PASS: A computer program for Preliminary Aircraft Structural Synthesis

A computer code for Preliminary Aircraft Structural Synthesis provides rapid and accurate analysis for aircraft structures that can be adequately modeled by beam finite elements. The philosophy used in developing the program was to provide a basic framework that can be used for structural synthesis. It is anticipated that a user will need to add detail to this framework in order to perform his specific task. With this philosophy in mind, the program was written so that it is easily divided into segments, thereby making it readily adaptable. The theoretical portion of this manual describes the basic structure of the program and details the development of the unique beam element that is used. The present capability of the algorithm is stated and suggestions are made regarding enhancements to this capability. User information is also given that provides an overview of the program's construction, identifies the required inputs, describes the program output, provides some comments on the program use, and exhibits results for a simple example.

The rate of synthesis and decomposition of tissue proteins in hypokinesia and increased muscular activity

During hypokinesia and physical loading (swimming) of rats, the radioactivity of skeletal muscle, liver, kidney, heart, and blood proteins was determined after administration of radioactive amino acids. Tissue protein synthesis decreased during hypokinesia, and decomposition increased. Both synthesis and decomposition increased during physical loading, but anabolic processes predominated in the total tissue balance. The weights of the animals decreased in hypokinesia and increased during increased muscle activity.

Noble gas trapping and fractionation during synthesis of carbonaceous matter

An investigation of noble gas entrapment during synthesis of carbonaceous, macromolecular, and kerogen-like substances is presented. High molecular weight organic matter synthesized in aqueous condensation reactions contained little gas, and the composition was consistent with fractionation due to noble gas solubility in water; however, propane soot produced during a modified Miller-Urey experiment in an aritificial gas mixture contained high concentrations of trapped noble gases that displayed strong elemental fractionation from their reservoirs. It is concluded that theses experiemnts show that processes exist for synthesis of carbonaceous carriers that result in high noble gas concentrations and strong elemental fractionation at temperatures well above those required by absorption to achieve similar effects.

Galaxy spectral synthesis. II - M32 and the ages of galaxies

The paper presents a population synthesis performed on absolute spectrophotometry for the central 31 in. of M32. The metallicity of M32 is solar with 0.1 dex, implying that major star formation continued in M32 until 5 Gyr ago, or 10 Gyr after the oldest globular clusters formed. The synthesis models predict that the rate of mass return to the interstellar medium in M32 from evolving stars is about 0.0008 solar mass/yr; however, the upper limit for star formation during the past 1 Gyr is about 0.003/yr, showing that the available optical observations do not exclude complete recycling of gas lost during stellar evolution into new generations of stars.

Synthesis of peptides from amino acids and ATP with lysine-rich proteinoid

The paper examines the synthesis of peptides from aminoacids and ATP with a lysine-rich protenoid. The latter in aqueous solution catalyzes the formation of peptides from free amino acids and ATP; this catalytic activity is not found in acidic protenoids, even though the latter contain a basic aminoacid. The pH optimum for the synthesis is about 11, but it is appreciable below 8 and above 13. Temperature data indicate an optimum at 20 C or above, with little increase in rate up to 60 C. Pyrophosphate can be used instead of ATP, but the yields are lower. The ATP-aided syntheses of peptides in aqueous solution occur with several types of proteinous aminoacids.

F100 multivariable control synthesis program: A review of full scale engine altitude tests

The benefits of linear quadratic regulator synthesis methods in designing a multivariable engine control capable of operating an engine throughout its flight envelope were demonstrated. The entire multivariable control synthesis program is reviewed with particular emphasis on engine tests conducted in the NASA Lewis propulsion systems laboratory altitude facility. The multivariable control has basically a proportional plus integral, model following structure with gains scheduled as functions of flight condition. The multivariable control logic design is described, along with control computer implementation aspects. Altitude tests demonstrated that the multivariable control logic could control an engine over a wide range of test conditions. Representative transient responses are presented to demonstrate engine behavior and the functioning of the control logic.

Discrete-continuous variable structural synthesis using dual methods

Approximation concepts and dual methods are extended to solve structural synthesis problems involving a mix of discrete and continuous sizing type of design variables. Pure discrete and pure continuous variable problems can be handled as special cases. The basic mathematical programming statement of the structural synthesis problem is converted into a sequence of explicit approximate primal problems of separable form. These problems are solved by constructing continuous explicit dual functions, which are maximized subject to simple nonnegativity constraints on the dual variables. A newly devised gradient projection type of algorithm called DUAL 1, which includes special features for handling dual function gradient discontinuities that arise from the discrete primal variables, is used to find the solution of each dual problem. Computational implementation is accomplished by incorporating the DUAL 1 algorithm into the ACCESS 3 program as a new optimizer option. The power of the method set forth is demonstrated by presenting numerical results for several example problems, including a pure discrete variable treatment of a metallic swept wing and a mixed discrete-continuous variable solution for a thin delta wing with fiber composite skins.

Recent developments in quasi-Newton methods for structural analysis and synthesis

Unlike the Newton-Raphson method, quasi-Newton methods by virture of the updates and step length control procedures are globally convergent and hence better suited for the solution of nonlinear problems of structural analysis and synthesis. Extension of quasi-Newton algorithms to large scale problems has led to the development of sparse update algorithms and to economical strategies for evaluating sparse Hessians. Ill-conditioning problems have led to the development of self-scaled variable metric and conjugate gradient algorithms, as well as the use of the singular perturbation theory. This paper emphasizes the effectiveness of such quasi-Newton algorithms for nonlinear structural analysis and synthesis.

Integration of a code for aeroelastic design of conventional and composite wings into ACSYNT, an aircraft synthesis program

A comparison of program estimates of wing weight, material distribution. structural loads and elastic deformations with actual Northrop F-5A/B data is presented. Correlation coefficients obtained using data from a number of existing aircraft were computed for use in vehicle synthesis to estimate wing weights. The modifications necessary to adapt the WADES code for use in the ACSYNT program are described. Basic program flow and overlay structure is outlined. An example of the convergence of the procedure in estimating wing weights during the synthesis of a vehicle to satisfy F-5 mission requirements is given. A description of inputs required for use of the WADES program is included.

Recent advances in electromagnetic synthesis and analysis of dual-shaped reflector antennas

Dual-shaped reflectors have been used for many years. Thus, these reflectors have been used as high gain antennas on Voyagers 1 and 2. The objectives of the geometrical optics (GO) dual shaped synthesis are considered. Concerning the synthesis of dual shaped reflectors, it has been shown for circular symmetric reflectors that an exact GO solution can be found to the problem of transforming, by two reflections, any feed pattern into any aperture distribution. This problem involves solving two simultaneous nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The same approach for offset geometry leads to two simultaneous nonlinear partial differential equations. It is shown that these equations could also be integrated numerically, except that in general these equations are not total and therefore, in general, they do not have a 'smooth' solution. It is further shown that the offset partial differentials often very nearly form a total differential in many cases of practical importance.

Control systems synthesis for a large flexible space antenna

The problem of control systems synthesis is considered for controlling the rigid-body attitude and elastic motion of a large deployable space-based antenna. Two methods for control systems synthesis are considered. The first method utilizes the stability and robustness properties of the controller consisting of torque actuators and collocated attitude and rate sensors. The second method is based on the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control theory. A combination of the two methods, which results in a two-level hierarchical control system, is also briefly discussed. The performance of the controllers is analyzed by computing the variances of pointing errors, feed misalignment errors and surface contour errors in the presence of sensor and actuator noise.

Prebiotic organic matter - Possible pathways for synthesis in a geological context

Models for the accretion of the earth, core formation, differentiation of the planet into core, mantle, crust, and atmosphere, and prebiotic synthesis of organic materials are reviewed. The development of the Haldane-Oparin and Urey models is traced, and the effect of accretion time on the outgassing process and the composition of the consequent atmosphere is examined. Model prebiotic atmospheres are calculated, the extent of equilibration of the primitive atmosphere is studied and the evolution of the atmosphere prior to organic chemical evolution is reviewed. Finally, experimental progress in synthesis of biological monomers and polymers under presumed early earth conditions is covered.

Nonlinear multivariable design by total synthesis

The Nominal Design Problem (NDP) is extended to nonlinear cases, and a new case study of robust feedback synthesis for gas turbine control design is presented. The discussion of NDP extends and builds on earlier Total Synthesis Problem theory and ideas. Some mathematical preliminaries are given in which a bijection from a set S onto a set T is considered, with T admitting the structure of an F-vector space. NDP is then discussed for a nonlinear plant, and nonlinear nominal design is defined and characterized. The design of local controllers for a turbojet and the scheduling of these controls into a global control are addressed.

Synthesis of perfluoroalkylene dianilines

The objective of this contrast was to optimize and scale-up the synthesis of 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)-hexafluoropropane and 1,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane, as well as to explore avenues to other perfluoroalkyl-bridged dianilines. Routes other than Friedel-Crafts reaction leading to 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane were investigated. The processes utilizing bisphenol-AF were all unsuccessful; reactions aimed at the production of 4-(hexafluoro-2-halo-isopropyl)aniline from the hydroxyl intermediate failed to yield the desired products. Tailoring the conditions of the Friedel-Crafts reaction of 4-(hexafluoro-2-hydroxyisopropyl)aniline, aniline, and aluminum chloride by using hydrochloride salts and selecting optimum reagent ratios, reaction times, and temperature resulted in approx. 20% yield of pure crystallized 2,2-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane in 0.2 mole reaction batches. Yields up to approx. 40% were realized in small, approx. 0.01 mole, batches. The synthesis of 1,3-bis(4-aminophenyl)hexafluoropropane starting with perfluoroglutarimidine was reinvestigated. The yield of the 4-step reaction sequence giving 1,3-bis(4-acetamidophenyl)hexafluoropropane was raised to 44%. The yield of the subsequent hydrolysis process was improved by a factor of approx. 2. Approaches to prepare other perfluoroalkyl-bridged dianilines were unsuccessful. Reactions reported to proceed readily with trifluoromethyl substituents failed when longer chain perfluoroalkyl groups were employed.
