Remote sensing of total dry-matter accumulation in winter wheat

Red and photographic-infrared spectral data collected on 21 dates over the growing season with a hand-held radiometer were quantitatively correlated with total dry-matter accumulation in winter wheat. The spectral data were found to be highly related to vigor and condition of the plant canopy. Two periods of drought stress and subsequent recovery from it were readily apparent in the spectral data. Simple ratios of the spectral radiance data compensated for variations in solar intensities and, when integrated over the growing season, explained 79% of the variation in total above-ground accumulation of dry matter. A satellite system is proposed to provide large-area assessment of total dry accumulation or net primary production from terrestrial vegetation.

Calibration of a turbidity meter for making estimates of total suspended solids concentrations and beam attenuation coefficients in field experiments

Management of water resources such as a reservoir requires using analytical models which describe such parameters as the suspended sediment field. To select or develop an appropriate model requires making many measurements to describe the distribution of this parameter in the water column. One potential method for making those measurements expeditiously is to measure light transmission or turbidity and relate that parameter to total suspended solids concentrations. An instrument which may be used for this purpose was calibrated by generating curves of transmission measurements plotted against measured values of total suspended solids concentrations and beam attenuation coefficients. Results of these experiments indicate that field measurements made with this instrument using curves generated in this study should correlate with total suspended solids concentrations and beam attenuation coefficients in the water column within 20 percent.

Lu-Hf total-rock age for the Amitsoq gneisses, West Greenland

Lu-Hf total-rock data for the Amitsoq gneisses of West Greenland yield an age of 3.55 + or - 0.22 billion years, based on the decay constant for Lu-176 of 1.96 x 10 to the -11th/year, and an initial Hf-176/Hf-177 ratio of 0.280482 + or - 33. The result is in good agreement with Rb-Sr total-rock and U-Pb zircon ages. In spite of severe metamorphism of the area at 2.9 billion years, zircons from two of the samples have remained on the total-rock line, and define points close to the initial Hf ratio. The initial Hf-176/Hf-177 lies close to a chondritic Hf isotopic evolution curve from 4.55 billion years to present. This is consistent with the igneous precursors to the Amitsoq gneisses having been derived from the mantle at or shortly before 3.6 billion years. Anomalous relationships between Hf concentration and the Lu-176/Hf-177 ratio may suggest that trace element abundances in the Amitsoq gneisses are partly controlled by processes related to metamorphism.

The Antarctic environment and its effect upon the total carbon and sulfur abundances in recovered meteorites

Total carbon and sulfur abundances have been measured for 25 meteorites recovered from the Allan Hills area of Antarctica. The majority (greater than 67%) of the meteorites analyzed do not contain enriched carbon abundances resulting from weathering processes. The presence of secondary carbonates in samples which give no apparent evidence of weathering was noted during pyrolysis experiments, despite the 'normal' total carbon abundances. In selected cases, the surfaces of weathered samples may contain up to a factor of two greater carbon content than the interior. Variations in carbon abundances may reflect the degree of weathering and the amount of secondary minerals present. One of the surprises of this study is that the majority of the Antarctic meteorites studied do not exhibit total carbon and sulfur abundances outside the ranges previously observed for falls.

Fragmentation of Fe nuclei on carbon, hydrogen and CH2 targets. I - Individual charge changing and total cross sections. II - Isotopic cross sections

The fragmentation of Fe nuclei in carbon and CH2 targets at energies of 650, 800, and 950 MeV/nuc has been studied. Direct measurements of the interaction between Fe nuclei and the carbon and CH2 targets were carried out. The Fe to H charge changing cross sections derived for selected nuclei showed a clear energy dependence, consistent with the results of Westfall et al. (1979). Values for the total inelastic cross section Fe to H charge changing were obtained by two methods: the first method involved subtracting the total CH2 and C cross sections (values of 703 plus or minus 9 mb and 65 plus or minus 10 mb at 950 MeV/nuc and 650 MeV/nuc, respectively were obtained). The same cross sections were obtained by adding the individual charge changing cross sections. A cross section for Fe to fragment into lower mass Fe isotopes of 65 plus or minus 5 mb was also observed, giving total inelastic mass changing cross sections of 768 plus or minus 11 mb and 716 plus or minus 12 mb, respectively. In addition, the individual isotopic cross sections for Z equals 16-25 are reported.

Characteristics of space and ground based total ozone observing systems investigated by intercomparison of Nimbus 4 Backscattered Ultraviolet /BUV/ data with Dobson and M-83 results

The Nimbus 4 Backscattered Ultraviolet (BUV) experiment data has been reprocessed to provide a near global data set covering the seven years from 1970 to 1977. The data set is the result of a three year effort by the Ozone Processing Team which included review and correction of the spacecraft ephemeris, instrument calibration, and processing algorithms. The accuracy of the resulting total ozone determinations compares well with that of ground based data. An important application of the global BUV data set is to use it in determining long term trends in global total ozone. However, in order to identify long term trends in ozone, it is necessary to eliminate first long-term drift in the instrument calibration. A follow on experiment, the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer, (SBUV/TOMS), was flown on Nimbus 7 launched in October 1978. The SBUV provides information about both total ozone and vertical ozone profiles for a 200 km square field of view.

Local circumstances in Java during the total solar eclipse of 1983

A total solar eclipse of unusually long duration will occur on 11 June 1983. The path of totality begins in the Indian Ocean, passes over many of the islands of Indonesia and ends in the Coral Sea. The duration of totality is maximum near Java where weather prospects are also quite favourable. Local circumstances are examined in detail, presenting predictions for 34 cities on the island. A consideration of lunar-shadow geometry is given to clarify some of the confusion concerning the advantages of observing from the centre line. A comparison of the present predictions with those of the U.S. Naval Observatory reveals some differences which could have important implications for observers.

Nimbus 7 total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) data during the Gap, France, ozone intercomparisons of June 1981

The Nimbus 7 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) data over Europe have been processed for 2 days of the ozone sensor intercomparison balloon campaign in June 1981 at Gap, France. The June 19 TOMS map shows an elongated ozone maximum (about 400 D.U) extending in a NW-SE direction across central Europe and an ozone minimum (300 D.U.) in the central Atlantic. This pattern produces a 12 D.U. decrease along the balloon trajectory from the fist ascent to the second descent. On June 26 a much smaller ozone maximum (400 D.U.) is centered in northern France with its main axis running in a SW-NE direction. The total ozone contours tend to lie parallel to the balloon trajectory so that the total ozone during the flight is nearly constant.

Changes in total body calcium balance with exercise in the rat

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of deconditioning on the total body calcium in rats. Two separate experiments were performed using female Sprague-Dawley rats, 187-266 days of age. Total body calcium was measured in experimental and control rats during and following several weeks of voluntary exercise. The slope from the least-squares fit of total body calcium with time was used to obtain an average calcium balance for each animal during each study period. In both groups, the exercised rats had a significantly decreased calcium balance after cessation of exercise, whereas no significant change was seen in nonexercised controls. In both groups, the exercised animals gained calcium at a significantly greater rate than controls. The findings indicate that while exercised rats may gain calcium at a faster rate compared with nonexercising controls, the rate of gain following cessation of exercise is less than in the controls.

Upper limits on the total radiant energy of solar flares

Limits on the total radiant energy of solar flares during the period February-November 1980 are established using data collected by the solar-constant monitor (ACRIM) on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite. Results show typical limits of 6 x 10 to the 29th erg/sec for a 32-second integration time, with 5-sigma statistical significance, for an impulsive emission. For a gradual component, about 4 x 10 to the 32nd ergs total radiant energy is found. The limits are determined to lie about an order of magnitude higher than the total radiant energy estimated from the various known emission components, which indicates the presence of a heretofore unknown dominant component of flare radiation.

Medium scale disturbances in total ozone during Southern Hemisphere summer

Distinct medium scale disturbances in Southern Hemisphere total ozone were observed by the Nimbus 7 Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer during the 1979 FGGE observing period. These disturbances are shown to be a result of advection by the zonal harmonic wave five which is centered near the tropopause (Salby, 1982). The contribution to the total ozone field by vertical advection due to this wave is shown to be nearly equal to that due to horizontal advection.

Measurements of solar total irradiance and its variability

The development of electrically self calibrated cavity pyrheliometric instrumentation that occurred in the early 20th century provided the technological base for experiments to detect variability of the solar total irradiance. Experiments from ground based observatories, aircraft and balloons during the 1st half of the 20th century were unable to achieve sufficient accuracy or long term precision to unambiguously detect irradiance variations of solar origin. Refinements in pyrheliometric technology during the 1960's and 1970's and the accessibility of extended experimental opportunities above the earth's atmosphere in recent years have provided the first direct observations of solar total irradiance variability and provided the cornerstone observations of a long term database on solar irradiance. A program of solar irradiance monitoring has evolved to sustain the database over at least 22 years, corresponding to a single cycle of solar magnetic activity, and the shortest well identified cycle of climate variation. Direct links between total irradiance variations, solar magnetic activity and the solar global '5 min' oscillation phenomena have been derived from recent space flight observations by the SMM/ACRIM I experiment.

Solar total irradiance and sunspot area in 1981

Precise observations of the total solar irradiance in 1980 from the solar-maximum mission, showed a strong correlation with the projected total sunspot area. This correlation explained about half of the variance (r of about 0.75) in the total-irradiance data, leaving the other half for other solar phenomena and errors in the data. The analysis of the intervening three years of spin-mode data, which have reduced coverage, has begun. It is found that the correlation persists at about the same qualitative level, but with increased scatter that can be attributed to the smaller amount of data. The flatness of the distribution of areas of sunspot groups makes it possible to estimate PSI approximately from only the large groups.

Total pressure loss in vortical solutions of the conical Euler equations

A technique for the solution of the conically self-similar form of the Euler equations is described. Solutions for the flow past a flat-plate delta wing at angle of attack are presented. These solutions show strong leading edge vortices with large total pressure losses in the cores. A study of the effects of various computational parameters on the total pressure loss is made. An explanation for the cause of the total pressure loss is presented. It is shown to be consistent with the results for both a quasi-one-dimensional model problem and the conically self-similar flow past the flat-plate delta wing.

Total-dose radiation effects data for semiconductor devices: 1985 supplement, volume 1

Steady-state, total-dose radiation test data are provided, in graphic format, for use by electronic designers and other personnel using semiconductor devices in a radiation environment. The data were generated by JPL for various NASA space programs. The document is in two volumes: Volume 1 provides data on diodes, bipolar transistors, field effect transistors, and miscellaneous semiconductor types, and Volume 2 provides total-dose radiation test data on integrated circuits. Volume 1 of this 1985 Supplement contains new total-dose radiation test data generated since the August 1, 1981 release date of the original Volume 1. Publication of Volume 2 of the 1985 Supplement will follow that of Volume 1 by approximately three months.

Total ionospheric electron content calibration using SERIES GPS satellite data

The current status of the Deep Space Network advanced systems research into ionospheric calibration techniques, based on Global Positioning System (GPS) data is described. A GPS-based calibration system is planned to replace the currently used Faraday rotation method by 1989. The SERIES receiver system determines the differential group delay of signals transmitted at two different carrier frequencies. This differential delay includes an ionospheric component and a GPS transmitter offset. The transmitter offsets are different for each GPS satellite. Tests were conducted to assess the effect of the offsets on the ionospheric calibration accuracy. From the obtained data, the total electron content and GPS transmitter offsets are calculated by a least squares estimation method employing a local model of total ionospheric electron content. The end product is an estimation of the total ionospheric content for an arbitrary line-of-sight direction. For the presented polynomial fitting technique, the systematic error due to mismodeling is estimated to be approximately 6 x 10 to the 16th power el/sq m, while the formal error is approximately 2 x 10 to the 16th power el/sq m. The final goal is an error of 3 x 10 to the 16th power el/sq m (approximately 0.7 ns at 2.3 GHz).

Effects of background noise on total noise annoyance

Two experiments were conducted to assess the effects of combined community noise sources on annoyance. The first experiment baseline relationships between annoyance and noise level for three community noise sources (jet aircraft flyovers, traffic and air conditioners) presented individually. Forty eight subjects evaluated the annoyance of each noise source presented at four different noise levels. Results indicated the slope of the linear relationship between annoyance and noise level for the traffic noise was significantly different from that of aircraft and of air conditioner noise, which had equal slopes. The second experiment investigated annoyance response to combined noise sources, with aircraft noise defined as the major noise source and traffic and air conditioner noise as background noise sources. Effects on annoyance of noise level differences between aircraft and background noise for three total noise levels and for both background noise sources were determined. A total of 216 subjects were required to make either total or source specific annoyance judgements, or a combination of the two, for a wide range of combined noise conditions.

NASA B737 flight test results of the total energy control system

The Total Energy Control System (TECS) is an integrated autopilot/autothrottle developed by BCAC that was test flown on NASA Langley's Transport System Research Vehicle (i.e., a highly modified Boeing B737). This systems was developed using principles of total energy in which the total kinetic and potential energy of the airplane was controlled by the throttles, and the energy distribution controled by the elevator. TECS integrates all the control functions of a conventional pitch autopilot and autothrottle into a single generalized control concept. This integration provides decoupled flightpath and maneuver control, as well as a coordinated throttle response for all maneuvers. A mode hierarchy was established to preclude exceeding airplane safety and performance limits. The flight test of TECS took place as a series of five flights over a 33-week period during September 1985 at NASA Langley. Most of the original flight test plan was completed within the first three flights with the system not exhibiting any instabilities or design problems that required any gain adjustment during flight.
