Plasmon-enhanced ultralow-threshold solid-state triplet fusion upconversion

Triplet fusion upconversion has potential applications in solar cells, photoredox catalysis, additive manufacturing and bioimaging. However, solid-state upconversion systems have struggled to measure up to their solution-phase counterparts, often requiring enormous optical power densities to operate at the maximum efficiency. Here we substantially improve the performance of upconversion films through excitation with surface plasmons that propagate along a planar silver-film interface, leading to an absorption enhancement that reduces the intensity threshold I th by a factor of 19 and enhances the external quantum efficiency by a factor of 17. From this, we achieve I th values as low as 3.4 mW cm −2 and an external quantum efficiency up to 0.094%. To demonstrate real-world viability, we couple the upconversion film to plasmons generated by the near-field of excitons in an organic light-emitting diode. As a result, this scheme is then used to fabricate a white-emitting organic light-emitting diode where blue emission sources from plasmon-excited upconversion, achieving a high colour rendering index of 86.2 and setting precedent for blue emission in the absence of high-energy polarons or triplets.

Emerging investigator series: ion diffusivities in nanoconfined interfacial water films contribute to mineral carbonation thresholds

The dynamics and reactivity of nanoconfined fluids play critical roles across a wide range of environmental and technological systems, though reaction mechanisms and kinetics are not well understood. Here, the carbonation kinetics of forsterite (Mg 2 SiO 4 ) exposed to 90 atm supercritical carbon dioxide at 35–65 °C and 85–100% relative humidity (RH) was monitored with in situ X-ray diffraction, and partner molecular dynamics simulations were used to describe the free energy landscape of Mg 2+ adsorption and diffusion on forsterite surfaces covered in water films 3–10 monolayers thick. The collective findings reveal how decreasing the water film thickness by ~1.4 monolayers, from ~0.92 to ~0.64 nm, inhibited reaction rates by up to 97%, promoted anhydrous Mg-carbonate (magnesite, MgCO 3 ) precipitation, and more than doubled the apparent activation energy of carbonation. The transport simulations suggest that four monolayers are required to enable sufficiently facile Mg 2+ diffusion, helping explain previously observed water film thickness-dependent reactivity thresholds.

Low-threshold laser medium utilizing semiconductor nanoshell quantum dots

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) represent a promising class of nanomaterials for lasing applications. Currently, one of the key challenges facing the development of high-performance NC optical gain media lies in enhancing the lifetime of biexciton populations. This usually requires the employment of charge-delocalizing particle architectures, such as core/shell NCs, nanorods, and nanoplatelets. Here, we report on a two-dimensional nanoshell quantum dot (QD) morphology that enables a strong delocalization of photoinduced charges, leading to enhanced biexciton lifetimes and low lasing thresholds. A unique combination of a large exciton volume and a smoothed potential gradient across interfaces of the reported CdS bulk /CdSe/CdS shell (core/shell/shell) nanoshell QDs results in strong suppression of Auger processes, which was manifested in this work though the observation of stable amplified stimulated emission (ASE) at low pump fluences. An extensive charge delocalization in nanoshell QDs was confirmed by transient absorption measurements, showing that the presence of a bulk-size core in CdS bulk /CdSe/CdS shell QDs reduces exciton–exciton interactions. Altogether, present findings demonstrate unique advantages of the nanoshell QD architecture as a promising optical gain medium in solid-state lighting and lasing applications.

Surmounting the interband threshold limit by the hot electron excitation of multi-metallic plasmonic AgAuCu NPs for UV photodetector application

We report multi-metallic alloy NPs composed of various elemental compositions can surmount the interband threshold limit of mono-metallic NPs and thus can offer a promising route to boost up the performance limit of conventional ultraviolet photodetectors (PDs). In this work, a hybrid UV-PD configuration has been demonstrated by combining the multi-metallic plasmonic alloy NPs of AgCu, AuCu, and AgAuCu on a GaN photoactive layer in order to exploit the improved photo carrier injection by the strong hot electrons and LSPR. Among various devices, the tri-metallic AgAuCu NP PD demonstrates the highest performance with a remarkably high photocurrent of 1.47 x 10 -2 A at 1 V with fast rise (T r ) and fall (T f ) times of 170 and 700 ms with a very stable current. This leads to the superior figure-of-merit parameters of the PD with a photoresponsivity of 4.3 x 10 6 mA W-1, detectivity of 3.52 x 10 12 Jones and EQE of 1.39 x 10 6 %, which is ~16 times higher than the bare GaN PD. This ranks the AgAuCu PD as one of the best GaN based UV photodetectors. The photocurrent enhancement and excellent figure-of-merit can be attributed to the significantly increased photo carrier injection by the efficient hot electron generation via the LSPR and improved interfacial barrier characteristics by the tri-metallic elemental synergy.

Safety factor and turbulence dynamics dependence of the L-H power threshold on DIII-D

The L-H transition power threshold (PLH) is discovered to have a vital dependence on q 95 , at n e ~ 3.2 × 10 19 m -3 on DIII-D. Comprehensive 2D turbulence and flow measurements in the plasma edge reveal the co-existence of two frequency bands of broadband modes across the L-H transition with higher flow shear at higher q 95 , which can help explain the linear decrease in PLH as q 95 is increased from 3.5 to 4.9. Density fluctuation measurements by beam emission spectroscopy at higher q 95 show that the lower frequency band (<20 kHz) of the broadband modes propagates in the ion diamagnetic direction in the lab frame (identified as an ion mode), whereas the higher frequency band (>20 kHz) propagates in the electron diamagnetic direction (identified as an electron mode). The turbulence amplitude at the plasma edge is higher at higher q 95 , implying a higher drive for a Reynolds stress driven zonal flow. At lower density, n e ~ 1.5 × 10 19 m -3 , there is little dependence of PLH on q95. Linear CGYRO kinetic simulation has shown a switch from one mode to two modes at higher q 95 at n e ~ 3.2 × 10 19 m -3 compared to lower q 95 . The ion temperature profile has been shown to strongly impact the dual mode characteristics with the increasing growth rate of the ion mode at a higher edge Ti gradient. The observations imply that it may be possible to reduce the required input power to trigger the L-H transition for ITER if both the ion and electron modes are similarly driven in the plasma edge.

Using 19 F( 3 He, t ) 19 Ne*(γ) to Study Astrophysically Important Levels Near the 18 F + p Threshold

A direct test of nova explosion models comes from the observation of γ rays created in the decay of radioactive isotopes produced in the nova. One such isotope, 18 F, is believed to be the main source of observable γ rays at and below 511 keV. The main destruction mechanism of 18 F is thought to be the 18 F( p ,α)15O reaction, and uncertainties in the reaction rate arise from uncertainties in the energies, spins, and parities of the nuclear levels in 19 Ne above the 18 F + p threshold. To measure the properties of these levels, the 19 F( 3 He, t ) 19 Ne*(γ) reaction was studied at Argonne National Laboratory and the Nuclear Science Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame.

Reshock analysis for PMMA driven above the threshold for chemical decomposition

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a transparent thermoplastic often used in shock compression science. Previous proceedings (AIP Conf. Proc. 845, 131 (2006)) described plate impact experiments in which PMMA was reshocked to pressures of up to ~130 GPa, well above that at which it decomposes on its principal Hugoniot. Because some of the conclusions of the original analysis were surprising, the results were reanalyzed in a later proceeding (ibid. 1426, 771 (2012)). In addition to our own reanalysis of the data, we performed hydrodynamic simulations of the experiments based on a new equation of state for PMMA shocked above its threshold for decomposition.

Coalescence and splashing threshold for head-on collisions of liquid metal nanodroplets

Head-on collisions of liquid metal nanodroplets in a vacuum are investigated through molecular dynamics simulations in order to determine the transition threshold between the coalescing and splashing regimes for six different materials (aluminum, calcium, cerium, gold, platinum, and tin). Droplets of various sizes and initial speeds are simulated, and it is found that the Reynolds and Ohnesorge numbers are able to predict the transition between the coalescing and splashing regimes. An energy balance for coalescing droplets shows that the initial energy is mainly converted to thermal energy increasing the temperature of the combined droplets by several hundred to several thousand kelvin depending on the material, and this result is confirmed in the simulations. Furthermore, when splashing occurs, the number of smaller droplets formed and the spreading rate are found to be dependent on the initial size and initial speed of the original droplets.

Sub-threshold ultrafast one-photon photoemission from a Cu(111) photocathode

Single-photon photoemission of electrons for incident photon energies below the surface work function is reported for a single-crystal Cu(111) photocathode. Spectral characterization of the quantum efficiency and mean transverse energy of the emitted electrons is shown to be consistent with emission from a thermalized hot electron distribution photoexcited on sub-picosecond time scales into an upper conduction band at the L-point of the Brillouin zone of copper. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such excited-state thermionic emission has been observed from a planar metal photocathode, and then from a commonly used photocathode material. The results, therefore, indicate the potential importance of such band structure dependent sub-threshold photoemission mechanisms on the performance of photocathodes employed for the generation of short electron pulses using sub-picosecond laser pulses. Consequently, the combined experimental and theoretical work presented in this paper contributes to solid-state photocathode-based research aimed at our understanding and selection (or discovery) of high brightness photo-electron sources required for many electron-based diffraction, imaging, and accelerator applications.

Electronic states and transitions of PrO and PrO + probed by threshold ionization spectroscopy and spin–orbit multiconfiguration perturbation theory

The precise ionization energy of praseodymium oxide (PrO) seeded in supersonic molecular beams is measured with mass-analyzed threshold ionization (MATI) spectroscopy. Here, a total of 33 spin–orbit (SO) states of PrO and 23 SO states of PrO + are predicted by second-order multiconfigurational quasi-degenerate perturbation (MCQDPT2) theory. Electronic transitions from four low-energy SO levels of the neutral molecule to the ground state of the singly charged cation are identified by combining the MATI spectroscopic measurements with the MCQDPT2 calculations. The precise ionization energy is used to reassess the ionization energies and the reaction enthalpies of the Pr + O → PrO + + e – chemi-ionization reaction reported in the literature. An empirical formula that uses atomic electronic parameters is proposed to predict the ionization energies of lanthanide monoxides, and the empirical calculations match well with available precise experimental measurements.

Unveiling the structure and electronic characteristics of amorphous GeS for high performance threshold switching

Ovonic threshold switching selectors are widely studied owing to the essential application in high density phase-change memory. Amorphous GeS is proposed as a potential candidate for the excellent performance. However, the knowledge of amorphous GeS is still insufficient up to date. Here, we have studied the structure and electronic characteristics of GeS in the amorphization process, by using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the amorphous GeS is mainly made up of Ge–S bonds. The Ge- and S-centered clusters are dominantly in the form of octahedral structures in liquid GeS. Furthermore, during the amorphization process, most of Ge-centered clusters become highly coordinated octahedrons while a small number of Ge-centered clusters change to tetrahedrons, and the S-centered clusters deviate from the octahedral structure gradually. In addition, the large bandgap and the relatively small mid-gap states in amorphous GeS lead to a high switching voltage.

Excessive charge, beam loading, and impedance collapse thresholds for a velvet emitter

Excess emission has been observed from velvet cathodes with total emission times >150 ns. In this diode experiment, we produce a sub-relativistic electron beam with the ability to consistently change γ from 1.2 to 1.5 and β = 0.5–0.75. Electron emission in this particular diode geometry requires electric fields >40 kV/cm. The current increases at steady rates >0.05 A/ns after the head of the pulse, indicating an expansion of the emission surface and reduction in the effective AK gap. Small transients of excess emission (or arcs) are consistently observed for current pulses exceeding 150 ns. The excess emission results in beam loaded levels ≥10 kV on the diode voltage. The effects described here are compounded as diode voltage is increased. The principal objective of these experiments is to quantify electric field emission thresholds, current ramps, excess emission delays, effective beam loading, and impedance collapse.

Aluminum relaxation as the source of excess low energy events in low threshold calorimeters

A previously unexplained background called the Low Energy Excess has negatively impacted the reach of a variety of low threshold calorimeters including light dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering experiments. The relaxation of stressed aluminum films as mediated by the motion of dislocations may account for these observations.

Suppression of ion temperature gradient modes by Alfvén activity above a drive threshold in DIII-D

A recent study demonstrates that the suppression of ion temperature gradient (ITG) modes can occur during the nonlinear evolution of toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) in the DIII-D tokamak [Du et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 135, 265101 (2025)]. In that work, ITG was suppressed by the formation of a narrow, TAE-induced shear flow layer, whose shearing rate exceeded the ITG decorrelation rate. Here, the shear flow arises from an imbalance between Reynolds and Maxwell stress forces, as the TAE departs from the conventional shear Alfvén wave polarization. This follow-up paper systematically identifies the plasma conditions required for robust ITG suppression through a series of comparative experiments. The results show that TAEs routinely suppress ITG turbulence in plasmas with higher local safety factor (q), elevated fast-ion beta, and larger populations of fast ions on passing orbits, i.e., conditions consistent with the substantial TAE drive. Database analysis further reveals the existence of a threshold in TAE drive for ITG suppression. That is, once the drive exceeds a critical value within a favorable q window, the system undergoes the nonlinear bifurcation process, characterized by a sharp increase in TAE saturated amplitudes at a nearly fixed fast ion drive, suppression of ITG turbulence, and the formation of an internal thermal transport barrier at the localized radii.

Photoabsorption and photoionization of N2 near the first ionization threshold

The photoabsorption and photoionization spectra of molecular nitrogen, N2, near the first ionisation threshold display numerous intense resonances that have not been satisfactorily assigned to date. Principal among these is a pair of broad resonances between 126,200 and 126,600 cm−1 commonly referred to as the ”cathedral” bands. Here, we present new double-resonance photoionization spectra in this region recorded via the 𝑎′′ 1Σ+ 𝑔,𝑣′=0 intermediate state as well as new high-resolution, vacuum-ultraviolet photoabsorption spectra of 14N2,14N15N, and 15N2 to provide additional insight into the assignment of these features. Progress towards a fully consistent interpretation of the existing data on these bands is discussed, and a route towards a comprehensive description of the N2 absorption spectrum up to the 𝐵 2Σ+ 𝑢 state of N+ 2 is proposed.

Outer-shell photodetachment of Li - near inner-shell thresholds

The effect of inner-shell photodetachment channels on outer-shell photodetachment is investigated using the R-matrix method. The simplest multishell closed-shell negative ion, Li - , is examined near the 1s detachment threshold and the results show that the interchannel coupling significantly alters the shapes and magnitudes of the valence photodetachment cross sections in this energy region.
