Afterglow Polarization from Off-axis Gamma-Ray Burst Jets

As we further our studies on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), via both theoretical models and observational tools, more and more options begin to open for exploration of its physical properties. As GRBs are transient events primarily dominated by synchrotron radiation, it is expected that the synchrotron photons emitted by GRBs should present some degree of polarization throughout the evolution of the burst. Whereas observing this polarization can still be challenging due to the constraints on observational tools, especially for short GRBs, it is paramount that the groundwork is laid for the day we have abundant data. In this work, we present a polarization model linked with an off-axis spreading top-hat jet synchrotron scenario in a stratified environment with a density profile n(r) ∝ r ⁻k . We present this model's expected temporal polarization evolution for a realistic set of afterglow parameters constrained within the values observed in the GRB literature for four degrees of stratification k = 0, 1, 1.5, and 2 and two magnetic field configurations with high extreme anisotropy. We apply this model and predict polarization from a set of GRBs exhibiting off-axis afterglow emission. In particular, for GRB 170817A, we use the available polarimetric upper limits to rule out the possibility of an extremely anisotropic configuration for the magnetic field.

A LENS on DUNE-PRISM: Characterizing a Neutrino Beam with Off-Axis Measurements

Upcoming precision long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments will be severely limited by the large systematic uncertainties associated with neutrino flux predictions and neutrino--nucleus cross sections. A promising remedy is the PRISM (Precision Reaction Independent Spectrum Measurement) technique, whereby the near detector measures the neutrino spectrum at different angles with respect to the beam axis. These measurements are then linearly combined into a prediction of the oscillated neutrino flux at the far detector. This prediction is data-driven, but still dependent on some theoretical knowledge about the neutrino flux. In this paper, we study to what extent off-axis measurements themselves can be used to directly constrain neutrino flux models. In particular, we use them to extract separately the fluxes and spectra of different meson species in the beam. We call this measurement LENS (Lateral Extraction of Neutrino Spectra). Second, we demonstrate how the thus improved flux model helps to further constrain the far detector flux prediction, thereby ultimately improving oscillation measurements.

SAFE - Six axis frequency evaluation of a motion simulator.

SAFE is a digital computer program used to check the response of an aircraft motion simulator. SAFE drives each axis of the simulator near its acceleration, velocity and position limits, recording the simulator motions for comparison with nominal responses. SAFE also drives up to six axes at once to measure the frequency response and noise levels of each axis. Together these two measurements provide a sensitive check of the entire motion system, yet they can be completed in less than ten minutes.

Three-axis attitude control for solar-powered electric propulsion spacecraft

Spacecraft utilizing solar electric propulsion (SEP) for certain long-term interplanetary missions will depend on large, flexible solar arrays. The resulting spacecraft configurations present some complex flight control problems. Questions regarding a general design approach are discussed along with options for three-axis control forces, tradeoffs for three-axis control forces, controllers for SEP attitude control, sensors for SEP attitude control, aspects of nonrigid vehicle interaction with attitude control, thrust vector control SEP dynamics, and mass expulsion control SEP dynamics. It is found that the state-of-the-art of control system design is mature enough to support an SEP project.

Ten deg off-axis tensile test for intralaminar shear characterization of fiber composites

A combined theoretical and experimental investigation was conducted to assess the suitability of the 10 deg off-axis tensile test specimen for the intralaminar shear characterization of unidirectional composites. Composite mechanics, a combined-stress failure criterion, and a finite element analysis were used to determine theoretically the stress-strain variation across the specimen width and the relative stress and strain magnitudes at the 10 deg plane. Strain gages were used to measure the strain variation across the specimen width at specimen midlength and near the end tabs. Specimens from Mod-I/epoxy, T-300/epoxy, and S-glass/epoxy were used in the experimental program. It was found that the 10 deg off-axis tensile test specimen is suitable for intralaminar shear characterization and it is recommended that it should be considered as a possible standard test specimen for such a characterization.

Lunar electromagnetic scattering. III - Propagation at arbitrary angles to the cavity axis

An analytic theory is developed for both the steady state and the time-dependent electric and magnetic fields inside the moon and its downstream cavity for interplanetary electromagnetic field fluctuations incident at arbitrary angles to the cavity axis. The moon model has an electrical conductivity, electrical permittivity, and magnetic permeability which vary arbitrarily with radius. The cavity downstream of the moon in the solar wind is assumed to be an infinitely long nonconducting cylinder. If the interplanetary field fluctuations propagate parallel to the cavity, the far cavity field is a single cylindrical transverse electric mode propagating downstream with the same frequency, wavelength, and phase velocity as the interplanetary field. The far cavity field is the result of a forced surface wave on the cylindrical boundary of the void. When the interplanetary fluctuations are incident at an arbitrary angle to the cavity axis, the far cavity field is a superposition of an infinite number of cylindrical TE and TM modes.

A Z-axis recumbent rotating device for use in parabolic flight

A prototype apparatus for exposing persons to rotation about their Z-axis in parabolic flight is described. Although it resembles earth-horizontal axis devices, added features are its strength and portability, and the fiber glass 'couch' with adjustable elements providing support and restraint. Even under ground-based conditions, this device provides unique opportunities for investigations involving not only canalicular and macular mechanoreceptors, but also touch, pressure, and kinesthetic receptor systems.

On the maximum off-axis gain of symmetrical pencil-beam antennas

For a general class of symmetrical pencil-beam antennas, the gain at a given off-axis angle can be maximized by choosing the proper antenna size. The maximum gain at the given angle relative to the on-axis gain is independent of the given angle and dependent only on the main-beam pattern. It is computed here for four commonly used gain functions. Its value, in all cases, is close to 4 dB. This result is important in the definition of service areas for communication and broadcast satellites.

A charging model for three-axis stabilized spacecraft

A charging model was developed for geosynchronous, three-axis stabilized spacecraft when under the influence of a geomagnetic substorm. The differential charging potentials between the thermally coated or blanketed outer surfaces and metallic structure of a spacecraft were determined when the spacecraft was immersed in a dense plasma cloud of energetic particles. The spacecraft-to-environment interaction was determined by representing the charged particle environment by equivalent current source forcing functions and by representing the spacecraft by its electrically equivalent circuit with respect to the plasma charging phenomenon. The charging model included a sun/earth/spacecraft orbit model that simulated the sum illumination conditions of the spacecraft outer surfaces throughout the orbital flight on a diurnal as well as a seasonal basis. Transient and steady-state numerical results for a three-axis stabilized spacecraft are presented.

The effects of eccentricities on the fracture of off-axis fiber composites

Finite element analyses were performed to investigate theoretically the effects of in-plane and out-of-plane eccentricities, bending or twisting, and thickness nonuniformity on the axial stress and strain variations across the width of off-axis specimens. The results are compared with measured data and are also used to assess the effects of these eccentricities on the fracture stress of off-axis fiber composites. Guidelines for detecting and minimizing the presence of eccentricities are described.

Characterization of the non axial thrust generated by large solid propellant rocket motors in three axis stabilized ascent

Nonaxial thrusts produced by solid rocket motors during three-axis stabilized attitude control have been determined from ascent experience on twenty three Burner II, Burner IIA and Block 5D-1 upper stage vehicles. A data base representing four different rocket motor designs (three spherical and one extended spherical) totaling twenty five three-axis stabilized firings is generated. Solid rocket motor time-varying resultant and lateral side force vector magnitudes, directions and total impulses, and roll torque couple magnitudes, directions, and total impulses are tabulated in the appendix. Population means and three sigma deviations are plotted. Existing applicable ground test side force and roll torque magnitudes and total impulses are evaluated and compared to the above experience data base. Within the spherical motor population, the selected AEDC ground test data consistently underestimated experienced motor side forces, roll torques and total impulses. Within the extended spherical motor population, the selected AEDC test data predicted experienced motor side forces, roll torques, and total impulses, with surprising accuracy considering the very small size of the test and experience populations.

Off-axis impact of unidirectional composites with cracks: Dynamic stress intensification

The dynamic response of unidirectional composites under off axis (angle loading) impact is analyzed by assuming that the composite contains an initial flaw in the matrix material. The analytical method utilizes Fourier transform for the space variable and Laplace transform for the time variable. The off axis impact is separated into two parts, one being symmetric and the other skew-symmetric with reference to the crack plane. Transient boundary conditions of normal and shear tractions are applied to a crack embedded in the matrix of the unidirectional composite. The two boundary conditions are solved independently and the results superimposed. Mathematically, these conditions reduce the problem to a system of dual integral equations which are solved in the Laplace transform plane for the transformation of the dynamic stress intensity factor. The time inversion is carried out numerically for various combinations of the material properties of the composite and the results are displayed graphically.
