Improving Sim-to-Real Transfer in Vision-Based Robot Navigation Via Instance-Level GAN-Based Data Augmentation

Achieving robust vision-based robotic tasks requires large amounts of data, which are often difficult to obtain in real-world scenarios. Simulators and synthetic data offer a cost-effective alternative, but the visual gap between simulation and reality hinders the performance of models when deployed in real-world environments. In this paper, we present a data augmentation pipeline that integrates a foundation model (Segment Anything Model) with an unsupervised image-to-image translation model (CycleGAN) for instance-level domain transfer from simulation to reality. This pipeline enables the generation of realistic labeled data from synthetic images for training supervised machine learning models in vision-based navigation tasks. We evaluate our approach on real-world data for ego-vehicle pose estimation, a critical autonomous navigation task involving the prediction of cross-track position and heading angle relative to road center line markings. The results of our tests show that our GAN-based data augmentation pipeline significantly outperforms models trained solely on simulation data or on data processed with standard image augmentation methods for sim-to-real transfer, enhancing model robustness and generalizability in real-world scenarios. Our method provides a scalable and flexible data augmentation tool for leveraging large synthetic datasets to enhance vision-based robotic navigation tasks.

Cisplatin-Induced Alteration on Membrane Composition of A549 Cells Revealed by ToF-SIMS

Cisplatin has been clinically used for treatment of solid tumors such as non-small-cell lung cancer for decades. However, tumor resistance may be acquired with losing the antitumor activity of cisplatin. As cellular membrane is the first barrier that cisplatin has to overcome before its further action inside the cells, the membrane composition must play a vital role in the cisplatin uptake and excretion which further influences cisplatin sensitivity. In this work, we applied ToF-SIMS surface analysis combined with principle component analysis to distinguish the differences of cell membrane composition between non-small-cell lung cancer cells (A549) and its cisplatin resistant counterpart A549/DDP cells. The decreased phosphatidylcholine content and more abundant cholesterol were observed in the drug resistant cell surfaces, indicating the decreased membrane fluidity of A549/DDP cells. Moreover, we further compared membrane composition of A549 and A549/DDP cells after being treated with different concentrations of cisplatin. A higher composition level of proteins was discovered on all groups of A549/DDP cell membranes. The altered surface chemistry of cellular membranes induced by cisplatin indicate the significance of membrane structures in the drug resistance, which deserves further investigations to this regard.

The NanoSIMS-HR: The Next Generation of High Spatial Resolution Dynamic SIMS

The high lateral resolution and sensitivity of the NanoSIMS 50 and 50L series of dynamic SIMS instruments have enabled numerous scientific advances over the past 25 years. Here, in this study, we report on the NanoSIMS-HR, the first major upgrade to the series, and analytical tests in a suite of sample types, including an aluminum sample containing silicon crystals, microalgae, and plant roots colonized with a symbiotic fungus. Significant improvements have been made in the Cs + ion source, high voltage (HV) control, stage reproducibility, and other aspects of the instrument that affect performance. The modified design of the NanoSIMS-HR thermal-ionization Cs + source enables a 5 pA primary ion beam to be focused into a 100 nm spot, a ~2.5-fold increase compared to Cs + sources on previous instruments (~2 pA at 100 nm). The brightness of the new Cs + source enables an ultimate lateral resolution as high as 30 nm and improved detection limits for a given analysis area. Sample stage movement accuracy is higher than 500 nm, enabling many-fold higher throughput automated analyses. With the new HV control, the primary ion beam impact energy can be reduced from 16 to 2 keV, which enables higher depth resolution during depth profiling (a 2-fold improvement), albeit with a 5-fold decrease in lateral resolution. In the NanoSIMS-HR, the secondary ion column and detection system are identical to those used in the previous series, and the isotopic analysis performance is as precise as in previous NanoSIMS instruments.

Surface Characterization of Populus during Caldicellulosiruptor bescii Growth by TOF-SIMS Analysis

Caldicellulosiruptor bescii is a thermophilic, anaerobic bacterium that is capable of utilizing unpretreated biomass in addition to breaking down cellulose and hemicellulose into simple sugars. Despite the fact that C. bescii must first bind to the surface of the biomass, there has been no analysis of the morphological or chemical changes to the biomass surface as a result of incubation with the micro-organism. To understand more about C. bescii growth, juvenile poplar stems were sectioned (80 μm thick) and incubated with C. bescii beyond the typical 24 h experiment length. Monitoring the cell counts during incubation revealed a biphasic growth pattern. The impact the micro-organism had on the surface was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), which showed physical crevices in the cell wall caused by the C. bescii along with a decrease of polysaccharide ions and an increase in lignin ions on the poplar surface. Employing infrared microspectroscopy, the decreasing trend was corroborated.

From Sim to Real: A Pipeline for Training and Deploying Traffic Smoothing Cruise Controllers

Designing and validating controllers for connected and automated vehicles to enhance traffic flow presents significant challenges, from the complexity of replicating real-world stop-and-go traffic dynamics in simulation, to the intricacies involved in transitioning from simulation to actual deployment. In this work, we present a full pipeline from data collection to controller deployment. Specifically, we collect 772 km of driving data from the I-24 in Tennessee, and use it to build a one-lane simulator, placing simulated vehicles behind real-world trajectories. Using policy-gradient methods with an asymmetric critic, we improve fuel efficiency by over 10% when simulating congested scenarios. Our comprehensive approach includes reinforcement learning for controller training, software verification, hardware validation and setup, and navigating various sim-to-real challenges. Furthermore, we analyze the controller's behavior and wave-smoothing properties, and deploy it on four Toyota Rav4’s in a real-world validation experiment on the I-24. Lastly, we release the driving dataset, the simulator and the trained controller, to enable future benchmarking and controller design.

SIMS Bias on Isotope Ratios in Ca-Mg-Fe Carbonates (Part III): δ 18 O and δ 13 C Matrix Effects Along the Magnesite-Siderite Solid-Solution Series

This study explores the effects of cation composition on mass bias (i.e., the matrix effect), which is a major component of instrumental mass fractionation (IMF) in the microanalyses of δ 13 C and δ 18 O by SIMS in carbonates of the magnesite–siderite solid-solution series (MgCO 3 –FeCO 3 ). A suite of twelve calibration reference materials (RMs) was developed and documented (calibrated range: Fe# = 0.002–0.997, where Fe# = molar Fe/[Mg + Fe]), along with empirical expressions for regressing calibration data (affording residuals < 0.5‰ relative to certified reference material NIST-19). The calibration curves of both isotope systems are non-linear and have, over a 2-year period, fallen into one of two distinct but largely self-consistent shape categories (data from ten measurement sessions), despite adherence to well-established analytical protocols for carbonate δ 13 C and δ 18 O analyses at WiscSIMS (CAMECA IMS 1280). Mass bias was consistently most sensitive to changes in composition near the magnesite end-member (Fe# 0–0.2), deviating by up to 4.5‰ (δ 13 C) and 14‰ (δ 18 O) with increasing Fe content. The cause of variability in calibration curve shapes is not well understood at present and demonstrates the importance of having available a sufficient number of well-characterised RMs so that potential complexities of curvature can be adequately delineated and accounted for on a session-by-session basis.

Nonlinear Model Predictive Control Based on Real-Time Iteration Scheme for Wave Energy Converters Using WEC-Sim

One of several challenges that wave energy technologies face is their inability to generate electricity cost-competitively with other grid-scale energy generation sources. Several studies have identified two approaches to lower the levelised cost of electricity: reduce the cost over the device's lifetime or increase its overall electrical energy production. Several advanced control strategies have been developed to address the latter. However, only a few take into account the overall efficiency of the power take-off (PTO) system, and none of them solve the optimisation problem that arises at each sampling time on real-time. In this paper, a detailed Nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) approach based on the real-time iteration (RTI) scheme is presented, and the controller performance is evaluated using a time-domain hydrodynamics model (WEC-Sim). The proposed control law incorporates the PTO system's efficiency in a control law to maximise the energy extracted. The study also revealed that RTI-NMPC clearly outperforms a simple resistive controller.

Errata: “Switchable 1,8-diazabicycloundec-7-ene and 1-hexanol ionic liquid analyzed by liquid ToF-SIMS” [Surf. Sci. Spectra 23 , 9 (2016) ]

The identification of a number of mass peaks in the switchable ionic liquid (SWIL) observed in ToF-SIMS is updated based on the most likely chemical formation pathways. The revised identification better reflects the chemical interactions in the SWIL consisting of DBU, 1-hexanol and CO2. A companion paper illustrates the formation mechanism of these updated species is currently under review.

A New Limitation of the Depth Resolution in TOF-SIMS Elemental Profiling: the Influence of a Probing Ion Beam

New data concerning the influence of a probing beam of bismuth ions on the depth resolution in elemental depth profiling by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have been obtained on a TOF.SIMS-5 system using the principle of two separate ion beams. It is established that the existing criterion of nondestructive character of the probing beam, on which this principle is based, is insufficient. Additional processes must be taken into account so as to formulate a more adequate criterion. A regime of depth profiling is proposed that allows the depth resolution to be improved at low energies of sputtering ions.

ToF-SIMS imaging reveals that p -hydroxybenzoate groups specifically decorate the lignin of fibres in the xylem of poplar and willow

Esterified phenolics occur as γ-linked lignin acylations in many plant taxa but little is known about the distribution or function of such groups. In the family Salicaceae, p-hydroxybenzoate groups are present in the lignin of poplars (Populus spp.) and willows (Salix spp.). In this study, the distribution of cell wall-bound p-hydroxybenzoate was examined in different tissue and cell types of poplar and willow trees. This analysis showed that p-hydroxybenzoate groups were most prevalent in juvenile stems, and were elevated in tension wood and following nitrogen fertilisation. Closer examination of stem cross-sections using time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) directly showed that p-hydroxybenzoate groups occur predominantly in the cell walls of fibres and are largely absent from vessel elements. Furthermore, these results point to a role for ester-linked groups in modifying the syringyl-rich lignin of fibres, perhaps to strengthen the cell walls of these structural elements or to increase lignification rates.

Analysis of vapor diffusion Nb$^{3}$Sn coating at Fermilab: Minimizing impurities using TOF-SIMS

Nb₃Sn demonstrates steady advancements nowadays offering reduced power cost in superconducting radio-frequency cavities due to its high critical temperature, quality factor, and achieved accelerating gradient. However, theoretical estimates of its radio-frequency parameters have not been achieved due to several potentially limiting mechanisms: tin spots, patchy regions, defects, thermal impedance, and impurities. While some of these limitations have been intensively studied, impurity analysis in Nb$_3$Sn coatings have received less attention. We report an investigation of impurities in several vapor-diffused Nb₃Sn coated samples using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS) and show allowable impurity levels in view of superconducting cavity performance. Challenges and lessons learned in maintaining clean Nb$_3$Sn coatings are also discussed.

SIMS Investigation of Furnace-Baked Nb

Results recently published by Ito et al. showed that "furnace baking" Nb SRF cavities after electropolishing yields high quality factors and anti-Q-slopes resembling that of N doped cavities. Small Nb samples were prepared following the recipe outlined by Ito. These samples were measured by SIMS to examine impurity contributions to the RF penetration layer. These diffusion profiles are modeled, and their consequences on RF properties discussed.

Chemical Analysis of Tantalum Thin Films compared to Niobium Thin Films using SIMS and XPS

Superconducting qubits are a leading platform for quantum computation. These circuits are typically made from superconducting materials like aluminum or niobium. However, the amorphous niobium oxide and aluminum oxide on the surface of these circuits introduce considerable RF loss due to the presence of two-level systems (TLS), which limits the maximum coherence times T1 to ~100 μs. Capping the niobium qubits with a tantalum layer leads to a 3- 5x improvement [Bal et al., 2024]. But even in this case, tantalum forms an amorphous surface oxide that introduces loss. In an effort to devise strategies to eliminate the presence of this oxide, we present a comprehensive study on the nature of Ta oxide using x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) as a function of heat treatment. The thin films were annealed in ultra-high vacuum conditions and analyzed in situ to characterize the composition and evolution of the native tantalum oxide layer and oxide-metal interface. Our analysis reveals two critical differences between tantalum and niobium oxides: Nb2O5 completely dissolves at 400°C, while Ta2O5 persists even at 800°C. Additionally, tantalum oxide contains only a single suboxide (TaO), in contrast to niobium's two suboxides (NbO and NbO2). The suboxide of tantalum contributes minimally to the total oxide content and shows a relative increase with temperature. Understanding the oxide’s behavior will open new pathways for optimizing coherence times in tantalum qubits.
