A simple test for thermomechanical evaluation of ceramic fibers

A simple bend stress relaxation (BSR) test was developed to measure the creep related properties of ceramic fibers and whiskers. The test was applied to a variety of commercial and developmental Si based fibers to demonstrate capabilities and to evaluate the relative creep resistance of the fibers at 1200 to 1400 C. The implications of these results and the advantages of the BSR test over typical tensile creep tests are discussed.

Structural design methodologies for ceramic-based material systems

One of the primary pacing items for realizing the full potential of ceramic-based structural components is the development of new design methods and protocols. The focus here is on low temperature, fast-fracture analysis of monolithic, whisker-toughened, laminated, and woven ceramic composites. A number of design models and criteria are highlighted. Public domain computer algorithms, which aid engineers in predicting the fast-fracture reliability of structural components, are mentioned. Emphasis is not placed on evaluating the models, but instead is focused on the issues relevant to the current state of the art.

Anomalous capacitance of quantum well double-barrier diodes

The S-parameters of several different quantum well double barrier diodes have been measured. A technique has been developed for measuring whisker contacted diodes with an HP 8510B automatic network analyzer. Special coaxial mounts using K-connectors were designed to enable measurements up to 20 GHz. The voltage-dependent conductance and capacitance were derived from the measured reflection coefficient of each device. The C/V characteristics were observed to exhibit an anomalous increase at voltages corresponding to the negative differential resistance region (NDR). These are the first reported S-parameter measurements in the negative differential resistance region of quantum well double barrier diodes. A theory is presented that explains, in part, the observed results.

Analysis of precracking parameters and fracture toughness for ceramic single-edge-precracked-beam specimens

The single-edge-precracked-beam (SEPB) method involves creation of a straight-through crack from an indentation crack. The straight-through crack is developed by applying a controlled bending load to a specimen via a precracking fixture. The fixture induces the following sequence: (1) stable growth of the indentation crack; (2) pop-in; and finally, (3) arrest-thereby forming a straight-through precrack. The effects of indentation load on precracking load as well as precrack size were studied for experimental variables such as specimen width, fixture span, and material. Finite element analysis was used to obtain the stress distribution and stress intensity factor, thus providing a quantitative prediction of the precracking load and precrack size for silicon nitride, alumina, silicon cabide, and two SiC whisker-reinforced silicon nitrides. Fracture toughness values obtained from the SEPB method were compared with those obtained from other methods.

Production of Ultrafine, High-purity Ceramic Powders Using the US Bureau of Mines Developed Turbomill

Turbomilling, an innovative grinding technology developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the early 1960's for delaminating filler-grade kaolinitic clays, has been expanded into the areas of particle size reduction, material mixing, and process reaction kinetics. The turbomill, originally called an attrition grinder, has been used for particle size reduction of many minerals, including natural and synthetic mica, pyrophyllite, talc, and marble. In recent years, an all-polymer version of the turbomill has been used to produce ultrafine, high-purity, advanced ceramic powders such as SiC, Si3N4, TiB2, and ZrO2. In addition to particle size reduction, the turbomill has been used to produce intimate mixtures of high surface area powders and whiskers. Raw materials, TiN, AlN, and Al2O3, used to produce a titanium nitride/aluminum oxynitride (TiN/AlON) composite, were mixed in the turbomill, resulting in strength increases over samples prepared by dry ball milling. Using the turbomill as a leach vessel, it was found that 90.4 pct of the copper was extracted from the chalcopyrite during a 4-hour leach test in ferric sulfate versus conventional processing which involves either roasting of the ore for Cu recovery or leaching of the ore for several days.

Varactor diodes for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths

Whisker-contacted GaAs Schottky barrier varactor diodes are the most common high-frequency multiplier element in use today. They are inherently simple devices that have very high frequency response and have been used to supply local oscillator power for Schottky heterodyne receivers to frequencies approaching 700 GHz. This paper discusses the development of improved varactor diode technology for space based applications at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths.

A 200 GHz tripler using single barrier varactor

The GaAs Schottky varactor diode is the nonlinear device most commonly used for submillimeter wave harmonic generation. Output power adequate to serve as a local oscillator source for SIS tunnel junctions has been demonstrated with whisker-contacted GaAs Schottky varactor multipliers in waveguide mounts up to about 800 GHz. In this paper, we present results for a tripler to 200 GHz using a new multiplier device, the single barrier varactor (SBV). This new varactor has a potential advantages such as stronger nonlinearities or special symmetry, which make it attractive for submillimeter wave frequency multiplication. The performance of a tripler using a SBV over a output frequency range from 186 to 207 GHz has been measured in a crossed waveguide mount. The theoretical performance of the device has been calculated using large signal analysis. A comparison of theoretical and measured results and a discussion of various losses in the mount and the varactor have also been presented.

Glasses, ceramics, and composites from lunar materials

A variety of useful silicate materials can be synthesized from lunar rocks and soils. The simplest to manufacture are glasses and glass-ceramics. Glass fibers can be drawn from a variety of basaltic glasses. Glass articles formed from titania-rich basalts are capable of fine-grained internal crystallization, with resulting strength and abrasion resistance allowing their wide application in construction. Specialty glass-ceramics and fiber-reinforced composites would rely on chemical separation of magnesium silicates and aluminosilicates as well as oxides titania and alumina. Polycrystalline enstatite with induced lamellar twinning has high fracture toughness, while cordierite glass-ceramics combine excellent thermal shock resistance with high flexural strengths. If sapphire or rutile whiskers can be made, composites of even better mechanical properties are envisioned.

Improved silicon nitride for advanced heat engines

The results of a four year program to improve the strength and reliability of injection-molded silicon nitride are summarized. Statistically designed processing experiments were performed to identify and optimize critical processing parameters and compositions. Process improvements were monitored by strength testing at room and elevated temperatures, and microstructural characterization by optical, scanning electron microscopes, and scanning transmission electron microscope. Processing modifications resulted in a 20 percent strength and 72 percent Weibull slope improvement of the baseline material. Additional sintering aids screening and optimization experiments succeeded in developing a new composition (GN-10) capable of 581.2 MPa at 1399 C. A SiC whisker toughened composite using this material as a matrix achieved a room temperature toughness of 6.9 MPa m(exp .5) by the Chevron notched bar technique. Exploratory experiments were conducted on injection molding of turbocharger rotors.

Possible explanations of the large angle fluctuations of the microwave background

Possible origins of the structure in the cosmic microwave background radiation are discussed. It is pointed out that the presence of such structure is compatible with the 1990 modified steady state model proposed by Arp et al. The possibility that the fluctuations are due to dust grains in the form of iron whiskers produced comparatively locally is also discussed.

Indentation flaw formation and strength response of silicon nitride ceramics at low indentation loads

The configuration and the strength response of indentation flaws in silicon nitrides are described as a function of indentation loads primarily near the threshold level. Test materials under consideration include 30 vol percent SiC whisker-reinforced composite silicon nitride and similar monolithic silicon nitride. The results of strength testing show that, at indentation loads less than or equal to 1.96, a number of the specimens fail from the intrinsic flaws of the materials rather than from the indent sites, causing a distinct trend to reach a plateau, at a level corresponding to the as-received strength of the material. The ratio of the mirror constant to the fracture toughness for the composite and monolithic materials is found to be 1.44 and 1.51, respectively.

Frequency multipliers for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths

All-solid-state local oscillators in the terahertz frequency range are especially needed for space-borne radio astronomy and remote sensing of the atmosphere. Because solid-state oscillators cannot yet produce the necessary local oscillator power at submillimeter wavelengths, frequency multipliers are needed. So far, submillimeter-wave frequency multipliers are mainly based on a whisker-contacted Schottky diode as the nonlinear element. This paper discusses the multiplier theory and tools for analysis and design of millimeter- and submillimeter-wave multipliers. Experimental work is reviewed. The Schottky diode model at submillimeter frequencies, use of Schottky multiplier chains versus direct higher-order multipliers, and the effect of cooling on Schottky diode multipliers are discussed. Alternative diodes such as the high electron mobility varactor, the barrier-intrinsic n(+) diode, the barrier-n-n(+) diode, the quantum well diode, and the single barrier varactor are discussed, with attention also given to their potential as submillimeter frequency multipliers.

Combustion synthesis of advanced composite materials

Self-propagating high temperature (combustion) synthesis (SHS), has been investigated as a means of producing both dense and expanded (foamed) ceramic and ceramic-metal composites, ceramic powders and whiskers. Several model exothermic combustion synthesis reactions were used to establish the importance of certain reaction parameters, e.g., stoichiometry, green density, combustion mode, particle size, etc. on the control of the synthesis reaction, product morphology and properties. The use of an in situ liquid infiltration technique and the effect of varying the reactants and their stoichiometry to provide a range of reactant and product species i.e., solids, liquids and gases, with varying physical properties e.g., volatility and thermal conductivity, on the microstructure and morphology of synthesized composite materials is discussed. Conducting the combustion synthesis reaction in a reactive gas environment to take advantage of the synergistic effects of combustion synthesis and vapor phase transport is also examined.

Nonlinear low frequency (LF) waves - Comets and foreshock phenomena

A review is conducted of LF wave nonlinear properties at comets and in the earth's foreshock, engaging such compelling questions as why there are no cometary cyclotron waves, the physical mechanism responsible for 'dispersive whiskers', and the character of a general description of linear waves. Attention is given to the nonlinear properties of LF waves, whose development is illustrated by examples of waves and their features at different distances from the comet, as well as by computer simulation results. Also discussed is a curious wave mode detected from Comet Giacobini-Zinner, both at and upstream of the bow shock/wave.

Micrometeorite dynamic pyrometamorphism: Nonstoichiometric clinoenstatite (CLEN)

Polymorphs of enstatite are common phases in many meteorites. They contain clues on their formation and the thermal evolution of their host rock which includes shock metamorphism. Rare, micron-sized, CLEN whiskers and thin platelets in chondritic porous micrometeorites were interpreted as solar nebula condensates that remained unaffected during atmospheric entry flash-heating. This CLEN formed by protoenstatite (PEN) inversion whereby the surface energy of the micron-sized PEN crystals aided the OREN-CLEN transformation or by metastable growth. Ca-poor, Mg,Fe-pyroxene with unequilibrated, intraparticle, Mg/(Mg+Fe) distributions occur in most chondritic micrometeorites. These distributions are a parent body signature that survived dynamic pyrometamorphism because the duration of the thermal spike during atmospheric entry is too short but this conclusion does not consider the ultrafine grain size of micrometeorites. The maximum temperature and duration of the heating event will depend on the kinetic energy and entry angle of the incoming micrometeorite. But lacking detailed petrological data for an individual particle, its thermal profile during atmospheric entry can not be deduced from its mass alone as a function of entry angle. In order to constrain dynamic pyrometamorphism in unmelted micrometeorites, I determined the petrological composition and silicate mineralogy in non-chondritic micrometeorites L2005T13, L2005E40, and L2006A28.
