

Researchers from a broad spectrum of scientific and engineering disciplines are increasingly using scattering-type near-field infrared spectroscopic techniques to characterize materials non-destructively with nanoscale spatial resolution. However, a sub-optimal understanding of a technique's implementation can complicate data interpretation and act as a barrier to entering the field. Here the key detection and processing steps involved in producing scattering-type near-field nanoscale Fourier transform infrared spectra (nano-FTIR) are outlined. The self-contained mathematical and experimental work derives and explains: i) how normalized complex-valued nano-FTIR spectra are generated, ii) why the real and imaginary components of spectra qualitatively relate to dispersion and absorption respectively, iii) a new and generally valid equation for spectra which can be used as a springboard for additional modeling of the scattering processes, and iv) an algebraic expression that can be used to extract an approximation to the sample's local extinction coefficient from nano-FTIR. The algebraic model for weak oscillators is validated with nano-FTIR and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectra on samples of polystyrene and Kapton and further provides a pedagogical pathway to cementing some of the technique's key qualitative attributes.

Lightweight Embedded Controller in Advanced FPGA SoC for Radar Signal Processing [Poster]

The objective of the project is to demonstrate that critical control functions can be implemented using little resources in modern microelectronics. A finite state machine (Figure 1) is implemented onto a field programmable gate array (FPGA). The functionality of the system is demonstrated by sending binary instructions to the controller. The controller transmits patterns through an LED, controls an electromechanical device, and uses pulse-width modulation (PWM) for radar functions.

Improved television signal processing system

Digital system processes spacecraft television pictures by converting images sensed on a photostorage vidicon to pulses which can be transmitted by telemetry. This system can be applied in the processing of medical X ray photographs and in electron microscopy.

Acoustic-emission signal-processing analog unit for locating flaws in large tanks

Technique monitors structural flaws in 105-in. diameter tanks. Tank surface is divided into many areas and each area is sectioned into 20 equilateral triangles that form icosahedron. Twelve transducers are equally positioned on tank surface at vertex of each triangle. Transducers monitor area for flaws by detecting any increase in acoustical activity.

Charge-coupled device /CCD/ analog signal processing

Analog charge-coupled devices and sampled data filtering have developed into mature disciplines. Each discipline offers the other wide systems advantages where alone it would be impractical. This letter explores these advantages in a number of implementations against the scale of wide low-cost applications.

A synthetic aperture processor using CCD signal processing techniques

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging was the most suitable technique for achieving high resolution imagery through atmospheric cloud cover. This feature was important for planetary as well as earth orbiting satellite systems, and for military aircraft applications. Such applications require onboard data processing or wide-band data transmission systems in order to handle the large amounts of raw data produced by such systems. A number of techniques were utilized in implementing SAR processors. Frequency filtering and Fourier transform operations using both optical and digital techniques were utilized in SAR processing.
