We investigated the natural resonance properties and damping characteristics of rat macrovibrissae (whiskers). Isolated whiskers rigidly fixed at the base showed first-mode resonance peaks between 27 and 260 Hz, principally depending on whisker length. These experimentally measured resonant frequencies were matched using a theoretical model of the whisker as a conical cantilever beam, with Young's modulus as the only free parameter. The best estimate for Young's modulus was approximately 3-4 GPa. Results of both vibration and impulse experiments showed that the whiskers are strongly damped, with damping ratios between 0.11 and 0.17. In the behaving animal, whiskers that deflected past an object were observed to resonate but were damped significantly more than isolated whiskers. The time course of damping varied depending on the individual whisker and the phase of the whisking cycle, which suggests that the rat may modulate biomechanical parameters that affect damping. No resonances were observed for whiskers that did not contact the object or during free whisking in air. Finally, whiskers on the same side of the face were sometimes observed to move in opposite directions over the full duration of a whisk. We discuss the potential roles of resonance during natural exploratory behavior and specifically suggest that resonant oscillations may be important in the rat's tactile detection of object boundaries.
The evolutionary divergence of cnidarian and bilaterian lineages from their remote metazoan ancestor occurred at an unknown depth in time before the Cambrian, since crown group representatives of each are found in Lower Cambrian fossil assemblages. We report here a variety of putative embryonic, larval, and adult microfossils deriving from Precambrian phosphorite deposits of Southwest China, which may predate the Cambrian radiation by 25-45 million years. These are most probably of cnidarian affinity. Large numbers of fossilized early planula-like larvae were observed under the microscope in sections. Though several forms are represented, the majority display remarkable conformity, which is inconsistent with the alternative that they are artifactual mineral inclusions. Some of these fossils are preserved in such high resolution that individual cells can be discerned. We confirm in detail an earlier report of the presence in the same deposits of tabulates, an extinct crown group anthozoan form. Other sections reveal structures that most closely resemble sections of basal modern corals. A large number of fossils similar to modern hydrozoan gastrulae were also observed. These again displayed great morphological consistency. Though only a single example is available, a microscopic animal remarkably similar to a modern adult hydrozoan is also presented. Taken together, the new observations reported in this paper indicate the existence of a diverse and already differentiated cnidarian fauna, long before the Cambrian evolutionary event. It follows that at least stem group bilaterians must also have been present at this time.
Patterns of longevity and rate of appearance of taxa in the fossil record indicate a different evolutionary dynamic between land plants and marine invertebrates. Among marine invertebrates, rates of taxonomic turnover declined through the Phanerozoic, with increasingly extinction-resistant, long-lived, clades coming to dominate. Among terrestrial vascular plants, rates of turnover increased through the Phanerozoic, with short-lived, extinction-prone clades coming to dominate from the Devonian to the present. Terrestrial vertebrates appear to approximate the marine invertebrate pattern more closely than the plant record. We identify two features which individually or jointly may have influenced this distinction. First, land plants continuously invaded stressful environments during their evolution, while marine invertebrates and terrestrial vertebrates did not. Second, the relative structural simplicity and indeterminate mode of plant growth vs. the relative structural complexity and determinate mode of animal growth may have influenced the timing of major clade origin in the two groups.

Work during the initial six months of this program has proceeded along three lines: (1) technical development of blood flowmeter instrumentation: (2) surgical considerations related to special problems of chronic implantation of flowmeter probes: (3) study of the relationship between levels of blood flow and organ activity. Principal engineering effort has been focused on the fundamental phenomena operative in the flowmeter probe and on probe design. Two probes have been constructed and a third is nearing completion. A previously unrecognized source of zero drift has been discovered and corrected. has been designed, assembled, tested and successfully employed in work on the several probes. A significant innovation which has been introduced is the use of a transformer coupled input for suppression of unwanted common mode signals. New low noise transistor amplifiers with characteristics suitable for space vehicle packaging are being developed. Linearity of the present apparatus has been found to extend at least into the near turbulent flow region. Attention has been directed to the two vascular beds of physiologic interest that present particular problems with regard to chronic implantation of flowmeter probes, the myocardium and the liver. Surgical techniques have been perfected that will permit myocardial and liver blood flow measurement. Two groups of animals have successfully undergone surgery and await the implantation of probes. Studies of the relationship between organ blood flow and levels of physiologic activity have been initiated. The first organ system studied was the heart, For the first time autoregulatory mechanisms have been demonstrated within the myocardial vascular bed which rapidly and precisely maintain coronary blood flow at a level i n keeping with the magnitude of cardiac work, Following a summary statement of the status of the program, the work performed is described, A financial review of expenditures incurred and a proposal for future funding are appended,
