Probing Axial Symmetry Breaking in the Galaxy with Gaia Data Release 2

We study a set of solar neighborhood ($d < 3$ kpc) stars from Gaia Data Release 2 to determine azimuthal star count differences, i.e., left and right of the line from the Galactic center through the sun - and compare these differences north and south. In this companion paper to Gardner et al. (2020), we delineate our procedures to remove false asymmetries from sampling effects, incompleteness, and/or interloper populations, as this is crucial to tests of axisymmetry. Particularly, we have taken care to make appropriate selections of magnitude, color, in-plane Galactocentric radius and Galactic $|b|$ and $|z|$. We find that requiring parallax determinations of high precision induces sampling biases, so that we eschew such requirements and exclude, e.g., regions around the lines of sight to the Magellanic clouds, along with their mirror-image lines of sight, to ensure well-matched data sets. After making conservative cuts, we demonstrate the existence of azimuthal asymmetries, and find differences in those, north and south. These asymmetries give key insights into the nature and origins of the perturbations on Galactic matter, allowing us to assess the relative influence of the Magellanic Clouds (LMC & SMC), the Galactic bar, and other masses on the Galactic mass distribution, as described in Gardner et al. (2020). The asymmetry's radial dependence reveals variations that we attribute to the Galactic bar, and it changes sign at a radius of $(0.95 \pm 0.03) R_0$, with $R_0$ the Sun-Galactic-Center (GC) distance, to give us the first direct assessment of the outer Lindblad resonant radius.

System and method for computed axial lithography (CAL) for 3D additive manufacturing

A method of forming a three dimensional (3D) object is disclosed. The method may involve providing a volume of photo-curable resin contained within an optically transparent resin container, and simultaneously directing optical projections from an optical subsystem at a plurality of angles θ through the volume of photo-curable resin. The optical beams are directed about a z axis extending through the volume of photo-curable resin. Each of the projections is provided with a calculated 2D spatial intensity function which creates a 3D intensity map. The projections act over a fixed temporal exposure period, during which the net exposure dose is sufficient to cure select portions of the volume of photo-curable resin, and to leave other portions uncured, to form a desired 3D part.

Segmented annular combustion system with axial fuel staging

A segmented annular combustion system includes an alternating arrangement of fuel nozzles and integrated combustor nozzles. The fuel nozzles deliver fuel to the primary combustion zones. The integrated combustor nozzles include an inner liner segment, an outer liner segment, and a fuel injection panel extending between the liner segments. The fuel injection panel includes injection outlets on one or both side walls to deliver a combustible mixture to the secondary combustion zones. Each fuel injection panel, which provides a boundary between adjacent primary and secondary combustion zones, includes an aft end that defines a turbine nozzle. The segmented annular combustion system is part of a gas turbine.

Three-dimensional co-axial linear photonic switch

Techniques, systems, and devices are disclosed that relate to coaxial photoconductive switch modules. The coaxial photoconductive switch may include an outer conductor, an inner conductor, and a photoconductive material positioned between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. The inner conductor, the outer conductor, and the photoconductive material have a predetermined height. A bias voltage may be applied between the inner conductor and the outer conductor. When light of a predetermined wavelength and a predetermined intensity is incident on the photoconductive material, the photoconductive material may break down allowing a current to flow through the photoconductive material between the inner conductor and the outer conductor.

System and method for computed axial lithography (CAL) for 3D additive manufacturing

In one aspect the present disclosure relates to a system for forming a three dimensional (3D) object from a volume of photo-responsive material contained within a material container. A plurality of optical projection subsystems are adapted to be arranged circumferentially around a material container containing the volume of photo-responsive material, and are controlled by a controller. The optical projection subsystems direct optical projections at a plurality of angles θ through the volume of photo-responsive material. The optical projections are further directed about a z axis extending through the volume of photo-responsive material. The plurality of optical subsystems are further controlled by the controller to provide each of the optical projections with a calculated three-dimensional intensity distribution acting over a fixed temporal exposure period, which is sufficient to at least one of cure or remove selected portions of the volume of photo-responsive material, and leave other portions unmodified, to form a desired 3D part.

Nuclear reactor core support system providing radial and axial support

A nuclear reactor core mechanical support bracket is disclosed. The support bracket includes a housing, a spring disposed internally within the housing, a shaft slidingly disposed within the housing, a shaft travel pin, and a flange. The shaft is configured to engage the spring to compress and decompress the spring as the shaft travels in and out of the housing. The shaft travel pin controls the travel of the shaft. The flange is configured to mount the nuclear reactor core mechanical support bracket to a canister of a nuclear reactor. The shaft includes an inset configured to interface with a nuclear reactor core component.

Heat pipe with axial wick

A heat pipe has an evaporator portion, a condenser portion, and at least one flexible portion that is sealingly coupled between the evaporator portion and the condenser portion. The flexible portion has a flexible tube and a flexible separator plate held in place within the flexible tube so as to divide the flexible tube into a gas-phase passage and a liquid-phase artery. The separator plate and flexible tube are configured such that the flexible portion is flexible in a plane that is perpendicular to the separator plate.
