This paper presents results that take a critical step toward proving 10 ps timing resolution’s feasibility for particle identification in the TOPSiDE detector concept for the Electron-Ion Collider. Measurements of LGADs with a thickness of 35 μm and 50 μm are evaluated with a 120 GeV proton beam. The performance of the gain and timing response is assessed, including the dependence on the reverse bias voltage and operating temperature. The best timing resolution of UFSDs in a test beam to date is achieved using three combined planes of 35 μm thick LGADs at -30°C with a precision of 14.3 ± 1.5 ps.

Neutrons, gamma’s, and fission fragments are among the prompt fission observables. Their precision measurements are fundamental to advance our understanding of fission and any application of fission. For our programmatic need, the χ matrix, which defines as the outgoing neutron spectrum as a function of incoming neutron energy, is sparsely populated and poorly measured for 233,235,238 U and 239,240 Pu. To improve the quality of those χ matrices, a joint LANLLLNL project was undertaken to measure their prompt fission neutron spectra at the LANSCE/WNR facility using neutron detector arrays and a charged-particle detector for the fission-fragment detection. A typical setup is shown in Fig. 1, where one of neutron detector array with a charged-particle detector is given.

A LANL-LLNL joint program has been developed successfully to measure PFNS and established the most precisely determined $\chi$ matrices for 235,238 U and 239 Pu. It has been extended to 240 Pu now and possibly to 233 U in the future. An alternative method was developed to fabricate 240 Pu and a total of 12 targets were made with a total mass of 17.9 mg. The PFNS measurement for 240 Pu will begin in June, 2022 when the new beam cycle starts and the data analysis follows immediately afterward.

Scanning electron microscopy applications in study of thermal runaway in multi-emitter power transistors
Solid state devices and characterization, and optimum imbedding networks for realizing best performance were investigated along with a barrier injection transit time diode. These diodes were investigated for possible application as microwave amplifiers and oscillators. Measurements were made of diode noise figures in the frequency ranges of 4 - 6 GHz. Initial results indicate that a noise figure of 6 - 8 db may be possible. Optimum device structure and fabrication techniques necessary for low noise performance were investigated. Previously published documents on electrodynamics are included.
