Performance of recoverable single and multiple Space Tugs for missions beyond earth escape.

A recoverable Space Tug launched by the Space Shuttle can provide the required post-orbital propulsion needed for placement of unmanned satellites. The Space Tug will also be used to launch interplanetary spacecraft from low earth orbit. This study summarizes the performance of single and multiple Space Tugs (in tandem) for launching spacecraft beyond earth escape. Trajectories are developed that allow recovery of the Tugs whenever practical. The effects of important Tug and trajectory parameters on performance are presented. It is concluded that a single Tug can inject spacecraft to Mars or Venus and still be recovered. The use of several Tugs in tandem can provide a significant increase in capability over the use of a single Tug. The more difficult missions involve a mix of recovered and expended Tugs.

Use of the single-breath method of estimating cardiac output during exercise-stress testing.

The single-breath cardiac output measurement technique of Kim et al. (1966) has been modified for use in obtaining cardiac output measurements during exercise-stress tests on Apollo astronauts. The modifications involve the use of a respiratory mass spectrometer for data acquisition and a digital computer program for data analysis. The variation of the modified method for triplicate steady-state cardiac output measurements was plus or minus 1 liter/min. The combined physiological and methodological variation seen during a set of three exercise tests on a series of subjects was 1 to 2.5 liter/min. Comparison of the modified method with the direct Fick technique showed that although the single-breath values were consistently low, the scatter of data was small and the correlation between the two methods was high. Possible reasons for the low single-breath cardiac output values are discussed.

Fatigue hardening in niobium single crystals.

Nb single crystals of various orientations were cyclically deformed in tension-compression under strain control. At low strain amplitudes all crystals oriented for single slip and some oriented for multiple slip showed a two stage hardening. When present, the first stage was characterized with almost no cyclic work hardening. The rate of hardening in the second stage increased with strain amplitude and the amount of secondary slip. In crystals oriented for single slip kink bands developed on their side faces during rapid hardening stage which resulted in considerable amount of asterism in Laue spots. A cyclic stress-strain curve independent of prior history was found to exist which was also independent of crystal orientation. Furthermore, this curve differed only slightly from that of polycrystalline Nb obtained from data in literature.

Study of the single body yawed-wing aircraft concept

Areas relating to the development and improvement of the single-fuselage, yawed-wing transonic transport concept were investigated. These included: (1) developing an alternate configuration with a simplified engine installation;(2) determining a structural design speed placard that would allow the engine-airframe match for optimum airplane performance; and (3) conducting an aeroelastic stability and control analysis of the yawed-wing configuration with a flexible wing. A two-engine, single-fuselage, yawed-wing configuration was developed that achieved the Mach 1.2 design mission at 5560 km (3000 nmi) and payload of 18,140 kg (40,000 lb) with a gross weight of 217,700 kg (480,000 lb). This airplane was slightly heavier than the aft-integrated four-engine configuration that had been developed in a previous study. A modified structural design speed placard, which was determined, resulted in a 6% to 8% reduction in the gross weight of the yawed-wing configurations. The dynamic stability characteristics of the single-fuselage yawed-wing configuration were found to be very dependent on the magnitude of the pitch/roll coupling, the static longitudinal stability, and the dihedral effect.

Application of a single laser Doppler system to the measurement of atmospheric winds

The feasibility of employing a single laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) system to remotely measure one-, two-, and three-dimensional velocity components in atmospheric flow fields is presented. A focused continuous wave CO2 laser emitting at the 10.6 mu wavelength is used as the laser source. Scan configurations employed by the LDV system were single-point, two-point, conical, and spiral conical. Test results are presented, which include favorable comparisons of velocity components measured by conventional anemometry and the LDV system. The feasibility using a single-beam LDV employing a conical scan technique for measuring two- and three-dimensional mean winds. Measurements to 300 m in dense fogs showed the ability of the LDV system to operate in dense fogs.

SERV - A reusable single stage to orbit space shuttle concept

Feasibility studies were made on the SERV (Single-stage Earth-orbital Reusable Vehicle), which is a single-stage, fully reusable space shuttle concept. The studies show that a reusable single-stage-to-orbit shuttle can be built using present technology. The SERV satisfies all of NASA's requirements for low earth orbital and space station resupply missions. The baseline vehicle has a modified Apollo external configuration, 90 ft in diameter and 66 ft in height, with a cargo hold 23 ft in diameter and 60 ft long. Take-off is vertical, powered by an integral aerospike rocket engine. An Apollo-type ballistic reentry profile is used, and precision vertical landing is possible with power provided by an array of turbojet engines. The key feasibility issues discussed are engine performance, aerodynamic drag, subsystem weights, method and type of thermal protection during reentry, descent aerodynamic characteristics, and landing method.

Electrical characterization of GaAs single crystal in direct support of M555 flight experiment

The exploration of several nondestructive methods of electrical characterization of semiconductor single crystals was carried out during the period ending May 1974. Two methods of obtaining the microwave skin depth, one for the mapping flat surfaces and the other for analyzing the whole surface of small single crystal wafers, were developed to the stage of working laboratory procedures. The preliminary 35 GHz data characterizing the two types of space-related single crystal surfaces, flat slices of gallium arsenide and small wafers of germanium selenide, are discussed. A third method of nondestructive mapping of donor impurity density in semiconductor surfaces by scanning with a light beam was developed for GaAs; its testing indicates reasonable precision at reasonable scan rates for GaAs surfaces at room temperature.

Noise comparisons of single and two stage demonstrator fans for advanced technology aircraft

A high-speed single-stage and a low-speed two-stage fan were designed, fabricated, and tested to demonstrate their predicted low noise performance for an advanced 0.85-0.90 cruise Mach number aircraft requiring a 1.8-1.9 pressure ratio fan. Acoustic tests were made with both unsuppressed and suppressed configurations. The two-stage fan demonstrated that quiet fan technology developed for low-speed single-stage fan is applicable to two-stage designs. The unsuppressed high-speed single-stage fan demonstrated that significant reductions in inlet noise can be achieved from the sonic blockage caused by supersonic flow in the rotor blading. Both fans demonstrated suppressed inlet noise levels with treated sonic inlets that met advanced technology goals.

Ceramics for the advanced automotive gas turbine engine: A look at a single shaft design

The results of a preliminary analysis of a single shaft regenerative design with a single stage radial turbine are presented to show the fuel economy that can be achieved at high turbine inlet temperatures, with this particular advanced design, if the turbine tip speed and regenerator inlet temperature are not limited. The engine size was 100 hp for application to a 3500 lb auto. The fuel economy was analyzed by coupling the engine to the auto through a continuously variable speed-ratio transmission and operating the system at constant turbine inlet temperature over the Composite Driving Cycle. The fuel was gasoline and the analysis was for a 85 F day. With a turbine inlet temperature of 2500 F the fuel economy was 26.2 mpg, an improvement of 18 percent over that of 22.3 mpg with a turbine inlet temperature of 1900 F. The turbine tip speed needed for best economy with the 2500 F engine was 2530 ft/sec. The regenerator temperature was approximately 2200 F at idle. Disk stresses were estimated for one single stage radial turbine and two two-stage radial-axial turbines and compared with maximum allowable stress curves estimated for a current ceramic material. Results show a need for higher Weibull Modulus, higher strength ceramics.

On the origin of stable remanence in pseudo-single domain grains

A critique is presented of the quantitative model for the magnetic moment of pseudo-single domain grains (hypothetical magnetite grains larger than the critical size threshold for single domain behavior, yet also difficult to demagnetize), derived by Stacey and Banerjee (1974). Evidence from theoretical studies in micromagnetics demonstrates that the spin orientations in such grains are too complex to permit ready prediction of the magnetic moments. However, this limitation in the theory may be overcome by experiments involving rare earth-cobalt alloys and yttrium iron garnet crystals; these studies have suggested that surface anisotropy is the predominant cause of the high coercivity of pseudo-single domain grains.

Method for the preparation of inorganic single crystal and polycrystalline electronic materials

Large area, semiconductor crystals selected from group 3-5 compounds and alloys are provided for semiconductor device fabrication by the use of a selective etching operation which completely removes the substrate on which the desired crystal was deposited. The substrate, selected from the same group as the single crystal, has a higher solution rate than the epitaxial single crystal which is essentially unaffected by the etching solution. The preparation of gallium phosphide single crystals using a gallium arsenide substrate and a concentrated nitric acid etching solution is described.

Rapid, single-step most-probable-number method for enumerating fecal coliforms in effluents from sewage treatment plants

A single-step most-probable-number method for determining the number of fecal coliform bacteria present in sewage treatment plant effluents is discussed. A single growth medium based on that of Reasoner et al. (1976) and consisting of 5.0 gr. proteose peptone, 3.0 gr. yeast extract, 10.0 gr. lactose, 7.5 gr. NaCl, 0.2 gr. sodium lauryl sulfate, and 0.1 gr. sodium desoxycholate per liter is used. The pH is adjusted to 6.5, and samples are incubated at 44.5 deg C. Bacterial growth is detected either by measuring the increase with time in the electrical impedance ratio between the innoculated sample vial and an uninnoculated reference vial or by visual examination for turbidity. Results obtained by the single-step method for chlorinated and unchlorinated effluent samples are in excellent agreement with those obtained by the standard method. It is suggested that in automated treatment plants impedance ratio data could be automatically matched by computer programs with the appropriate dilution factors and most probable number tables already in the computer memory, with the corresponding result displayed as fecal coliforms per 100 ml of effluent.

Single-mode laser studies: Design and performance of a fixed-wave length source and coupling of lasers to thin-film optical waveguides

A module developed for the generation of a stable single wavelength to be used for a fiber optic multiplexing scheme is described. The laser is driven with RZ pulses, and the temperature is stabilized thermoelectrically. The unit is capable of maintaining a fixed wavelength within about 6 A as the pulse duty cycle is changed between 0 and 100 percent. This is considered the most severe case, and much tighter tolerances are obtainable for constant input power coding schemes. Using a constricted double heterostructure laser, a wavelength shift of 0.083 A mA is obtained due to laser self-heating by a dc driving current. The thermoelectric unit is capable of maintaining a constant laser heat-sink temperature within 0.02 C. In addition, miniature lenses and couplers are described which allow efficient coupling of single wavelength modes of junction lasers to thin film optical waveguides. The design of the miniature cylinder lenses and the prism coupling techniques allow 2 mW of single wavelength mode junction laser light to b coupled into thin film waveguides using compact assemblies. Selective grating couplers are also studied.

Aerodynamic design optimization of a fuel efficient high-performance, single-engine, business airplane

A design study has been conducted to optimize a single-engine airplane for a high-performance cruise mission. The mission analyzed included a cruise speed of about 300 knots, a cruise range of about 1300 nautical miles, and a six-passenger payload (5340 N (1200 lb)). The purpose of the study is to investigate the combinations of wing design, engine, and operating altitude required for the mission. The results show that these mission performance characteristics can be achieved with fuel efficiencies competitive with present-day high-performance, single- and twin-engine, business airplanes. It is noted that relaxation of the present Federal Aviation Regulation, Part 23, stall-speed requirement for single-engine airplanes facilitates the optimization of the airplane for fuel efficiency.

Combined single-pulse holography and time-resolved laser schlieren for flow visualization

A pulsed ruby laser and continuous-wave argon ion laser were used in a combined setup at the Langley Expansion Tube for single pulse holography and time resolved laser schlieren with a common optical axis. The systems can be operated simultaneously for a single run. For a single frame, the pulsed holographic setup offers the options of shadowgraph, Schlieren, and interferometry from the reconstructed hologram as well as the advantage of post-run sensitivity adjustments. For flow establishment studies the time resolved laser Schlieren provides visualization of the flow field every 12.5 microns for up to 80 frames with an exposure time per frame of 5.4 microns.

Acoustic performance of inlet suppressors on an engine generating a single mode

Three single degree of freedom liners with different open area ratio face sheets were designed for a single spinning mode in order to evaluate an inlet suppressor design method based on mode cutoff ratio. This mode was generated by placing 41 rods in front of the 28 blade fan of a JT15D turbofan engine. At the liner design this near cutoff mode has a theoretical maximum attenuation of nearly 200 dB per L/D. The data show even higher attenuations at the design condition than predicted by the theory for dissipation of a single mode within the liner. This additional attenuation is large for high open area ratios and should be accounted for in the theory. The data show the additional attenuation to be inversely proportional to acoustic resistance. It was thought that the additional attenuation could be caused by reflection and modal scattering at the hard to soft wall interface. A reflection model was developed, and then modified to fit the data. This model was checked against independent (multiple pure tone) data with good agreement.

InGaAsP/InP laser development for single-mode, high-data-rate communications

Materials studies as well as general and specific device development were carried out in the InGaAsP system. A comparison was made of three standard methods of evaluating substrate quality by means of dislocation studies. A cause of reduced yield of good wafers, the pullover of melt from one bin to the next, has been analyzed. Difficulties with reproducible zinc acceptor doping have been traced to segregation of zinc in the In/Zn alloy used for the doping source. Using EBIC measurments, the pn junction was shown to drift in location depending on factors not always under control. An analysis of contact structures by SIMS showed that the depth to which the sintered Au/Zn contact penetrates into the structure is typically 0.13 microns, or well within the cap layer and out of the p-type cladding and thus not deleterious to laser prformance. The problem of single-mode laser development was investigated and it was shown to be related to the growth habit over four different possible substrate configurations. The fabrication of constricted double heterojunctions, mesa stripe buried heterostructures, and buried heterostructures was discussed, and measurements were presented on the device properties of single-mode buried heterostructure lasers. Results include single spectral line emission at 3 mW and a threshold current of 60 mA.
