Segmentation Model Distillation [Poster]

The process of training object detection (OD) or image segmentation model requires both a substantial amount of data and technical knowledge, which often creates challenges in applying these types of models to their full potential. In order to streamline the process of developing these models, we propose a new pipeline where a foundation model assists in the dataset generation. Then this resulting dataset is used to fine-tune a fast light-weight model to perform the custom segmentation or OD. This resulting model is also fit for real-time image segmentation, such as in a video stream.

Technology transfer to a developing nation, Korea

An experimental project is reported which was undertaken. to determine if selected types of technology developed for the aerospace program during the past decade are relevant to specific industrial problems of a developing nation and to test whether a structured program could facilitate the transfer of relevant technologies. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology and the IIT Research Institute were selected as the active transfer agents to participate in the program. The pilot project was based upon the approach to the transfer of domestic technology developed by the NASA Technology Utilization Division and utilized the extensive data and technical resources available through the Space Agency and its contractors. This pilot project has helped to clarify some aspects of the international technology transfer process and to upgrade Korean technological capabilities.

Investigation of water quality parameters at selected points on the Tennessee River

Physical, chemical, and biological water quality parameters have been investigated at the Widow's Creek steam plant. The water quality parameters and field site locations have been selected so as to be compatible with the interests and needs of the Environmental Application Office at Marshall Space Flight Center. All sampling and testing was conducted as directed in the 13th Edition of Standard Methods of Analysis for Water and Waste Water or as suggested by NASA'S Technical Officer. Data is presented in a form compatible with that presently being collected by other agencies.

Analysis of structural dynamic data from Skylab. Volume 1: Technical discussion

A compendium of Skylab structural dynamics analytical and test programs is presented. These programs are assessed to identify lessons learned from the structural dynamic prediction effort and to provide guidelines for future analysts and program managers of complex spacecraft systems. It is a synopsis of the structural dynamic effort performed under the Skylab Integration contract and specifically covers the development, utilization, and correlation of Skylab Dynamic Orbital Models.

Design study of wind turbines 50 kW to 3000 kW for electric utility applications. Volume 2: Analysis and design

All possible overall system configurations, operating modes, and subsystem concepts for a wind turbine configuration for cost effective generation of electrical power were evaluated for both technical feasibility and compatibility with utility networks, as well as for economic attractiveness. A design optimization computer code was developed to determine the cost sensitivity of the various design features, and thus establish the configuration and design conditions that would minimize the generated energy costs. The preliminary designs of both a 500 kW unit and a 1500 kW unit operating in a 12 mph and 18 mph median wind speed respectively, were developed. The various design features and components evaluated are described, and the rationale employed to select the final design configuration is given. All pertinent technical performance data and component cost data is included. The costs of all major subassemblies are estimated and the resultant energy costs for both the 500 kW and 1500 kW units are calculated.

Harrier III-AV8B with a modern engine

The paper examines the application of a 26, 156-lb thrust engine (which is 30 percent more thrust than the short-lift dry rating on the F402-RR-406 Pegasus engine) to an AV-8B aircraft. This modern engine has 30 percent more thrust than the F402-RR-406 Pegasus engine with no increase in engine weight; the weight is assumed to be constant for both engines. The paper focuses on the benefit to the AV-8B in increasing short takeoff gross weight and vertical landing weight. A second comparison is made between the bigger engine with the existing thrust-versus-SFC curve, and a 10 percent lower SFC curve. The notion of a modern engine with 10 percent lower SFC and 30 percent more thrust for the same size and weight is presented as a hypothesis, and is not supported by discussing engine technology. There are no engine data or technical discussion as to how the modern engine is constructed or which manufacturer could build it. The performance estimates are generated by ACSYNT, a NASA developed computer code that is available to U.S. industry and has been reported on in a number of other publications.

Definition of common support equipment and space station interface requirements for IOC model technology experiments

A study was conducted to identify the common support equipment and Space Station interface requirements for the IOC (initial operating capabilities) model technology experiments. In particular, each principal investigator for the proposed model technology experiment was contacted and visited for technical understanding and support for the generation of the detailed technical backup data required for completion of this study. Based on the data generated, a strong case can be made for a dedicated technology experiment command and control work station consisting of a command keyboard, cathode ray tube, data processing and storage, and an alert/annunciator panel located in the pressurized laboratory.

VLBI using a telescope in Earth orbit. I - The observations

A VLBI experiment has been conducted at a frequency of 2.3 GHz, using an antenna in Earth orbit. The observational procedure for the orbiting antenna, part of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, is described. Nonstandard VLBI procedures were necessary to obtain adequate phase stability and to correlate the data. Several technical concepts necessary for a dedicated space VLBI mission were successfully tested.

Development of an Ada programming support environment database SEAD (Software Engineering and Ada Database) administration manual

Software Engineering and Ada Database (SEAD) was developed to provide an information resource to NASA and NASA contractors with respect to Ada-based resources and activities which are available or underway either in NASA or elsewhere in the worldwide Ada community. The sharing of such information will reduce duplication of effort while improving quality in the development of future software systems. SEAD data is organized into five major areas: information regarding education and training resources which are relevant to the life cycle of Ada-based software engineering projects such as those in the Space Station program; research publications relevant to NASA projects such as the Space Station Program and conferences relating to Ada technology; the latest progress reports on Ada projects completed or in progress both within NASA and throughout the free world; Ada compilers and other commercial products that support Ada software development; and reusable Ada components generated both within NASA and from elsewhere in the free world. This classified listing of reusable components shall include descriptions of tools, libraries, and other components of interest to NASA. Sources for the data include technical newletters and periodicals, conference proceedings, the Ada Information Clearinghouse, product vendors, and project sponsors and contractors.
